LED lights - bulb sizes

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me a list of the bulb type (and length if it's a festoon) for the lights on MKI Superb (with a sunroof).

What I know / think is correct:

Front interior light (with sunroof) - 4x W5W (501) pointing downwards
Sun visor lights 2x 38mm festoon (1 per side)
Rear map lights (above door) - T5
Footwell lights 4x W5W pointing sidewards
Door opening light 4x W5W pointing sidewards
Glovebox 1x 29mm festoon

Boot W5W pointing sidewards
Number plate lights 2x 38mm festoon (CANBUS?)
Front side lights 2x W5W pointing outwards (CANBUS?)
Mirror puddle lights - already LED’s

Any I have missed?

Rear reading light bulb type depends on whether the car has factory alarm or not, with alarm these are twist lock bulbs and even these smd replacements are not bright enough. I put an extra LED strip under each stock lamp so that it is bright enough for my kids to read during a long trip.

For footwell and door  lights, yes you need W5Ws, but best to get the side emitters, i.e. ones that look like a PCB with a high power led soldered on the side (make sure they light up at either polarity). Much more light that way.

Glovebox is I think 32mm or a 37mm festoon, again, single side emitter is best.

I currently have only door, footwell, and front interior lights changed to LEDs, plus extra LED strips and a couple additional LEDs in the boot (main LED for boot is best side emitting W5W, again). And also LED number plate lights (festoons, not sure, 36mm?).

No need to worry about CANBUS monitoring, I think only stop lamps, dipped beams, and indicators are seriously monitored on this car, the rest never gave me problems. It is not a good idea to put LEDs in headlamps on the Superb, as the sidelights are close to high beam, and when high beam is on, vapour from LED's PCB fouls up the high beam reflector.

Mirror puddle lights on my car were LEDs from factory, so were the "comfort lighting" door handle lights. I kept stock bulbs in rear reading lights and added extra LED strips underneath. Mixture of stock and LED lighting gives least tiring light IMHO.

Yes the car has factory alarm (2006 Edition 100)

Do you know what these 'twist lock' bulbs are called?

Can't say the Škoda badge projectors are my thing TBH!

The only name I know is in the link I posted earlier, it's NEO5-WHP, but as I stated, that one is bright enough to look good, but not enough to read etc.

Cheers,

How do the rear lights come out, I have only had a quick look and although they slide front to back a little they do not want to prise out, do i need to be a bit heavier handed or is there a knack to them?

Mine pretty much fell out once the bolts were all out.  Wasn't any need for heavy handedness at all.  IIRC the top one on the outer edge of the nearside cluster is a bit tricksy to get to.

Err... just read it again and realised you might mean taking the bulb holder out of the cluster, rather than the cluster out of the car

In which case it's just a simple bit of wriggling 'em out.

Not sure where the post went that I did on Saturday  :notme:

Sorry I meant the rear lights above the rear doors, all the handbook says is to go to the dealer to get them replaced  :wall:

I have also updated the list above from the ones I have physically removed and measured.

They've got a sprung tab up one end and are hooked on t'other - use a thin screwdriver and you should be able to feel the spring give a little.  Levering them can damage the roof lining.

Hang on a sec, I might have a photo of the rear.....goes off to rummage......

Obviously it's the tab in the centre, far left on the top one and far right on the bottom one that you're looking to release.

Cheers Gaz, thats great help

I assume the wiring loom goes to the front of the car (so the spring would be facing the rear or thee car).

No, don't assume - this photo came when I was changing them on my previous Passat.  IIRC correctly the tab was frontward on the nearside one and (states the obvious) the wiring was at the back.  Don't hold me to that though!!

I just seem to remember it not being as I'd expected.
