Red octy - do they fade

Featured Replies

Red Octy VRS's do they fade? I had a red GTE once it ended-up every panel a dif colout

Mines doesn't seem to have, well apart from the spoiler which has very slightly.

Its over 4 years old, this photo was taken in June 05

IMGP1187.jpg .

My 4 year old one still hasnt either, I removed some stickers that I put on the car when new and the paint underneath was the same colour, as long as the paint is looked after its should be ok. That said I cant recall seeing an older red vauxhall that didnt have a problem with its colour.

Only the rear spoiler has faded a bit.Seems a common problem.

Red is renowned for soaking up the sun and fading.

Use a VERY good wax and I think you will get better protection.

Think it would work a bit like sunblock :)

The red on our P reg Corsa was fading (basically the car was a bit neglected ;)) but we brought it up using red T-cut and then a good polishing wax. My Mondeo is still bright red, but I've already waxed it to keep it that way! :D

my 3 year old octy RS paintwork is fine generally but would agree about the spoiler though as mine is starting to fade very slightly.

They won't fade as from factory they are a solid colour basecoat, with a clearcoat over the top. The clearcoat contains a chemical called tinnoven which acts as a uv protectant ( like suncream for cars :P ). All the older vauxhalls used the cheaper direct gloss option with no clearcoat so the pigment coat was exposed to the elements and took the weathering. :thumbdwn:

For some reason the spoilers on the octavia use the direct gloss option (BOO) so keep that part at least waxed to keep it tip top ;)

P.S these comments only apply to solid colours as metalics and pearlescent finishes have to be laquered as a matter of course.

so cured the old VW Tornado Pink Problem then!!!

My Rallye Red Octavia is now well over four years old, and I haven't noticed any signs of the colour fading.

This picture was taken when it was new(ish)

Actually looks more orangy in the second pic, but then the picture looks more washed out overall.

As I understood it the colours don't usually fade. The paint oxydises and that is why you get the white sheen or pinky colour on it. It T-Cuts back to a decent red with a bit of elbow grease. Those pics of the VRS's lined up looks wicked by the way.

I thought the fade was due to the paiint losoing it's heavy oil. T-Cutting will brin gthe colour back but it will go pink again as all you're doing is removing a layer.

Best way is to use a paint restorer which replace the heavy oils in the paint. Swissol Quick Finish is one...I think..can't rightly remember...but I've used it on my 13 year old rec Celica and it works very well.
