Top Gear Mag hits the nail on the head in one sentence

Featured Replies

"A Golf with a faint Czech accent. Eminently worthy, utterly classless and just a tiny bit boring. Also the correct answer to most 'should I buy this?' motoring questions."

Pretty much bang on in one concise sentence!

(No. 8 in this years JD Power review)

Those of us with the 4x4 B-road devouring addition, vRS power and bling or Elegance/L&K luxury would probably refute the 'tiny bit boring' tag, but really we're kidding ourselves on in the grand scheme of exciting car stakes.........

I would say spot-on for the Elegance although to be honest probably "a bit boring" rather than "a tiny bit boring"

Indeed an excellent car but perhaps vRS TSi aside a car usually bought with the head rather than heart in mind.

I like my Elegance 2.0 estate v much and its probably all the real world car I'll ever need; the problem is its not remotely exciting (I drive it because I need to not because I want to go for a drive) and for someone who is a petrolhead and yearning again for something "fun" it will be the one and only thing that does for it in the end.

.....probably didnt help that a mate of mine recently bought a Mk7 GTi and I got a chance yesterday to have a good look at it (sadly we'd been drinking so no opportunity to actually sample) and it confirmed my fears that a spec'd Mk7 is just that bit nicer all round than the Mk3; attention to detail more so than anything and just feels that little bit more premium. Had black Vienna leather in it and absolutely kicks the ass out of the leather(ette) upholstery used in the Octavia....just one example.

Had been thinking next time should I buy another it'd probably have to be a vRS TSi....now absolutely thinking GTI Performance Pack despite its size shortcommings.

I think some people are expecting Skoda to be some kind of amazing budget brand that really is as good as the real thing.

It can't be, otherwise they'd never sell any VW's.

What sealed it for me is that the basic Octavias (fabric seats etc) are pretty tough - my use will hammer it, bigger inside than a Golf, and had 0% pcp deal at the time.

I can't disagree too much. But then I'm the one doing 20000 miles a year, so have to go for practical with an added dash of somewhere nice to spend the time! I get the load lugger, and my wife gets the sporty little number (Ibiza FR Edition).

Nice to see, great it's getting continued positive reviews.

Whilst I love my vRS, I do tend to think it's a little overrated.

Yeah, I grant that it's fast, relatively agile & comfortable, however I think it was under specified, I would have had the Elegance, however by the time I specced it up it came in £500 more than the vRS! So that made the decision quite easy.

I had an Elegance before with a 1,8 (peach) engine, which was exceptionally comfortable and a great drive, but unfortunately the gearbox started to play up & it was 3 years old, out of warranty, due an MOT, so off it went.

With hindsight I think I'd probably go for the 150 diesel now, if later on SUK bring out the more powerful diesel or slightly derated 2.0 TSi in Elegance I'd take that instead.

I tend to agree, if they did an Octy Elegance Combi with the vRS engine, that would suit me better.

I'm in the same boat.  Although, I expect the new superb will be pretty remarkable so my Octy and I may part company then.

Is this a direct quote? It's grammatically incorrect like much of the tosh that flows from BBC.

Yet the top gear website gives it quite good reviews?

They fact that a TSI VRS is $16k kiwi ($8000 pounds) cheaper than a GTI kind of makes it not so boring with what I can do with the extra $$!!

"A Golf with a faint Czech accent." - IMO, it has a rather strong Czech accent.

"Eminently worthy" - Certainly, if you are looking for a practical and under-stated family car.

"utterly classless and just a tiny bit boring." - I wouldn't call it classless, but it certainly feels neither premium nor budget.

"Also the correct answer to most 'should I buy this?' motoring questions." - Again, depends if you are looking for a practical family car.

My own one sentence description would be "Practical, spacious and sometimes fun family runabout which no longer feels cheap, or is cheap when compared to mainstream alternatives."

I look forward every time I need to take the RS out, a really really fantastic all round drive.

Even most of the time in eco "family" mode which is still much much faster than my previous car and fast enough.

Now and again it gets switched into sport and I really love the extra power, steering and noise.

For me there are only 2 modes, eco and sport. Normal... who wants to be normal.

With regards to the Golf, not for me - too small. Where as the O3RS is spot on in all departments IMO.

I don't care too much what other car reviews have to say, just go on personal experience.

Golf looks brilliant with those wheels. Interior in the golf is still far superior to the octavia. Where the octavia wins is the amount of space it has to offer. I couldn't go back to a car with a smaller boot!
