  • Stupid idea that forces people to spend the journey looking at the speedo not the road.

There's probably a separate penalty for breech of an average speed section.  I always smile when being overtaken in 50mph sections (whilst on cruise at 50) and then seeing the driver brake at the came

  • Particularly since the problems on that stretch of the A9 are dangerous overtaking, and people pulling out of 1-level junctions without adequate space. Average speed scameras will do nothing for eithe

Well since there are no Motorways north of Perth so that will mean no SP50's given out.

I was in 50 limit of M62 near castleford a couple of weeks back obviously doing 50 with cruise control on about half 10 at night when this big dark blue volvo passed me going like the clappers and i mean really spanking it,

I was like WTF was that, when he got caught in some traffic ahead of me and blue lights came on then

^^ sounds pretty illegal, but then, whos gonna tell him off? Haha

Nothing illegal there. Assuming it is a genuine emergency services vehicle!

I was under the assumption they had to display blue lights before they could break the speed limit?

No blue lights on = the same speed limit as everybody else. Does it not?

Depends if they're sneaking up on someone

I would have to agree with Otaylor38, Blue lights mean on a mission, if flashed they have to explain reason for. Same for the other Emergency services,

No. The police arnt always going to want the person they're closing down on to know they are there.

Still get bikers racing on the cat fiddle. I'm not sure how. False plates? Who knows.

Numberplate on back of bike only and average speed cameras take pic of

front of vehicle only. Had my first experience of this riding my new bike home. ;) :P

The ones on cat and fiddle dont mate. Theyre purposely designed rear facing with bikes in mind.

I know of a few mates that have been done on bikes across there :(.

Sounds like theyd have some justifying to do if somebody pulled out on them of something silly.

Nope, sorry, that's another common misconception, emergency services have their exceptions for speed, traffic lights, keep left bollards etc regardless if they are displaying blues or not. There's even a instance where a police officer exceeded the speed limit in his own car while off duty to catch up to an offender so he could prosecute, that was deemed lawful and now features as a question on the sergeants exam.

When I'm responding I won't always illuminate my blues and twos, there's many reasons why I wouldn't want to alert subjects of my arrival.

Didnt know that. Cheers (:

Maybe if i chased somebody at 100 or so mph and get caught. I could say he was a bad guy n i was tryna make a citizens arrest? ;) haha. I joke, obviously.

Royal Protection & Diplomatic /VIP Escorts are quick enough at giving a Blue Light or 3 when they want a shift on,

No particular Emergency is relevant, just getting you out of the way.

Common around the Deeside area of Scotland when they are out on a bit of a hoolie or a Training Exercise.

(Maybe a fishing beat is in need of a few flies being cast.)

Hope this doesn't catch on, I'll have to avoid that road which is a shame...

(or get a tiny tiny numberplate)

I've heard of it happening. I was told once about a gentleman who called 999 (hands free) to report a driver bombing down the motorway at over a ton while weaving all over the place. It was late at night and the motorway was near empty, so he was asked if his vehicle was able and he was willing to keep up so that he could keep the other car in sight. He was then given permission to break speed limits to keep the car in view until a pursuit vehicle could reach them.

Could be an urban legend. Still a cool story.

Really? Thats awesome!

Next time im on the bike, late at night im gonna keep a keen eye out.

Id love a legal flat out run please.

Although id have to be ultra quick, cos id need to pull over to call... HAha.

Or a Velcro plate or something.

Anyway. I'll shush. I believe the guy i quoted before in this thread is a policeman.

So of course we never break the speedlimit, or ever wish to, ever. Just perfect law abiding riders really, thats us... ;) haha.

Cool story indeed, does sound like a massive steaming pile of turd though

Coppers are human beings too....

Strange but true... My sister is a old bill innit...

Yeah but they look to enforce the law.

And thats no good if your the one doing a cheeky 10mph extra haha.

Those cameras initially went up and were running about 2 years ago, but then the 'not in use' signs went up and they got taken down shortly after and disappeared for a long time. They've been put back up over the last month or two. No idea whether they are operational now, but I haven't spotted and signs to say otherwise. Worth sticking to 70+tax unless you have the spare £60 to test them ;)

Or finding your way round the country lanes - personally not an option I'd take as I know by brother uses that road and I wouldn't want to meet him coming the other way.  There'd be fibreglass everywhere.

I used to love going down Hewell Lane and the Alcester Road years ago.

There is a pretty well known video of a couple of guys who recorded (on a dashcam) a woman running over an old gent and driving off and the bloke set off after her while calling it in to the police and I don't believe he was ever prosecuted for what he did.
