Average Speed cameras

Featured Replies

There is a pretty well known video of a couple of guys who recorded (on a dashcam) a woman running over an old gent and driving off and the bloke set off after her while calling it in to the police and I don't believe he was ever prosecuted for what he did.

There's a difference to calling it in and trying to stop an offender leaving the scene and the police instructing a member of the public to pursue someone at 100mph. The latter would never happen and I believe that story is urban myth.

I can think of lots of stories where people of committed offences to stop a further crime or apprehend someone and the good citizen weren't prosecuted. Ie the chap who's house was broken into and he disturbed them, the gave chase in his audi while ringing the police, he broke speed limits and eventually rammed them off the road. Unfortunately they managed to abscond before the police arrived however I believe the victim was never charged with any offence.

  • Stupid idea that forces people to spend the journey looking at the speedo not the road.

There's probably a separate penalty for breech of an average speed section.  I always smile when being overtaken in 50mph sections (whilst on cruise at 50) and then seeing the driver brake at the came

  • Particularly since the problems on that stretch of the A9 are dangerous overtaking, and people pulling out of 1-level junctions without adequate space. Average speed scameras will do nothing for eithe

^ might make for an interesting insurance claim form though

It was in the paper that the insurance wouldn't pay out as he had intentionally damaged the car. I believe the public pressure by the press MPs and members of the public eventually made them pay out.

Being asked to follow if safe to do so, especially as it was a nearly empty motorway doesn't seem to be that far a stretch. If I made the call in I would certainly ask what they want me to do.

You could ask and I can guarantee they'd say stop. I'm speaking from experience here, I've been in unmarked vehicles with no lights or siren and despite being a fully trained police officer I have been ordered to stop following a car doing 80mph in a 60mph and rightly so.

It simply wouldn't happen, not in a month of Sundays!

OK, seems pretty clear then :)

Ah, Now that story is much more believable. Possible Manslaughter is a world away from a car going a bit fast down a clear motorway.

I'm fairly sure I've seen that video also and it didn't involve much high speed chasing, just following her till she stopped iirc.

Really? You dont have to be Schumacher to do 80 in most 60 zones.

You could do that in something half decent without even trying could you aha.

I *think* (no doubt mdon will be in a better position to comment) it's more down to the conditions of the 'chase' rather than just the speed. Traffic conditions, weather conditions, targets driving manner etc etc. Safety is priority I guess!

It needs to be,

i seem to remember the figures were showing the average of 9 Police vehicles involved in accidents every day in England back in 2009.

(well actually one of the trash papers had that figure from FOI.)

Strangely the figure in 2011 was 12 Met Police Vehicles involved in accidents every day.

So since the Met is in England,

Met plus the rest of England Accident Figures for Police Vehicles every day in 2013 might be good to find.

I suppose hard stops using a police vehicle and minor damage to Police Vehicles still count as Accidents.

It was a genune traffic car as i recongnized it from working on it a few times at work,

I would have been interested to see that speeding ticket

Still get bikers racing on the cat fiddle. I'm not sure how. False plates? Who knows.

They pass a camera, then go flat out and park up just before the next camera.

Very true and even standard response officers (beat bobbies) will train at speeds of approx 130mph on national speed limit roads in love traffic using unmarked cars without lights or sirens however when following someone (pursuit) there needs to be command and control in place and a risk assessment and means to bring it to a safe end. any RTC involving police (even if no police vehicles are damaged) the police force is investigated. Hence why only highly trained officers will pursue in suitable vehicles. There's a massive ACPO policy on it that you can search and read, it'll cure any insomnia!

They dont seem to mate. Whether they know which ones work or not i dont know.

Iv seen em parked up in a lay by 2 or so cameras later.

I just take the short cuts now. Spend more time looking at my speedo than enjoying the road, so its ruined it for me.

Christ. Healthy and safety gone mad again i guess.

Maybe they are in the see camera, slow down club and don't understand how they work..

Had a good run down from Buxton to Ashbourne this evening, starting to enjoy the Octy..

Ashbourne road is a nice one isnt it :). Just watch your speed on a few of the straights mate. Theres often police lingering around.

My old boss got caught doin 100mph across there. He considered himself lucky. He was doin 140mph a few minutes earlier hsha.

I've never seen average speed cameras apart from in roadworks, and where I have seen them it's where roadworks have recently been, and they all have signs "camera not in use" on them,.

A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge (A1 to M11) has average Speed cameras on it. No roadworks, All set at NSL (70mph). It's been like that for many years. Whenever I drive along it I always wish my car was fitted with Cruise control.

There's lots of average speed camera systems around the South East now on a permanent basis.  They are front facing so motorbikes have nothing to fear.

There was readers letter in our local paper from a guy that had been  fined for going over the 50mph average.  He was bleating  about previous news stories that the average speed cameras on the A127 Rayleigh may not be actually working since their installation.

How can some people be so gullible?

How can some people be so gullible?

Good question.

My mate got told by a cop that he doesnt think they work. So what did he do? Hopped straight on his Daytona 675r and went as fast as he could.

A letter dropped through his door 2 weeks later.

:wall:

IIRC Nottingham put SPECs down the A610 into the city centre some years ago - live or not, and having just received a NIP, I'd rather not chance it.

They did, and then were annoyed because everyone did 30mph down there.

I've heard somewhere that the red fusion speed cameras on the M1 at j19 and along the A14

-Can work averages along the whole section, not just between cameras

-can monitor both directions of traffic

-as well as working on average speed can also record excess of limit at each camera

-can follow cars even if lanes are changed

Can anyone confirm? My usual contact for such things is on holiday
