Changed my gearbox oil today.

Featured Replies

I paid nearly £50 just for the oil & that included a 10% discount for trade,id go back & ask them what gearbox oil they put in,sounds like they may have just put normal gear oil in. If thats £60 just for the labour to change it then they have robbed you,its a 15 minute job to replace it at the same time as a service on a ramp.

I believe it was £60 for oil and labour

  • Part number & price for my car is on post 4,you will need to quote your reg no. of your car at your local dealer to get the correct oil.

  • Sadly its not my personal garage, its the workshop i work in for the MOD.

  • Part number was G052171A2 & it cost me £49.31 for 3 litres from my local dealer. i took out & put in approx 2.3 litres, hope this may be of use to anybody else wanting to do this job.

Just spoken to Skoda, and I've been told the correct oil for my car is G052512A2.

£60 for oil and skoda to do it seems really good price might get mine booked in

Thats not from skoda, thats the price he got charged from the independant garage thats used the wrong oil,id imagine it will be £120 + from skoda with the correct oil to do the job.

Thanks. What is the best way forward? Without trying to sound like a wimp, I'm not the best with confrontation, so when I ring and they inevitably argue that they've used the right stuff, how can I further it?  Drove the car again this morning (from cold) and it feels like it's driving with the handbrake half on.  MPG is down, performance is slightly down and the gear changes are clunky and stiff :/

They have clearly used the wrong oil,if its that bad they may have even used normal gear oil,the only way to rectify this is for them to drain the gearbox & refil with the correct oil from skoda,it may need a flush out depending on the oil they originally used. Id take it back asap.

Thats a different part number to the one i used but mine is a pre facelift model & it was 16 months ago when i did mine so the part number could have changed, did they say how much a litre it was?

The correct oil will come to more than that so they have used normal gear oil i suspect.

I think Skoda don't know what they're talking about either...

The part# according to SkodaParts is actually G052171A2, which matches what was said here earlier...

I thought the box needed 2.5L which would work out to £50?  Sounds like they've charged a fair amount at £60 to supply and fit.  Just not at all convinced it's the right stuff as the car is aweful when cold.

It's looking like they've out DSG oil in my car.  Now I have to prove it.

Yup, if you look my reg up on Skoda or Parkers, it comes back as a TFSI DSG, despite actually being a TSI Manual.  If they used AutoDealers to get the oil is it likely they've been misinformed and put the wrong grade oil in?

I dont know much about the oil used in the DSG boxes,is it a different colour? that would help to see if thats what they have used, have you gone back to the garage yet & explained about the poor gear change & that you suspect they have used the wrong oil? Me personally,i would go to the dealer & buy the correct oil & get it changed asap.

Yup been on the phone several times and they're not budging from "he knows what he's doing - he used the correct oil".  I'm just going to give up, source new oil and change it myself.  I can't prove that they've done it wrong, but it seems more than just some daft coincidence that the car's registered as DSG (despite being a manual), the gearbox being stiff after the change and the fact that they quote the oil as 70W30 fully synth, rather than giving me a part number...

by quoting the spec number it clearly shows they have put in the wrong gear box oil as vag oil does note have a spec on the bottle just a part number. I've given up using non vag independents as they cause you more grief especially when they don't know what they are doing.

I think Skoda don't know what they're talking about either...

Here's my problem; I have a Feb 2010 1.8TSI CDAA engine, MDP gearbox. Which oil do I use - the G052-171 (expensive synthetic) or G052-512 (cheap mineral)? I thought that it was the mineral oil for the 02S type gearboxes, but want to be sure.

I know, let's check ETKA! See screenshot attached.

So if my car/gearbox build date is before 29 05 1 it is synthetic, if later it is mineral. Oh joy, that is helpful! Is it meant to read 2010? 2011? 2001? Dealer #1 says it should be the G52-217 synthetic but without any particular justification, whereas dealer #2 admits that he sees exactly the same info as me and he can't be certain either!

I think you'll find the 1 stands for 2011.

The 02S MDP gearbox was manufactured from Nov 2009 to Jun 2010 so you must need the G052171A2.  You'll need 1.9L

I would have thought the dealer could plug in your VIN and get the answer (probably asking too much)

Right, had enough. Just going to order new oil.  £60 is a lot to waste but it's that or potential damage to my gearbox.  Can the oil be changed without raising the car? I only have two axle stands is all.

I'm really struggling to find out which is the correct oil. Is this correct?

From the VW parts catalog...

G 052 171 A2: Transmission fluid >29-05-2011

G 052 512 A2: Transmission fluid 30-05-2011>

I used G 052 171 A2 for my 2006 2.0PD which has also a six speed box

You can you do it axle stands but filling it will be a bit more tricky as you may need a hose and a funnel.

If you don't fancy doing it yourself I can recommend VAG specialists -  Volksentre in Blyth  (assuming you are from the north east - from you location)

Yeah I have some hose and a funnel.  Is the fill/level plug easy to reach from the bonnet? TBH, even raised on a ramp, how would you fill it without a funnel anyway?

I used a syringe to fill mine,  don't think you will be able to see the filler plug from the top but you should be able to feed some tubing down

here is a guide which shows where the filler plug is

Do you have a link to the syringe?

This is looking to be a massive **** on without raising the car...

Think I got it from machine mart but found it quite messy due not have the height of a garage ramp. Might be easier paying someone to do instead as can't see it costing more than £40 for an hours labour.

I used a large syringe we have at work to fill mine,i did all the work from underneath but mine was level on a ramp,i must have been lucky having a dealer that seemed to know his stuff as i quoted my reg number & he said there was only two types of gear oil & one was mineral oil & one was synthetic oil & he was 99% sure i needed the synthetic oil for the 6 speed but he wanted to check & he was correct. You can fill from above with a funnel & some tube but you will need the car to be level so you dont overfill it,i measured the amount that came out just out of interest so i knew id put the same amount back in once it started to come out of the level/fill hole.

My conern is actually getting under the car to remove the undertray etc. when it's just flat on the ground.

You will have to jack the car up,put stands under then remove the undertray & drain the box, then refit the drain plug then fit the tube into the filler hole & have it up into the engine compartment then remove the stands & lower the car onto level ground & attach the funnel to the tube & fill the box until it starts to run out of the filler hole then jack the car up,put the stands under & refit the level plug & refit the undertray.....then job done.
