Changed my gearbox oil today.

Featured Replies

Mine is the 6 speed box. Ive no idea if its the same oil in the 5 speed box, sorry, best to check with you parts dept at your local dealer so you get the correct oil,im not 100% sure it the same procedure to change it on the 5 speed box so i advise you check first.

Phoned a dealer who confirmed that it's the same oil for my car, which is a 1.8 with a SIX speed gearbox, but they wanted £20 a litre so I said that sounded pricey compared to yours. THey also said it takes 2.1l.

  • Part number & price for my car is on post 4,you will need to quote your reg no. of your car at your local dealer to get the correct oil.

  • Sadly its not my personal garage, its the workshop i work in for the MOD.

  • Part number was G052171A2 & it cost me £49.31 for 3 litres from my local dealer. i took out & put in approx 2.3 litres, hope this may be of use to anybody else wanting to do this job.

Anyone know if it's the same stuff for a 1.8 as it is the VRS?

the 6 speed in the 1.8tsi BZB block is a different box to the 2.0. It's a 5sp MQ200 with an extra gear added. The vRS is an MQ250.

I believe the partno for the oil is G052171A2 but VW has approx 20 gear oil partnos / specs so you really should give your VIN to VW to be sure.

I did mine at 140,000km (90,000km) using Penrite ProGear full synth 70w-75 which didn't improve the 1-2 shift (didn't make it worse either), which makes me wonder if the factory mineral oil would have been better. On the MQ200 6 speed you only need 1.9L IIRC. Filling is a pain as it's the "tilted" gearbox.

Who fixes your air compressor Mikey ?

Its done via a contractor who has the army contract they sub contract it out,i think last time they were  called "Motivair"

When I changed mine at 50,000 miles they gave me the wrong stuff which I took out after 20 miles. They gave me the correct stuff at no extra cost.

I seem to remember the oils are both the same grade but the 5 speed one is mineral and the 6 speed one is synthetic.

They did say that the 5 speed stuff would have been OK but I put the correct stuff in anyway. I still have the other stuff in case someone could use it.

I will change it every so often I think (30,000 possibly) especially after seeing the colour of the stuff in the pics above.

One thing I just remembered, there is a code stamped on the bottom of the gearbox that let's them know which oil you need.

Thats only £11 more than i paid 16 months ago so price is probably about right.

It does sound like 5 speed is mineral and 6 is synthetic at those prices. I havent taken anything apart until I get the oil so will check oil coding on the gearbox when I start to investigate, hopefully a sdmall adjustable will get the reversing switch out. Haynes manual only talks about checking oil level, thats at 20,000 or 2 years. It then says that 5 speed cant be checked so just change it but 6 speed can be checked and topped up, I think as someone as previously said its due to the angle of the gearbox. The 5 speed uses 1.9 litres and 6 speed 2.3. Cant remember who said or where the info is but I think the airfilter box needs to be removed for access to the reversing switch.

Although, as Brad mentioned, the 6 speed in the 1.8TSI seems to be different to the 6 speed in the TSI vRS. It looks like it may take different oil and, checking against my MDP gearbox code on a CDAA engine, Skoda data confirms that it takes 1.9 litres for a drain and refill (2.1 litres capacity when dry). I've not checked which oil yet but guessing it will be the mineral that the 5 speed uses.

I'm coming up to 70K miles and thinking about doing this too. Tilted gearbox and reverse plug fill makes it a bit more hassle though! Might have to measure what comes out and refill with the same, as the 1.9 capacity quoted is only if you manage to get 90% of the old oil out. A bit of reading around suggests that may take more than just pulling the drain plug out.

I think I'm right in saying the "tilted" gearbox will not completely drain without  dropping the bottom bearing pin /seal for the selector forks the the shift should be locked during to stop any movement until it's replacememt   for info my '09 1.8Tsi  6 speed does NOT have the tilted box

Just got my oil, the part number is G070726A2, it doesnt give any spec of the oil on the label but I bought from Blade Skoda, Long Ashton, Bristol it was only £17.71 for two litres. Cheshire Cat, I think someone mentioned that earlier and put a link up explaining the procedure, post number 23, think I might look into that a bit more, with 60,000 on mine its a bit overdue and dont really want any old stuff lying in there!!!!!!

What is your gearbox code please? (Have a look at the options label in the front of the service book - there should be three digits above the main block of codes, somewhere near the engine code (e,g, my 2010 1.8TSI - gearbox is apparently MDP, engine is a CDAA)

Everything I've seen so far suggests the 1.8TSIs are all 02S type and according to the Skoda info below this is tilted, so interested to hear if you have something different.

don't have the car/handbook here today but NB that it is the 1.8tsi 6 speed 4x4  will get the info tomorrow all being well

Ah yes, 4x4 does seem to be different. Looking at the published data you should have an 02Q type instead, the same as the 2.0TSI (apparently you'll be either code KSC upto May 2009 or LHC if built later). So it'll be the higher capacity and the synthetic oil with a relatively easy change, whereas front wheel drive 1.8TSI needs the mineral oil 1.9litre fill through the reverse light switch.

Anyone can help me with that?

Text from my service book:

1Z5235 OCT.COM CR AMB

LHD 9156 CS 103KW CFHC

I guess that LHD 9156 is the name of the gearbox (6 gears)... any ideas where could I search for the right oil?

My gearbox code I think is JCR, engine code BXE. 2010 1.9TDI  5 speed gearbox.

It depends which model 1.8tsi it is.  The earlier BZB had one type & the later (gen2??) had another type.  You need to identify the gearbox first as it might be the 5+1 box (MQ200) or the MQ250.  The easiest way is to look at the shifter arm as it has MQ200/250 stamped on it

For mine you pull a selector fork bolt as well.  I measured what came out & added back the same with the hope the factory had done it right.

Allow 2 hours for the refill via the reverse switch

The part number for the 6 speed box is---   G052171A2,  Genuine oil,  If that helps anyone,, Cost is approx £20 a litre. 6 speed box takes either 2.4 or 2.5 litres..

alternatively Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE75W   it's an API--GL4  equiv to G052-171 A1/A2 or 178 A" or 512 A2   I understand    VAG oil specs are a nightmare  or bonanza for stealerships  who don't always know best,  if in doubt call Skoda UK with your bellhousing number which I guess is actually the date of manufacture  a spot punching eg;  02 03 09

I carried out a full service on my car today & also changed the gearbox oil, glad i did when you see the state of the old oil that came out(picture of old & new oil). I also changed the fuel filter & the colour of the petrol coming out of the filter was brown!. Car is a 2008 octavia vrs TFSI that has covered 54,000 miles.

Interesting, it looks like something is wrong with your gearbox.

It suppose to be a "life-time" oil but I change it every 30k km or so.

My Fabia with 225k km didn't have such a dirty oil. It looked like almost new.

My Octavia HR I had 160k and oil was almost as new.

Shifting is same or even more "horrible" because I put 75W-90 for heavy duty use.

Going to ask for my gearbox oil to be changed tomorrow.  Car has 66k on it and I gather it has never been done. Should I ask for before and after pics?

Id just make sure they put the correct gearbox oil in it,id only put genuine oil in mine,i made the mistake of using non-genuine oil in my mk1 vrs & the gearchange became notchy & it even crunched from 1st to 2nd when cold & i was assured it was the correct spec oil,i replaced it with genuine oil & the gear change was perfect & the crunching stopped.

Researching this a while ago, it became apparent that the genuine oils are very good quality and many owners preferred it to other makes, however, I use Fuch's Sintofluid 75/80 in my "made of cheese" Vauxhall gearbox in my van (M32) and it is still ok after 85,000 miles. Many of these gearboxes die due to the 6th speed gear breaking up at much less mileage. vauxhall put red power steering fluid in at the factory and call it "filled for life" !!

Yup I remember the joys of that in my VXR. Gearbox never blew up, but it was VERY whiney and had to be refurbished under warranty.
