RIP Furby

Featured Replies

Received the news yesterday that my mk1 vrs is beyond economical repair  . Thanks too some complete C U Next Tuesday driving like a total idiot..

I haven't received anything in writing as yet but was told by the insurance that the cost of the damage is £2600 so they have deemed it as beyond economical repair. the damage sustained was the os rear door all caved in and all around the fuel tank the same..

So the question is if i accept the offer for a figure for the car am i allowed to take stuff out of it? Or do i have to leave it exactly as it is as it then belongs to the insurance company?

It depends what you are talking about.

Minor stuff like seat covers they won't care about, but I expect they will if you start changing the wheels or removing engine bits.

You could always ask to buy it back as a write off in case they want a daft low figure.

depends on how much damage is I guess, no one wants to buy a cat C these days and is it really worth stripping for parts? Need to know how much is going to be given for the car to make the decision I guess

Well I had a new sound system that I want to take out that was fitted only a month ago

It it had a decent amount of mods and they want £200 it's well worth it. (for example)

If you get another VS you could swap all the stuff over.

As above deffo without a doubt worth asking about buying it back :)

Ref taking things out, once you accept a offer they will give you 24/48 hrs to remove personal belongings, not parts of the car.

If you know where its stored I would go ASAP and remove the stereo.

Lucky enough it's outside my house so I have access to the car... I would buy it back at peanuts. If not I'll be taking a step up to an octy vrs tfsi

I'd remove the stereo ASAP while you have access

What ever their first offer is... refuse it. They nearly always go for the bottom book figure first time round.

It could be worth buying it back as they often sell them back for peanuts. Broken down into parts it's probably worth more than what it would be as a whole car it's just whether you've the time/space to mess about doing the work to get maximum profit.

To be honest I haven't got the knowhow or the mechanical knowledge to start stripping the car down.i.e engine gearbox and bits like that. I won't be accepting first offer either as have been advised they always offer a low price first.

It's just a total pain that I'm the one who has to go thru all the aggro especially when it wasn't my fault

If the price to buy back is low enough you can always advertise the parts saying people can remove them thereselves.

bumpers etc if in good condition will sell easily :)

Yes that is quite true. Well the person who came to access the damage on the car commented on what good condition the car is in

Oh the irony! As rubbish as it must be, like you say, might be driving round in an Octavia instead, feel for you though mate. :/

Oh dear.

Not good.

One less super vRS on the road then?  :'(

Can't you get a quote privately from a local small bodyshop that might be more palatable to your insurance co?

Did this with Miss R's Saxo 2 years ago.

£2000 from a main franchised bodyshop against £600 for a local two man band operation

I do know a couple of people that could possibly do the work. Yes this is a super vrs that is off the road. this is/was the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

That's what I thought especially when the guy said he would emphasise the fact the car was so well looked after especially the fact it has done 144k

Get a more reasonable quote, and get back to the insurance company then I reckon.

Right had a phone call from insurance. The car is a total loss as already said.they have taken into consideration the car is in very good condition but has high mileage 144k. They have offered me 2k payout. Now do I accept the offer or do I refuse? Never had to do anything like this before so not 100% sure what I should do? Any help and guidance much appreciated

Had something similar a few years ago when a friend has this with an Octavia. The insurance offered £3k (at the time it was worth minimum 4k) so he said that was too low and they came back with £3500. After collecting classified ads etc they finally gave him a cheque for £3800. It might be worth a haggle as like other have said they will always go low ball to start.

Is it worth me saying no then? I've been told to lay it in thick and emphasise the fact the accident wasn't my fault? I said I would go away and think on the offer

Have a look about and see how much you'd have to spend to replace it. If you're looking at £3000 for another tell them that.

Whos fault the accident was is neither here nor there. You need to gather as much evidence as possible that to buy a replacement car the same will cost £X, so trawl autotrader looking for simillar age/mileage, print out the adverts. Tell insurance no and send them the evidence you have gathered.

Yup. All good advice that ^^^^

You want to basically be back where you where before all this, so you'll probably need more than they are currently offering you.

Wonder what yours would have retailed for on a forecourt, 'cus that's how much you're going to require for something virtually the same.

No joy on a small bodyshop quote?

2nd hand door in the same colour would immediately bring the repair cost down substantially if you can find one.
