  • ^^^ Now I understand, my OEM dampers are made from cheesecake and my springs in my very early production run O3 must have been made by Mattel and these bits were still lying around from the concept ca

  • Get yourself a Golf 7 shocks! I have change at the rear only the 2 shocks to a brand new ORIGINAL Golf 7 shocks. They fit perfectly. The car is more like a Citroen now. Make sure that you are buying

  • Thank you for your considered opinion. I'll just carry on enjoying the comfortable ride in my car.

Im already planning my suspension upgrade. Its not gonna be simple though, as it includes a lot of extra mods.

I'm going to name it the Skoda XF :cocktail:

How about the Jaguar Octavia? The initials might be seen as a bit dodgy...

Nah, Skoda XF for me!

Just working out how to afford my Skoda Phantom as well!

Skoda E350CDI vRS Line for me with the V6 CR255 lump under the hood!

I've had the 5Q0513049CQ shocks fitted today and they have made a real difference. The ride is noticeably smoother and a lot of the small irregularities are smoothed out, it feels like someone has taken the rear end off my car and fitted a different one! I'd recommend this to anyone who finds the normal ride too firm.

The next question is whether it's worth doing the same with front shocks?

Sounds good. Any change to the handling?

It's perhaps rolling on a fast turn a little more than it was, but not enough to concern me.

My father in law has a mid facelift E350 CDI Avantgarde 125 edition.....that has the 265ps version of that motor with I believe 457lb/ft torque.

Massive Q car....0-60 in slightly less than 6 seconds (is about 6.1-6.2 to 62) and if it didnt have ESP I think it would probably BBQ its relatively small 245/45 17" tyres in most of its 7 gears.

A fantastic car, basically a executive diesel hot-rod.

Has it reduced any of the suspension related noise as well - the persistent rumble and thumps?

I'll have to run it for a bit longer to be able to tell that. I'll get back to you.

Well done on taking the plunge and keeping us informed. This type of thing is what makes briskoda a good community [emoji3]

I'd be very interested in this too, combined with a RARB (if I can ever find one for sale on its own) it could be the answer for me.

You mean I cant do the 'I told you so' dance anymore? Ah well, that's ok because I cant dance anyway!

Anyway, glad it all worked out. Are they the shocks fitted to the 1.6 Golf?

I thought you've been dancing away since I got the wrong shocks.

They are definitely the shocks for the 1.6TDI, but I suspect it's the same shocks for all of the torsion beam models.

As tempting as it was to dance the whole time, I got a bit tired and decided it was less like dancing, and more like walking with 2 left feet :D

Indeed I believe the Golf is the only Golf based model to get Multilink from 140hp upwards (as pretty sure both the earlier 1.4 TSi 140 and 2.0 TDI 150's all got multi-link)

Having driven it for a couple of days now, I can honestly say that it has transformed the ride for me. Previously when on the motorway it never settled down and felt like it bumped over everything and anything. Now, whilst it can't be described as smooth, it feels a lot more settled and the key for me is that I no longer see it as a harsh ride. It is still firm because I presume the front shocks are as hard as the originals on the rear, but because the rear is smoother the whole car no longer jars and shudders over bumps. Around town, the difference is less noticeable, but it's still better. I'd say there is a little more lean on a fast corner, but not enough to bother me. I don't think it makes a difference to the noise coming through from the suspension, but I wasn't really expecting it to do this.

For info, the shocks I've taken off are 5Q0 512 013 FQ and you can really tell the difference between these and the Golf ones if you try to compress them by hand. The Golf's are easy to compress, the Octavia's are much more difficult as you'd expect.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone who finds the ride too harsh and if anyone is around Coventry and wants to try my car to see the difference, let me know. I will also look at the front shocks in a few weeks time when I get a bit of time. The information I've seen so far suggests the different part numbers are primarily based around the weight so I think the questions are simple, do the Golf 2.0TDI shocks fit the Octavia and are they different part numbers. I suspect getting the answers will be a bit more difficult... I don't suppose anyone has got one of each so I can get a direct comparison?

it sounds like they've miscalculated the low speed valving in the damper.

For those of you that want to go beyond genuine parts, Koni usually have very compliant low speed valving.  I'm a great fan of Koni Yellow Sports adjustables.  They give a brilliant ride over ripples & minor surface imperfections and fantastic control over the bigger bumps & woop-de-doos.

This sounds like the perfect remedy for the incessant jiggling sensation at the rear of my 103TSI Octavia wagon. Thankyou Spacenace for taking the plunge and trying it out.

I always wondered why the Mk7 Golf in the family felt so different to the Octavia.

Now....how to get these parts to Australia. We don't get any torsion beam Golfs here so I can't exactly order from the local VW dealer.

just give them the partno & they'll get it in.  They'll want a deposit & you won't be able to return to stock unless it's faulty.

They are also on eBay for $39 each plus postage ex-Germany

Just check that it's the same part number for the estate as I've got the hatchback. In the UK, I presume you'd be looking for the part number for a Golf 1.6TDI estate.

Would be good if the original shocks removed from the Octavia could be compared with new Octavia units to see if the originals were actually defective.

After all even Golfs have had similar suspension issues fixed with new OEM shocks.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've finally got round to looking at the front shocks and got a new one from a Skoda dealer for my Octavia, and one from a VW dealer for a 2.0TDI SE Golf. They're both the same part number (5Q0413023FK), but different to the ones fitted to my car (5Q0412014JQ).

I'm going to get them swapped next week and see if they make any difference to the ride. If they do I wonder if Skoda are trying to responding to the ride criticisms or whether it's just VW Group part standardisation?

Yestarday i fitted a new front shocks for my Octavia, after i found that changing the rear ones alone is not enough . Now i have a complete set of the Golf 7 suspention, and the car can be called a very smooth riding car . The two shocks are complete(spring and shocks) and they have two blue dots on it(the octavia shocks have one blue dot and one pink).

Good luck for the followers
