It's a diesel shopping trolley, I suspect only the prepubescent apprentice will be wanting to take it for a rag.

You make your frustration known to the owner, you name and shame, and you stop going. Done.   It's all about trust and if you can't trust your mechanic to treat your car with respect... Then it's ba

  • Alan, I don't quite get it, he obviously was a bit stressed, but didn't drive it like a **** did he ? Whats the problem ? I honestly think there could be far more to worry about than that by people th

I remember a story several years back of a guy collecting his impreza wrx from a main dealers after it had been in over the weekend to find someone overnight bag in the boot fill of cloths, turns on someone had been away in it over the weekend.....

It is a **** take and I'd be ****ed off but I must admit when I was in the trade if I was working on a nice car I'd find a reason to take it out. If I mot'd a scooby or a evo or a rs4 I'd do the "brake test" down the road. I'm a car enthusiast so just wanted to have a drive but a 27 mile road trip is a **** take! I never drove them to death though but some road tests I've seen I'd never lend them my car to them. Best thing to do is wait with them or mention the milage when you go in. The only mechanics not likely to take out for a spanking are the really old ones that aren't interested in cars like ours

I wasn't going to quite put it like that, but the 'older' mechanics have probably been around enough and can afford the insurance premiums to have driven much faster cars!

If I leave the car idle for 10-15minutes, the obc says an average fuel consumtion of 6-8mpg. I am researching now if VCDS can display a brief history of the speeds and distances.

I still see no need for it to idle for just a window mechanism only times IMO it should be running is in and out of workshop!

I took mine for a service at a VAG specialist In Inverness.. Dropped it off and went into Inverness then 4 hours later, I'm walking down the street, when my car came tanking it down the road right past me.. Absolutely raging, never been back, servicing it myself this time..

As far as the OP you don't even need to start the engine to test the window mechanism, let alone drive it 27 miles.. Given how particular I am about driving my car, the thought of some monkey jumping in a ragging it from cold terrifies me..

It'd be interesting to see speeds and idle times etc. I suspect the easiest way is having a camera with GPS that's hard wired into the ignition. The fact it covered 27 miles and over 48 mins makes me suspect it wasn't idling for too long though.

As for their response to me asking why it went so far... Company policy when any work is done (fair enough) but 27 miles? They seemed to be up for disputing it went that far. Conversation from that point included me asking who was lying - the bloke who test drove it or the trip computer? It then ended in me telling them they'll not be working on my car in the future. Lesson learnt.

Well 27 miles is excessive even for an extended test drive! My local does 5 miles as a standard but only if needed and a 12 when they are spotting intermittent faults etc! I know this because I've done a bit of work with them and have a drive cam fitted to the car!

They shouldn't have needed to test drive the car at all for just fixing a window! Name and shame :)

At the least, a quick run around the block. Would have to ask if replacing the window mech would involve removing the battery leads. Good practice would suggest doing so. And a test drive at the end to prove nothing else has been stuffed up. I'd say no more than 5 miles though.

Only thing  I can suggest to this is that the parts shop was that far away? still doesnt explain the ragging!

I've had a mechanic complaining how bad the torque steer was as he pulled out over a solid white line to overtake people!

It was all on the drive recorder too.

Suffered similar treatment at a local independent, even had the Techie tell me what a fast little car it was, he was very impressed.  I WAS NOT!

The mankie overall marks on the silver section of the seat cover rather p****d me off too! Obviously never heard of disposable seat covers.

Needless to say the car doesn't go there anymore.

Even on my lowly 1.2 I do most of the work myself then I know exactly what's been done and how whilst saving myself a fair chunk of money! I know for those who are even busier a Garage is the only option!

I usually do too, but, sometimes something goes wrong and work gets in the way or, I don't have a wheels free ramp or, a particular special tool and I will put it into the garage but only if I absolutely have to. I am OCD about most things pertaining to the car and prefer to get the info I need on here and do it myself.

Whereabouts are you based?

Don't worry seen it's Ayrshire!

Just food for thought if you aren't too far away but http://autodiy.wordpress.com/ this is a self service garage so you can rent ramps and specialist tools! It's in Glasgow!

My car went in to have some damage repaired the other week and when I got it back it had 35 miles more on it, when I questioned the garage owner he said that's there standard test drive when questioned why it was so long his reply was don't be so nosy....great customer service, albeit was a sole garage but still....will be intresting to see how many more miles are on the car when it comes back from a main dealer in a few weeks when it goes in for corrosion to be sorted

Thanks for the link, that place is almost 40 miles away from home sadly but, I will save it for "just in case" measures.

I have a set of ramps that belonged to my father which you can drive on to and then they will lift the car another 10" or, to the point of scrapping the back bumper off of the ground. I can usually improvise my way around most jobs using them and a couple of 2 ton bottle jacks and some axle stands now that I have a decent sized garage with lights and power sockets in it.

My old mans leon tdi cupra got "stored" in one of the car parks that is next to gatwick. Came back off holiday later, and there was a loud sound everytime the car was on full lock. Almost as if someone was hitting a large piece of metal.

Turned out to be a snapped spring, which only had a few mm left holding it together! Wonder how that happened ey!

Christ. Glad I can trust my mechanic, as it really does put your mind at ease knowing it's in safe hands.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing!

I always drop my car off with pretty much no fuel in it. Even now when I use Skoda dealerships. They won't use it if they have to put their hand in their pocket and put some petrol in!
