QD Drying Aid?

Featured Replies

I've seen people mention using QD's as a 'drying aid'.

What does this mean exactly? Whats the process and what are the advantages?

I have just been given some autoglym rapid detailer, could this be used as a 'drying aid'?

Cheers fellas!

A drying aid is when you spray QD on a wet cat prior to using your drying towel

The main advantage is that the QD will prevent any water spotting (if you live in a hard water area)

+ It makes drying easier and less grabby

Also, due to QD's being water soluble, its a quick way of applying QD to the car

AS for AGRD..I don't see why this shouldn't work like other QD's

As Chris says, AGRD is a fabulous `drying aid`. I use it every time I wash the car. Smells good too!

Regards

Mike.

Thanks for the explination Chris.

Your welcome

A quick spray of QD to every panel before drying speed up the process and reduces the chances of any water marks for me :)

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a n*b. That just really made me smile :)

Good explanation though - I wasn't familiar with this as part of the process.  Is any QD fine for this?  I picked up some Demon Shine QD a while back as the cheapest available in Helfraud's 3-4-2 with a couple of clay bars. Not keen on the pink residue it leaves so won't use it as a detailer, but it's worked well as a clay lubricant.

Likley to help as a drying aid, or best to avoid in case of bubblegum coloured smearing?

Always used this process; i have a diluted mixture of Meg's Last Touch made up in a Garden type sprayer.

Something like this below.... but they can be had much cheaper than the CYC price if you shop around

Takes literally 1 minute to walk round the car and spray the car before drying.....

Nice tip.  I have one of those for weedkiller. Better not use that one, but another should only be a few quid.

FK #425 is very good.

BTW guys - found the original link to the budget sprayer i was buying.... unfortunately out of stock for now.... £3.99

Basically using this - my Meguiars Last Touch 5L container has lasted almost 4 years with my current dilution ratio!

Mainly used as drying aid and occasional claying...

Just to add to the debate:

If you live in a soft water area, one really doesn't need a drying aid IMO

Just dry off as normal

If, however, you want to add a QD while wet, to help add some small amount of protection then fine

I prefer to add after the car is dry, that way I know the QD isn't getting diluted and wasting it

Its all personal preference. ......What works for you

Yes indeed..... thanks for the clarification on that one there... This is in my routine and it works very well.

Hard soft water will determine the necessity.... but also works well in hot summer details as well.  ;)

Main point of my last post was to illustrate that the sprayers can be obtained relatively cheaply.

I know

I bought one for £3.99 at Sainsburys....It was totally rubbish

I guess it was cheap for a reason..seems you were lucky

Shame theyre out of stock at your link...I used mine, before it started leaking, for prewash Citrus cleaner application in the winter

I aim to get another in the Autumn....but not from Sainsbury's

Not sure it was luck necessarily..... bought 2 of them, thinking they were cheap.

Still have the spare one in the garage unused after 3 years.....  :D

Hence why i sifted through for the link to the exact model i ordered!!  ;)

What dilution ration do you use?

What dilution ration do you use?

Meguiars recommend 50/50 or 1:1 dilution rate

But as Steve says, it depends what your using it for

I was thinking as a drying aid Chris.

50/50 will be all you need then

If you still get some spotting, then make it stronger

Im gonna get some of the last touch when my Sonax BSD runs out. Looks brill. What's the beading like or doesn't it bead?

50/50 is still too much as a drying aid really; you can dilute further.... dependent on the water in your area.

As we are in a soft water area, and the body work is very slick and well prepared - i am able to stretch the dilution rate

Last Touch offers some beading performance, but not in the same league as BSD.

But Last Touch does have a more all-round repertoire via dilution....

You can make up 2 or 3 bottles which are diluted differently for different uses.

ie. Drying aid sprayer, quick detailer, clay lube, etc.

I keep buying it..... but also buy Sonax BSD as the ultimate QD.

He is in London Steve...Hard water

So IMO it will be fine at that dilution.....weaker and it will not perform as well with hard water.....IMO

Mike has had this problem in a hard water area and found weak dilutions don't help much

Thank God we live in a soft water area and don't need to use a drying aid...if you dry it quickly in the summer

We're well hard in London :D

Correct Chris..... as i said above. Caveat was applied in my response.

I have used Last Touch in my detailing routine for years and its a personal favourite due to its versatility.

How are you finding your diluted BSD mixtures? Any recommendations for the me and the guys?
