Security

Well...

My first Seat Leon Cupra... had a big yellow disk-lok on it, had nothing tempting on view, the stereo panel was missing, it was parked in direct view of a CCTV camera, and it was locked...

It was stolen.....!!!

I was staying in a Tra**lodge....

two guys went round knocking on peoples doors about 3.30am, if the people inside answered then they made some excuse about being from security!! If there was no answer then they went in the room ( using a master key ) and stole whatever they could find... Unitl they came into my room and hit the jackpot.. car keys!!

My phone, trousers, wallet, all my money, a bag of clothes and a 3 month old Seat were all stolen along with other peoples phones and laptops..... When I awoke... nothing had been disturbed, no signs of forced entry.....

So with no trousers ( PC tells me that the thiefs do this to prevent them getting chased!! if they disturb the person they are stealing from... ) A pair of old track suit bottoms were the only thing I had...

Police came and took statements etc... asked TL about CCTV tape.. It was'nt hooked up to a video recorder!!!!!!!!!

SO the moral of the story... crime can happen anywhere...

and to any one.... I now take extra measures to protect my car..

cheers

Do tell !!! Does it involve lethal amounts of electricity, or burning gas? :ukliam:

Dazz,

That s a particularly disturbing story - I always worry that my car is going to be broken into in a hotel car park - it's a very vulnerable situation as thieves know that there is often rich pickings.

It sounds like you were in your room when it was opened?

When I am out of my hotel room, I always leave the TV on loud enough so that it can be heard from outside the room door - it might just avoid a break in.

John.

I was in my room ASLEEP... however Concorde could take off next to me and I still would'nt wake up!!

No dodgy measures... just more carefull where my keys are...

Hotel doors are double locked with a chair in front of it....

Was considering a tracking device but, I would'nt really want my car back after it had been thrashed and possibly damaged....

Would like to hook it up to the mains electricity, gas em ( not fatally you understand ) then have a device to call the plod... where by I would get nicked for false imprisonment or breaching the human rights or some other

crap!!!

Which is why i bought a Clifford alarm with Blackjax...

Even if they get your keys, they won't get past the first junction they slow down for, cos the car will die on them.

It needs a security code before it will work normally again. :D

I've finally managed to persuade the dealer that the two-stage lock feature exists, and he has agreed to activate it. He's not convinced, however, about the autolock. Sounds great and I really want it so

1) Is it actually available on my car? (2001 4x4 hatch)

2) Can someone give me some VAGCom codes / jargon to quote at the techs in order to point them in the right direction?

Thanks,

Si

Which is why they've started kidnapping drivers and coercing them into revealing the code. Kidnap is a far more serious offence than theft.

Of course, I think they should do to carjackers what they used to do to their ancient equivalent, the highwayman: string 'em up.

Looks like i have to start carrying the shotgun then :D

On Seeing this thread about autolock have had it activated by dealer. as stated first press unlocks drivers door only, second press all other doors, all doors lock above 7 mph and all unlock on removal of ignition key. Dealer had no problem doing it and as car was in for a warranty job did not charge for it.

My Wifes Seat Alhambra goes in for work this week , will be interested to see if they are as obliging in carrying out reprogramming.

I might consider having tints put on car windows as even if they smash window they will have one hell of a job to get through the film. Already done on Seat.

Cheers.

SkodiRS

Dealer Was Garland Motors Aldershot, as mentioned in another thread about having just lost their Skoda Franchise. Still carrying on as Skoda specialist so should be fairly obliging.

You had a lucky escape, although you have reminded me, where have I put the knife I used to keep by my bed

When I had my Scoob it had the Subaru (Sigma) Cat1 alarm/immobilisor, Tracker, Disklok and Clifford Blackjax. The Sigma alarm was a neat bit of kit as it allowed various extra functions, accessable through a keypad hidden behind a dash panel. You could have autolock which locked the doors when the ignition was on, passive arming which locked the car and activated the system if there was no movement in the car for 60 seconds and a holiday mode which let you disable all the fobs and required a PIN inputting to reactivate them in case the thieves got the keys from your house whilst away. The Blackjax was the bit which made me feel most secure though.

Have a read...CLICKY

just read the link posted above by Killy.

A woman at work had a similar thing happen to one of her neighbours

He answered the door - polite knock as anybody would expect, he opened the door to be hit in the head with a hammer !!

On floor, unconscious, bleeding freely, 2 men dashed in, slapped his wife around and took the keys to his Range Rover sport.

After a night in hospital, they were OK but shaken up

Not sure if the car was recovered.

That was somewhere in Eastwood - Notts.

just goes to show that you have to be careful nowadays even sitting at home.

Where I like there's little car crime (or little which I hear about) but I have to park in Nottingham one day a week for college.

I leave nothing visible in the car - even remove the tell-tale suction cup marks off the windscreen if I've had anything stuck onto it (thieves might think I've left a sat-nav in the car) and put a disk-lok on it

Still a day of thinking - I wonder if the car's OK ??

Never one for unnecessary violence but I especially like the quotes -

"As a footnote, a copper once told me that if ever you defend yourself in this way, make sure you do it properly and slot the guy. That way there can only be one story told. Sounded strange coming from a copper."

"Policeman once told my uncles mate after a break-in, that if it happens again to shoot them in the legs(he had a shotgun) then fire a second shot into the ceiling, say you fired a warning shot and he came at you!"

Not sure how the last one would hold up - from limited experience of shooting shotguns I'm sure that a shot to the ceiling close by would put most people off from doing anything.
