Security

Featured Replies

Has anybody had any security stories (break-ins, car theft etc). Apparently Skodas, inparticular the VRS are becoming attractive to theives. Have even heard stories of attempted car-jacking. Let me know as i am conidering upgrading security on my car anyway. Can anyone recommend any good systems?

Cheers.

Hi Phil,

As a preventative measure against car jacking, you could get the central locking reprogrammed to:

2 stage unlock - first press of remote unlocks drivers door only, second press unlocks the rest;

Autolocking - all car doors re-lock when you pull away and exceed 7?mph.

This programming can be done by the dealer using VAG prog tool or by someone who has VagCom

Thanks JayTee,

Like the sound of that. Any idea of cost?

Most dealer's will do this reprog FOC -- as it only takes a couple of minutes to do, and doesn't involve replacing any parts.

I have been considering upgrade myself -- have previously had clifford & Toad alarms - both very good unit's and both very reliable.

Hi Phil,

My dealer did the reprog free, after I told them it was an available function!

However, they forgot to do the autolock, so I am going to have to go back at some time.

John.

I'm going to ask my dealer to do it at next service, too. I miss the "two shot" unlocking system from the Mondeo, especially when normally there's only me in the car. However, if the Octy had the new VAG remote lock it woule be even better, as it has the remote boot release (again, Ford were in front with this one).

Ive been quoted

for me where i live if they want your car bad enough they will have it my dad sold his landrover 110 to a copper it was nicked they had to move a lotus elise to get to it but it still went crazy or what!

if my car was nicked then i would just take the money and pay my excess i would not want it back.

i find a chain makes a good theft deterrent though:)

The seat rental car I had in spain had both these features enabled. it took me a while to realise what was going on, I would unlock the door and get in, but none of the other passengers could till I opened the door from the inside.

The rental company do this on all cars because in the Madrid area of spain (I collected the car from Madrid airport and drove to the south coast) especially they have simillar carjack problems.

The central locking on the seat was very quiet so you could only just here it lock as you moved off, unlike the octy.

No security probs where I'm from - Can't remember the last time there was any car-crime in my village, at all!

I just say if someone wants to smash a window and grab my I.C.E, they will and little will stop them. At least I have the immobiliser to stop them actually driving away with it! Crime is something I only think about when I'm staying away. (one day left in a car-park near Chepstow would worry me more than six months parked on my drive...and it did.)

Like fabia said, if they want it, they'll have it. I'm more concerned about peple opening doors/boot and nicking stuff when I'm stationery at lights etc. It's becoming more common in London - and will no doubt start spreading.

However... I guess a push on the central locking button inside the car would do a similar job ;)

Howard,

Don't tell me you haven't noticed the little switch on the door panel !!

John.

No problems in my area; got a Disklok and the cars garaged.

That's the one I was talking about!! :D Did you think I meant the little silver button on the door?

Sorry Howard,

Misread your post - I thought you meant pressing the c.l button on the key remote!

**Must pay more attention**Must pay more att...............

By the way, "its" going in the post today.

Does that make you Emily-Elizabeth then? :D

Car jacking - when you need to raise the car to replace a wheel - no? ;) I'm not bothered about being car jacked, just someone opening a door/boot and nicking my stuff. Happened to a colleague in Spain once and he lost everything other than the clothes he was standing up in.

Reminds me of the time when I had a Pug 405 Estate; having just bought an evening paper, I was sitting in the car reading the headlines, when the nearside rear door was rapidly opened and a guy jumped in and shut the door - I asked him what he f... he thought he was doing, but seems he was expecting a mini cab and thought it was me!

However, it made be realise just how difficult it would be to deal with somone who jumps in the back of the car with malicious intent and really highlighted the downside of std central (un)locking systems.

John.

 That would scare the living daylights out of me...

I guess pug 405s have a "taxi" reputation - There's one in Okehampton anyway, blue.

Howcome you dont just open the car as usual, get inside and then lock all doors?

I am so paranoid at times, I am constantly on at the kids not to open their doors. Although we are security-conscious, I am wary as Croydon can be pretty dodgy at times.

:D I have actually had that happen a few times either to me or my Dad in his Octavia. Most of the time they've tapped windows however and then spoken to us instead of jumping in! Mind you actual car crime is high but it is isolated to poor areas. We actually accidently left our old car unlocked the night after somebody viewed it before he came to get it in in the morning we realised! The autolock feature seems good. I had that in a hire car in the States. Everytime it was moved into drive it would lock doors and they wouldn't unlock until Park was selected. With the Skoda system that locks after 7mph does unlock when you go below that speed (defeats point really) or does it stay locked until you say pull the door handle?

The Seat I drove with the anti-hijack activated at 7mph then stayed locked until you manually unlocked the doors.

Apparently it would also open in the event of the airbags going of but I didn't test that bit

I can't understand why you didn't test that bit;)
