Octavia 1.9 TDI Mk1 Alternator Removal - Help

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, hope someone can help, before Gurty (my car of 12 years) goes off to the scrapper in bits.

My Skoda 1.9 TDi has done 198,000 miles and not done too bad with a few bits like a clutch but yesterday the alternator clutch pulley gave up and dropped the auxillary belt.  No power steering, battery light on but I carried on and drove it back 25 miles.  Not sure if I should have driven it but I did and it seemed ok when I stopped it and it started again without the auxillary belt.

Anyway when I started to fit the new auxillary belt (thanks to Mr Haynes) I realised the alternator clutch pulley had gone and began trying to get the alternator out as I knew I would need to get it out to have a new clutch pully installed - or buy a new alternator.

So far I have managed to free the alternator from the mountings but have no idea how to get it out and sadly although I have been using Haynes I got a bit stumped at the bit where it says air con compressor.

I took off the bulky bit at the bottom that's connected to the air con but when I removed that there is a piece of metal between it and the alternator ... so I put that bulky bit back and started to look at a way through the top.  There is a wheel at the top which is part of the auxillary belt system and it seems if I took that off then I could riggle the alternator out.  However I don't know how to get that off either.

I have took some photos to point out what I mean by big bulky thing and wheel at the top.

Also on inspection I noticed water dripping from the crank pulley too - is this bad?

All in all I wonder if she's better scrapping now or is she worth fixing?  I have seen an alternator for £60 on ebay recon so if a new belt tensioner and alternator I figure she would be ok for a while but the drip worries me.

Any help would be great, but how on earth do you get this alternator out?  I have had a look at other posts about alternators on here but the engines all look different to mine.

Thank you in advance and apologies for not knowing the proper names of parts, I am learning everytime I fix good old Gurty.

Which engine is it? Is it the AHF?

I'm guessing it is a 110hp SLX.

Hi thank you for your reply.  I have to be honest I don't know that I think its only 90bhp.  How can I find out?  Stupid really considering I have been driving it all this time.

The engine is an AGR with a/c and an assembly bracket that puts the power steering pump at the top.

You will need to remove the PAS pump, aux belt tensioner and IIRC, the RH fan to replace the alternator.

To remove the PAS pump, you will need to remove the PAS pump pulley. You should be able to counterhold the pulley with a 9mm hex.

If you didn't mark the direction of travel for the aux belt, you will need to replace it. Some of the bolts, may be difficult to remove, so get a can of PlusGas (dismantling fluid).

Water dripping from the crank pulley is bad news, as it almost certainly means that the waterpump is leaking over the cambelt :(

Thanks for that RWBaldwin.

You are right I have had a look and found it is an AGR engine, which means the power steering pump is at the top and the Air Con Compressor at the bottom.

I will give everything you suggested a go I got to thinking after much looking that the power steering pump pulley has to come off.

The water pump leaking over the cambelt that sounds bad ... how can this be fixed and will it need a garage or is it doable on the drive.

Thank you very much for the answer - really helps.

It is possible to change a cambelt on the drive if you have the right tools and diagnostics (VCDS or similar) to set the timing. If you PM me an email address, I'll send you a pdf and you can decide.

Looks like a long job eitherway

Hey thanks for replying everyone.

I thought I would update this.  My car is back on the road with a couple of fixes and one possible temp/bodge

I decided to leave the alternator in and replace the clutch pully.  So I bough a clutch pully key and new clutch pully from ebay and popped that on - worked fine.  No new alternator needed.  I also installed a new tension pulley too, the piston had snapped off the old one some 60k miles ago or more but decided to replace it while i was down that end.

Finally the water pump.  As a temp measure I have add some (er hmm - sorry to all the mechanics) K-Seal to the header tank.  Anyway all seems to be leak free and the car runs really well again.  Oh yeh I added a new Bosch battery as the old one was more or less shot at.

So far all is well.  Thank you all once again for your help.   No to replace the master cylinder for the brakes (mot guy said it could do with doing)... but that can wait a month or so.

Nice one with changing the pulley without removing the alternator, I was under the impression that was quite difficult - given the lack of space?  How did you find it?  Sure there will be other people in the same boat as you in the future.  How much was the tool to do the removal?
