Diagnosing air con leaks

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My air con doesn't work. It hasn't worked since last summer. I thought I could get away with rolling around town with my windows down and that I wouldn't get too hot, but I was wrong.

I had it re-gassed and it was fine for about a week, but then it started to warm up again. I'm thinking that there is a leak and the coolant is escaping. How would I go about finding the leak and repairing this at home?

Thanks

Take it to an a/c specialist who can recover what's in there, vacuum it down and inject UV dye into it with the PAG oil/refrigerant. As the gas leaks out, the dye bleeds out too and shows up under UV light. There are some places you can't see, so it may also require a 'sniffer'.

You would need to have the facility to insert a dye then be able to recharge the system, after running it for a couple of days, you would then check the whole system with the aid of the a lamp compatible with the dye used, for example maybe an ultra violet lamp, this is because the liquid would probably  evaporate or get lost if the weather is wet, the dye used should be a correct one for the job and would leave a coloured stain visible with the said lamp, after that you would have to work out if its a joint or maybe a pipe or even some other part that needs attention,

Perhaps not what you wanted to read but that is what happened on my old Peugeot, it can  be an expensive problem to sort but unless you know someone in the trade then you can only shop around for the best price

Good luck with this one

Best regards to all
