Windscreen repair

Featured Replies

I've just noticed coming home that the windscreen has a huge crack in it, any idea on costs to replace it? I seem to be having a really unlucky month 3ura3ajy.jpg

Are you fully comp?

Most insurers charge between £50 - £75 to change a screen.

Certainly am, I just don't want it to affect my no claims bonus

Windscreen replacements do not effect your NCB

:whew:  That eases the mind a bit, I'll phone autoglass in the morning

check your insurance paperwork as most have a preferred repairer and may not cover the total bill if you use someone else as they put a limit on a claim if you don't use their choice

easiest way is ring insurer and check, glass repair is normally an option on the multiple menu options

I wouldn't use anyone else other than Autoglass. They'll probally accept them.

My insurance is partnered with Autoglass, I'll have to pay £75 by the looks of things

If you have Citisafe. Get them to disconnect it before removing the glass. see previous threads re Citisafe and windscreen replacement

I don't have citisafe, but thank you anyway!

Mine went about 6 weeks ago. All of a sudden as I went over a pot hole it cracked from a small chip near the middle of the screen to the bottom. The chip was very minor, almost unnoticeable and had been on the screen for around 6 months.

So you could have had a chip and same happened.

Anyway my insurance uses Autoglass, so contacted them and they handle everything and they turned up to my home and did a very professional job, took around 45mins to replace.

Our citigo windscreen went yesterday. A nice big stone hit the lower drivers side of the windscreen and we now have a foot long crack heading towards the centre top of the screen. Hoping to get it done on Monday 14th.

I will be disconnecting our Citisafe before they fit the screen. I will try and post a few pics if i get chance.

My other cars windscreen took a whack from a stone the other day, not a chip or a mark.

The new Citigo screen I had fitted not so long ago took a whack from a stone last week, again I have a chip, it's more or less in the same area of the screen.

I've never had a windscreen go ever on a car before the Citigo one cracked, luck of the draw I guess.

Finally managed to get round and book Autoglass (who the insurers say we have to use) to replace the windscreen Today, only to be told it will take eight days to get a Citysafe version of the windscreen.  :x So the problem is at what point does it become dangerous/illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen and should the insurers provide a hire car if it is not safe to drive!

Discuss?

Autoglass fitted mine. I asked if it's safe until they could fit the new one, it was a crack about 9" long from bottom to middle ish of the screen, they said it will be ok as it won't shatter.

I drove around with mine cracked for around 7 days. Guess if it got hit again the crack could have got longer but not shatter and be dangerous, just my thoughts.

Fortunately, the days of toughened glass screens are long gone and, if you had a chip, the screen could explode at any time. The laminate in the screens these days will hold for a long time, even if there is an enormous crack.

I'm not sure if it's new glass being used in new cars but I've read and heard alot of people with new cars having the screen replaced. My neighbour just had the front screen replaced on her Kia for a crack in it. No signs of a stone chip. Dealer didn't want to replace it under warranty as they stated it was caused by a chip. (even I could not see the chip).

In the end they agreed to cover under warranty but there is a back order of screens (so maybe its a common issue?).

Not saying that it is in the Citigo's case but screens seem to crack very easy lately?

The one I had replaced looked a bit thin, may be they are these days. The laminates were hefty old things in comparison it seems.

Apparently driving with a cracked windscreen could cost you a fine. If the crack/chip is bigger than allowed by an MOT. You could be fined as driving a car that is not roadworthy.

Yeah I have a cracked one similar and the insurance company said it was fine to still drive it but I haven't been as it would be a fine easily if I was caught!
