Nuisance Call Blocker

Featured Replies

Hi

I have an iPhone 4s running the older iOS6 software and am receiving numerous calls at all times of day from two numbers, those involved in claims management.

Can anyone recommend an App to use to block said calls?

Thanks in advance

android can block any number and to be honest i thought ios could too

Report them to the ICO. Every time you get the call.

I don't think you can block numbers on IOS (I looked into it at one point) as apps cant intercept the calls like they can on Android.

Call blocker is available on IO7.

Best way to deal with them on IO6 is to create a contact called 'nuisance caller' and add all your unwanted callers to this contact. Then set a silent personal ring tone for that contact :)

Lead them on a bit to get some details like office numbers or addresses make sure you get the name of who you are talking to.

Tell them you want your details to be removed from all their databases and if they call again they'll be reported to the ICO. Make a note of the date.

If they call back report them to the ICO. But keep a note of all the dates/ times they call.

Don't hang up or get too stroppy they'll just call back.

Absolutely, These guys who make these calls love it when they pi** you off and you will be the talk of the call centre. Do not rise too it.

Same here.

Why not update to iOS 7.1.1 as this will give you the ability to block callers as follows. Add the offending numbers as contacts and save. Then select Edit for each, scroll to the bottom, and select Block this Caller. My wife and I both do this with our iPhone 4Ss.

Yeah, this looks the easiest way of doing what's needed, thanks!

Register with TPS, AND report to ICO- that6's most important ,as ICO wil keep a runing tally for prosecurion purposes.

reading through this thread I was wondering why nobody had mentioned the TPS, I went from 3 or 4 calls a week to a flat 0 on my mobile. On the landline, hasnt proven so effective.

Although on the landline it used to be the same pool of numbers each time, then I changed tact ever so slightly. If I answer the phone to them greeting me from some sales company my now default response is as follows "This number is registered with the telephone preference service, by calling this number you are committing an offense with an unlimited fine, I will be noting this number from my call log and if this call is ever repeated again I will be reporting the offense to the relevant authorities and also billing you for my time". Honestly, I have no idea if there is an unlimited fine and I don't think the whole billing them thing would play out too well and until the post above didnt even know who the relevant authorities would be, but it gets rid of them pretty gosh darn quick.

6677- from my reading, the offence is breach of the Data Protection ( Telecomms ) act.( IANAL, but some of the leagal eagles on here will confirm that) Again from reading i understand it as ,that 28 days after you register with TPS, your number will appear on a "Forbidden to call " list, which cold callers are required by law to consult ,BEFORE CALLING.  Last i heard the penalty was approx £5000 and possible withdrawal of phone services. But these firms are Telecoms providers best customers, so very cynically I doubt if BT/Virgin etc would kill the golden goose. i used to use a similar script on my landline ,but also insidst that my number was deleted from their data base. You will find that some "clever" cold callers will try and tell you that TPS does not apply to mobiles. it does, but I also fill out an ICO complaint. For the text pests, there is also ICO  and a nice source of information on the pest can usually be obtained from www.whocallsme.com. When compiling an ICO complaint, I always include the who calls me data.

We periodically get calls on the landline asking to speak to the Sky account holder. There has never been a sky account at this address.  We keep telling them that the number should be deleted from their database but to no avail.  They also always block their number from showing up.  On one occasion we asked for the name of their organisation and were given a fictitious name.

I use the TPS service to great effect but the odd 'customer survey' based call that I still get I usually ask them to wait a moment them make a cup of tea and drink it before going back to the phone. Don't know how long they wait until they hang up.

One of my mates will chat away with them and then start getting personal, what's your name, do you like to meet strangers etc. they don't stay on the line for long.

I've found that an increasing number of cold calls are originating outside of the UK and therefore beyond the control of the TPS.

If we are talking landline, then the BT 6550 phone will block International calls as well as any other calls?

I bought one a year ago. Brilliant piece of kit.

Up to 10 numbers...so it says on the blurb on Amazon?

Need to block more than that, or am I missing something here?

Looks good otherwise, and reasonably priced too.

50% of these increasingly annoying calls are recorded messages now, so you can't actually speak to anyone to TELL them to remove you off their data base...unless you press button 9 or whatever.  :wall:

Actually more than that because you can block by:

1. Call type such as International/Witheld no/Private No/pay phone

AND

2 . Upto ten specific numbers.

I would not be without it now.

Some important callers withhold their number....rozzers for instance, so that could be a worry.  :notme:

Yes you are right but you can choose to block "withheld numbers", or choose not to.

I was getting loads of "International" numbers, so I block all these. Jobs a good 'un.

There is no facility to block 'slugs' though. (Sorry, couldn't resist!) :)

You don't even need to add them as a contact to block them. ;)

Cheers

That's pressure. Won't sleep tonight!!!!!

I'd be wary of pressing any key, as some sites use this a method of re routing your call via a high rate line. I'd be very surprised if high end phones don't have call blocking as even my cheapo Vodafone has blacklist inthe settings menu.

I NEVER EVER press any keys to get through after listening to their crappy sales speech, as I'm never interested in ANYTHING they've got to say.

If I want something, I'll do my own research and call THEM accordingly, and that's after checking the 'Say No to 0870' web site too.
