1.8 tsi low oil and white smoke

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have had a 1.8 tsi (2010 fl) for about six weeks. I've done around 3.5k and have just had a the low oil light come on, along with a moderate (but more than normal) amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust.

Oil was low when I bought it, so topped it up. Before making a 300mile journy oil was at about halfway point on the dip stick guage. Now it's on low (we're on holiday) and the smoke has started.

I'll obviously find some oil and top up but wonder what this is indictive of? I know there have been failures on this block reported.

Iirc skoda allow 1l/1000km usage before they will do anything. Mine uses about 1l per 2500 miles. The dipstick only shows 1l out of the 4l that are in the sump.

Most likely problem is valve stem seals going; or a bit less likely, worn rings.  Both will cause white smoke when you accelerate.

Most of the 1.8 tfsi and 2.0 tfsi suffer with high oil consumption and there is a technical bulletin about this. I work for audi and see about 1-2 a week vag say 1000km to 1 litre is normal but we carry out piston replacement and the problem is fix I think at the factory they fitted the wrong oil scrapper rings and oil is passing and then burning away!

If you have full skoda history they might offer goodwill but will need to carry out consumption tests

Hope that helps dude

Mine had pretty high oil consumption until about 19000 miles when it seem to suddenly stop .... I was checking it every 800 miles and  it was using about 2/3 of a top up can. It's now done 24000 miles and I'm still checking every 800 but it's using nothing ....

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry for not coming back sooner.

After oil consumption tests, it was indeed at the top of the 'acceptable tolerance'.  How 1 litre per 1,000 miles is considered OK is beyond me, but then I ran Fords for years so maybe I was spoilt.  That's a lot of additional expense over a 15,000 mile year.

Dealer was in the process of taking it up with Skoda UK but because of this issue and some unrelated problems I've returned the car. (We only had it a couple of months).

Thanks again.

Thank you too for the feedback.

No help to you but for a bit of balance....

2011 1.8 4x4

2l in 24000 miles, most of that in the first 15000 miles, zero consumption since last service 5000 miles ago.

On fixed annual service using 502 spec oil at progress in Northampton.

Also running revo stage 1 map.

Just joined the forum and seem to be having the same issues as you with my 1.8tfsi A3 (59 plate) with 30K on it.

did you resolve ?

Its worrying the life out of me. My exhaust tail pipes and thick in black soot and it smokes quite badly (white) with no real pattern to the smoke other than its worse when its cold.

any advice appreciated.
