What to do next

Featured Replies

After 197,000 almost completely trouble free miles my turbo finally let go last night. Car is an 07 reg vRS SE which was given a 'mild' remap by Unit18 at 60k miles and I think is making about 160ish bhp.

Question is, what do I do next? - all options and opinions gratefully received.

Over the last 12 months the car has been doing about 1000-1100 miles a week. I've owned it since new and it's always been fully serviced and looked after. I should probably be sensible and just scrap it and get something else but I would really rather keep it.

So, do I go for a new standard turbo or take a chance on a second hand one? Is there any advantage going for a higher spec turbo running the same map (I don't want to map it again as the one on there has so far proved to be very DMF, clutch and MPG friendly and I don't really want the expense)?

Thanks

If you are buying new you may as well pay for a better Garrett one rather than a straight KKK replacement.

The housing will need clocking as it'll be pointing the wrong way to fit the Golf it was intended for but other than it is reportedly stronger and more reliable than the KKK one.

Alternatively there are plenty of refurbed available as PD130 are being removed left right and centre to be replaced with the PD150 Garrett of a Golf or hybrids etc. Personally I had the turbo go on both my Fabias. One at 120k which I replaced with a 60k KKK unit and it ran fine until it was written off with a side impact. I believe the turbo was removed fitted to another car and continues on to this day.

The other car went pop at 50k (although had potentially been changed before that already) and again I fitted a seconds hand 6k KKK unit and the car has done another 25k without issues.

If you do decide to scrap let me know a price as for the few hundred quid it would cost to get it back up and running I'd buy it in a heartbeat (even with the relatively intergalactic mileage!)

Very good advice there ^

Unless the car has a lot of underlying problems in addition to turbo failiure then it's worth sorting it out and carry on using it.

Thanks for the advice. There is nothing really wrong with the rest of the car. The front end is getting towards 50% paint 50% stone chips, the bodywork has certainly seen better days (no rust though) but mechanically it's sound and this is the first time it has ever not got me home.

I'll be honest, having spend all that time and miles behind the wheel, I am rather fond of it!

It's currently with Midland VW so I'll see what they reckon it's going to cost.

Cheers

There must be something in the water as there's another thread that reads "turbo blown going to scrap"

I know some cars are going to be 11 years old now but they are holding their money ridiculously well (as displayed by the £8000 asking price that popped up on here for an SE!)

There is a large change it's not going to be as big a bill as you expect.

I bought a second hand turbo for £150 off of a member here and including all required parts, the labour to swap it all over and to do a full oil and filter change it cost me a little over £500

About double that if you want a new turbo but it's definitely not more than the car's value.

Ok I'm convinced, I'll keep it (I was never going to require much persuading) :)

If I'm looking for a replacement turbo does it specifically need to be one for an ASZ code engine? Would something like this do the job? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Passat-Audi-A4-A6-TDI-130PD-HYbrid-210bhp-717858-6-Turbo-Turbocharger-/131233905631?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e8e267bdf

Having searched on here a few people mentioned issues with the EGR mounting if using a different turbo. On mine the EGR is still there but it has been completely blanked off with a solid blanking plate and the CEL light was mapped out so I would guess that total removal should be straightforward if required.

Thanks

Think I may have answered my own question. No it won't! Mine will be integral with the manifold - is that correct?

Your SE will have the later lower emission BLT engine not an ASZ

The cast exhaust manifolds are different (I know from experience!) but if you have already had your EGR removed and mapped out it won't really matter.

Either ASZ or BLT turbos should fit but I don't think that ebay one you linked will

Possibly this one

Thanks. So, given the price of something like that in the ebay link, these from xman750 seem quite a good deal - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/290864-garrett-gt1749vc-based-hybrid-turbo-for-pd130-asz-19tdi/page-4.  And given that I won't have the egr issues they should bolt straight on.

I'll wait to hear that the engine hasn't inhaled the turbo innards before I buy anything, but that's certainly given me something to think about. Thanks for your help.

The xman ones are refurbs/rebuilds but yes they are well priced.

If you've already had your EGR removed and mapped out you won't get any EGR issues regardless of what you bolt on :D

No problem having been through turbo failures twice now I feel it's my duty to share what I know

Just sell it...

... to me. ;)

Well it is in your favourite race blue :)

Well it is in your favourite race blue :)

I'd buy it as is.

Even if the engine has sucked on the turbo. :)

High miles too, perfect for a project.

Do you not have another PD130 engine lying about the depot even if things are seriously knackered!

I'd consider a swap!

....snip ..... a little over £500

New turbo going on. Just over £1k so you were bang on with the price.

I was going to say, Midland vw quoted me about £170 to fit a supplied turbo, and they said they could get a replacement at 700 and something quid. I'd never pay that personally.

They aren't cheap. :(

Too late for a swap then. ;)
