Target fixation.

Got warned about this when training. Don't look where you're crashing, look where you won't crash.

http://www.solent-advanced-motorcyclists.co.uk/riding-tips-mainmenu-46/187-understanding-target-fixation.html

Bet this guy had some epic chicken strips on his bike too. It was dry, front wheel should have been chirping.

Still if he hadn't been riding like a cocky arse it wouldn't have been an issue.

Quite by chance I found some information on the same site, about filtering...

http://www.solent-advanced-motorcyclists.co.uk/riding-tips-mainmenu-46/157-riding-tips-filtering.html

....sounds like the chap that runs the site has his head screw on proper :) The filtering article mentions about using common sense and "The prime rule is safety, both for the rider and for other road users who may not be expecting a motorcycle to appear from between queues."

With regards to what bealine has said, the Solent guy mentions this:

"Don't forget that you should never force another vehicle to swerve or slow down - if you are seen to do so, this could count as grounds for a prosecution."

Solent guy makes a lots of sense, I think we could all learn something from his website.

.....and, whilst "filtering" is not a problem (moving from one lane into another), "lane splitting" (ie the practise of dividing a lane in two and under/overtaking a vehicle in  the same lane) is highly illegal and fraught with danger!

Just to update you on the situation, a friend has promised to contact the relevant Traffic Manager for the section of First Group that looks after the Reading Railair Link.   Most of the coaches have cameras fitted so by process of elimination he may be able to find the footage and forward it to the police, providing the coach hasn't been over-utilised so that the original film is overwritten.   If that is the case, a little "Old Bill" friendly word in the shell-like may be forthcoming!

I ride bikes and that guy is a c*ck

So, if I am doing 80 and retard splits the lane and undertakes (both of which are illegal and dangerous) that means matey is speeding too, no?

Clearly, but his speeding is naughty but yours okay?

In fact, plonkerchops was doing close on 100 mph ,

You could tell could  you??? Did you see his speedo in your nearside mirror as well???

What fantastic skills you have sir! I'd only be able to manage a guess of 'faster than me' but I haven't been to coach driver boot camp.

way too fast for this sort of "game"

But going faster than 70 is okay in a car, just so I'm clear on this... Oh and 'game'???

(which is exactly how he saw it).

How do you know how he saw it? Are you telepathic?

In fact, if my speedo is reading 80 mph, I am in fact doing 73 mph which is sort of okay.

Sort of okay???  Ummm no. You were speeding as was the biker but in your

account you were a whiter than white paragon of automotive virtue, I'm saying there was fault both sides.

However, you seem to consider the "leather clad idiots'" speeding acceptable -

I never said that. You were both in the wrong.

presumably because he doesn't have a front number plate

Like just about every UK bike made since the 50s.

and the "L" plate flapping in the breeze  (again illegal on a motorway)

Maybe it was a full licence holder riding someone elses bike, a bike mechanic doing a road test or something

similar or did you know for sure it wasn't with that remarkable coach driver green beret telepathy you have?

obscuring his number plate makes it impossible for cameras to catch the little effer!

This is a scientific marvel!!!  A 100mph bike (your assumed speed) yet a piece of thin plastic can

defy the air travelling over the bike and rider and bend upwards??? My giddy aunt, we are in the

realms of fantasy now. Was the biker also wearing a horned nazi helmet with swords poking out from the wheel

centres and fire and black smoke spewing from his exhausts whilst rushing on his way to his next rape at 100mph???

Not the most worldly professional driver are you? There are lots of rear facing cameras used on the motorways

including specs.  They must have already thought of the whole number plate on the rear of bikes only thing eh?

"Lane Splitting" is illegal, Never said it wasn't

"Filtering" on a motorway is legal in certain circumstances in slow-moving traffic (the legal definition of which is unclear, but likely to be considered by the courts at 30 mph or less).   In fact, if a motor-cyclist has an accident on a motorway whether "filtering" or "lane-splitting", not only will his poor body end up worst,

I think he probably already knows that.

but the courts are likely to consider it his fault.

And he's unlikely to care about that until he's out of hospital

For your information, there was an HGV in the nearside lane, a Railair Coach in Lane 2 and me in Lane 3.   The motorcyclist attempted to overtake the coach in Lane 2.5  and undertake me in Lane 2.5 with insufficient gap.

In your opinion and from your vantage point.

Railair Coach couldn't move left, the only way to avoid a collision was for me to go right.

So the biker deliberately risked his own life just to pass your car in the hope you would move, doesn't sound all that likely to me, there's nothing

quite like riding a bike to remind you of your own mortality.

The reason I did this was precisely because I DID check my nearside mirror, otherwise motorcyclist would have likely been "Brown Bread".

So you interrupted a suicide attempt did you? Or were you trying to use that telepathy again?

I must go to coach driver school, they teach you some really handy stuff...

Before you cast any further stones about my suitability for motorways, I am a professional Coach Driver with a full International Certificate of Professional Competence and Operator's Licence.

And as such not used to spending much time in the outside lane???

Or are you saying you are so used to being given a wide berth when in a coach and didn't like

it when your 1.2 'Rapid' failed to intimidate a biker with it's lack of on road presence and lack of rapidity???

I'm not trying to have a row with you here but your post is so full of assumptions that it removes its validity

in my eyes. And a driver of your pedigree should be all too aware of the dangers of making assumptions whilst at the wheel.

The fact I am a professional coach driver means that, although a bit shaken, I carried on my journey in a calm, unruffled manner.

No you're having a rant on here instead. But whatever works for you I guess.  We all need to vent occasionally.

But, If you were so 'in the right' why didn't you just let him plough into you?

Oh yes that's right, there was the whole you speeding thing. Why don't you join the BCF forum and go and tell them how they

should all be taken off the roads. Good luck with that by the way. They may be gentle with your hurt

feelings but I wouldn't count on it if I were you.

It still sounds to me like it surprised you and made you swerve as it went by. Did it have a noisy exhaust?

I am definitely purchasing a dash-cam now that shows both front and rear views so that, if nothing else, the antics of these jokers on two wheels can be made public.

How very public spirited of you, what a pillar of society! (It will also record all your speeding and errors so be careful what you wish for)

The dangerous way both cyclists and motorcyclists are behaving, particularly as you get close to the capital, is appalling and needs curbing!

By you? Or the law makers? The only say you have there is by using your vote, so you better check manifestos as to what policy

changes re:biking they intend to implement before putting your cross in the box. I suspect there will be zero mention in any published

election material. So you'll have to stand for election yourself if it really bothers you that much, but I bet you don't.

And to echo John, I agree the film this thread is actually about is 100% the bikers fault.  But let's not demonise all bikers, there are an

awful lot of them who are a fair bit better trained than you (or me for that matter) and we all have to share the roads. Just remember a

biker has a lot more to lose from a bad decision than a wing mirror or a scratched body panel. That is certainly foremost in my mind

before I decide to do something on a bike.  The video is an excellent example of what happens when you don't consider that first.

But to make a blanket statement like 'All bikers should be removed from the roads' is not really helping the discussion and will just

provoke replies like this.

But let's not demonise all bikers, there are an

awful lot of them who are a fair bit better trained than you

I would agree, they are an awful lot!   :D
