Tyres

Recommended Posts

Just had my first service at 18k miles and been told that my fronts have about 2mm tread left. Rears have about 3mm.

Any recommendations on replacements when they're due, stick with the same or change to another brand/type?

Car is a 63 plate Superb Estate 170

Here are my notes on the subject - thanks to othere members on this forum......

Pilot Sport 3 - Had them for about 8 months and think they are better than OEM conti sports contact 2, in terms of noise and grip. Goodyear Eagle F1 also good

Conti Premium Contact and Goodyear efficient grip both suit cars like the Superb very well. I have done a about 150k on both in various cars and while the Goodyear get me marginally higher mileage they are both great tyres that grip and handle well (apart from in snow) and are very quiet. Pesmog

On my car the Conti 2's got a bit noisier as they wear down. As far as tyre pressures are concerned, I was advised by the dealer to run at 32 lbs/sq in (2.32 bar) all round for normal loads. I found that made me less likely to damage the front wheels on potholes and also gave me slightly sharper turn in. In fact I now run at 33 lbs/ sq in (2.39 bar) for normal loads. The recommended 2.2 bar for the front which equates to 31 /32 lbs /sq in is in my opinion dangerously soft for such a low profile tyre allowing it to come down on the rims and damage them. The rear recommendation which equates to about 34/35 lbs /sq in makes an empty rear end bounce too much and is much more suitable for a loaded boot. Caspian

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on my combi, all at 35 p.s.i., and have to say, they are very quiet. jonnb

As Caspian pointed out earlier, it seems Conti 2s, according to my local independent tyre specialist, do have a reputation for increased noise with wear. So probably the Michelins when replacement is needed. Mayor of Newark

Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance tyres. The old worn Pirelli's made the car almost nosedive when I lifted off, after I changed to GYEGP it just keeps on going. I'm sure you sacrifice a bit of grip, but in my mind when you use some caution they are excellent. Same with Continental Premium  Contact 2E

I don't have a 4x4 but do have an auto 170. Front continentals lasted 10k miles and rears 18k. Replaced with Falkens all round and the fronts have done a further 19k and still have plenty of life in them. Rears are like new at 11k. Quiet and good grip and only 100 each fitted. iancjc (possibly FALKEN ze914 - £84 fitted)

Just measured mine, Goodyear F1 AS2's after ~ 15,000 miles. Fronts are ~5.3 and rears ~6. Changed over from original Continentals at about 25-26,000 miles. Good tyres and wearing well so far. Stevehg

Just replaced my Conti 3s with Michelin Pilot Sport 3's at the 75000km point.  The Contis did just a tick over 55000kms.  Car was supplied with Dunlop (juk) Sportss Max which have to be among ther world''s worst tyre. The Contis were excellent in wet and dry, quiet and good grip.  My tyre dealer couldn't really split Contis and Michellin however the latter were on a  deal which saved me a few hundred bucks.  So far so good.  Quite as a mouse but no rain lately to test the grip.

I had Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on my car, but at the last change, went for the Michelin Primacy 3, and find them even better than the Pilot Sport 3.

Without hesitation: Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance. Quiet, fuel efficient, no loss in driver feel, no sacrifice in grip, and £40 back in fuel vouchers at the moment at participating retailers/fitters.

They take a bit of getting used to as they roll on a lot further than normal tyres - so you ease off on the accelerator earlier than other tyres.

I am genuinely seeing big fuel efficiency gains on my commute, which is mostly made up of country B roads and then a couple of miles of urban.

Just to correct an error I made......checked my new tyres and they are Primacy 3s rather than Pilot Sports.   Don't know why I did that! Sorry.
