Passat B8 unveiling - will Skoda really turn this into SUV?

Featured Replies

Nothing ground-breaking with the design but that's typical VW I suppose.  I like the overall look though and I'd be surprised if the new Superb would be that much different in overall design.  The big debate will be around engines for the new Superb - will the hybrid and bi-turbo find their way across to Skoda?

Looks pretty regular to me!

Maybe the SUV rumour is a premium Scout with a bigger purpose rather than just an Outdoor? additions seats that pop up to make it a 7 seater?

saloon, combi, and a shooting break!? Or they could just jump straight to a CC style saloon, and a shooting break combi! :) Only thing is Skoda tend to stay quite practical.

The bigger SUV should be pretty nice when we get one!

AFAIK the SUV rumour is quite legitimate, in that Skoda will produce an SUV and that will become the top of the range, but the Superb will continue in it's current format.

The SUV (in 5+2 format) is due to unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and will sit above the Yeti.

I like the Shooting Brake version...

I think they're going down the 911 road with each model blending out of the previous one so the 911 simply morphs into each new version without being radically different, bit like BMW in a way, you always know it's a BMW cos it always looks like one and very familar with the older ones.

Jake if you owned a VW it'll be the last VAG car you ever buy, overpriced ****e, rattle and squeak cabins being the least of the worries,

Ask anyone who bought a 2005 B6 and had the oil pump fail, the astonishing thing is they gave that engine to Skoda to put in the MK1 Superb knowing it was a timebomb,

The difference between a Superb 2 and a B6/7 Passat is like comparing a Wartburg to a Ford, it's unbelievable the two brands use the same parts bin, the Skoda's are built much better.

Heard rumours that this is actauly going to be called SnowMonster :D  :D  :D

Haha!  If only you knew that I actually had a 2005 B6 Passat, with the oil pump in question.  It didn't fail on me, but I did write a lot about how to prevent its failure over on another forum.  So I am actually well placed to compare the B6 you mention with the Mk2 Superb as I have owned them both.

You are right that I will probably never buy another VW: not because of reliability or build quality as I've had more than my fair share of "Friday afternoon" cars (I had a BMW that was a particular lemon) - but more down to my experience with VW dealers.  I find that these days there are so many VWs running as fleet cars that the dealers are so busy maintaining these that they have very little or no time for managing private customers appropriately.  I have found the same with Audi as well.  VW UK were actually pretty good to me for work that was out of warranty or a warranty grey area - one reason I will always try to maintain a full main dealer history on my cars.

Anyway, I digress.  What I really meant was "^^ This.  Please make this [skoda]. ^^".

I hope they are not going down SUV-lane, some of the main reasons I did chose Superb was that I could get a diesel automatic with 4x4 and avoid getting a SUV. I am leaning towards getting a Superb as my next car aswell, but possibly not if it's a SUV.

-Would like slightly more clearance though - ideally adjustable height - All those sleeping policemen are killing my car.

Very reminiscent of the current Octavia -especially from this angle  ;)

!

I think you might not be far off the mark there. Many of the shots we've seen so far would suggest a CC style. Slightly Lower and wider than the current model but still quite practical. Personally that would be my favourite design!

I see VW are also doing the false tailpipes like the vRS.... cost cutting!!!!

On the positive side, you'd only need to clean soot off of one of them.

Now that article makes a lot more sense!

Superb will be even more spacious - probably it means it will be little wider than now (not much sense to make it longer...).

The most interesting is the engine options. My bet that it will get less powered versions of Passat 2015 engines.

Let's hope they won't do what vw UK have done... and they still give us a range of decent petrol engines.

For anyone interested, avoid that 1.6TDi engine,

My mate has one in his Octavia and says it's underpowered to start with, he won't run the AC as it makes it totally undriveable in his opinion.

I was in a Superb 1.6tdi taxi the other day and thought it pretty quick for that size of engine. (I had a 2.0 TDi 140 Superb myself)

I asked the driver how he rated the engine, he said it was a bit weak in standard form but a re-map taking it up to 142bhp and 230lb/ft had made quite a difference.

Being a taxi driver he knows his average Mpg like the back of his hand, he had noticed an improvement of about 7mpg since the remap and was chuffed all round.

Maybe you could suggest a light remap of his motor

The issue comes later in the engines life - they are generally pushed very hard to make them work and as the mileage builds it begins to struggle.

I know a independent garage owner very well and they have no end of small engine (~1.6) vehicles coming in with high mileage and the engine is totally shot as they cannot cope. He does a lot of work for lease companies etc.

I disagree (partially), especially if you are talking diesel engines. Diesels normally come from the manufacturer running very lean in order to meet emission regs. These engines have quite a headroom of tune left in them hence why you can have several states of tune across the range, or in VAG Group terms, makes. It also allows independents to tune them both well & badly.

To keep the fuel air mix ratio right, more fuel needs more boost (in theory), if you want even more power (but to maintain emission limits) you can fit better more complex higher flow rate injectors as increasing boost is relatively simple to increase.

On you point of engines being shot much sooner, you do have a point however it is also down to how the car has been looked after. Some ppl drive their cars hard, others like big Jessie's. If you increase power & torque, all the mechanicals will take extra strain throughout their life; turbos, injectors, dual mass flywheels, gearboxes, clutch k brakes etc), but if you wait until the car is run in and hot before driving it like you stole it, you reduce some of those issues.

My mk5 Golf GT 170 was remapped to 211bhp and 338lb ft of twistys and I noticed that my dual mass flywheel started clunked much more as it was taking nearly 80lbs ft more torque than it was rated for. It was the weak point in the system and ready for an aftermarket upgrade if I'd kept the car.

Your final comment about lease cars, they are nearly as fast as hire cars and they will be driven hard most of their tenure (not by all) with full throttle applications when the engine is cold cold. Also, with smaller engines now powering ever larger cars, unless they are over engineered they will wear out quicker, that is understandable.

My taxi driver friend in my previous post ran an annual mileage of nigh on 55,000 and had had this remap on for near on a year. He was approaching 78,000 and had had nothing go wrong with his yet. He does lots of city driving so his motor isn't laboured with many full throttle applications, he just likes the extra poke when driving it privately and normally runs his car for 3 to 4 years before changing it and said that only one of his last three cars (all remapped) had had issues (a Peugeot) with two blown turbos.

If a remap is done well and the car driven considerately (no full throttles when cold) then yes, wear will increase but not massively. Of course the flip side to this is a car driven hard, that as you would expect will die much sooner than planned.
