Improving tv sound

Featured Replies

I've got a Sony Bravia TV, which is good, but the sound is sometimes a bit lacking.

I don't want to have a big surround sound system, or run wires around the room. I was hoping that there would be some way of plugging in a Bluetooth dongle thing which would transmit the sound to speakers.

Any ideas?

Sony and Samsung do wireless speaker sets with a unit by the TV.

Or go for a Sonos unit?

Do they use a RCA output to a Bluetooth transmitter?

Most will use the optical connection on your TV.

I demoed a Sonos Soundbar: not cheap but very good and can be linked to wireless satellite speakers if desired (and pockets deep enough).

Not neccessarily the best sounding for just TV, but it is good with music as well whereas most lack in this area.

It's looking like a small soundboard in front of the TV. Not quite ideal but I don't really want to throw hundreds of pounds at the problem.

I have an old cambridge audio amp and a pair of speakers I saved from the tip (me mother wanted dab radio). Not ideal but cost nowt

I have a Sony Bravia and I agree that the sound is rubbish, so I bought a Sony sound bar which comes with a bluetooth bass speaker. not excellent but good enough.

This a youtube vid of one

I've got a Sony htfs1 2.1 system works brilliantly and is all hdmi pass through.

I moved to a dedicated 5.1 speaker setup years ago and havent used my main TV speakers for about 7 years now!

Well worth the investment - IMO.

I have a Sony LCD TV in one of the bedrooms and the sound is very disappointing, it has to be said.

A cheap step up from TV speakers (if you have it in place already), is to feed the sound into your hifi system

I was doing that for DECADES before surround sound systems came out.

Acoustic Energy Aego might be something to look at. IMO you're better off with a multimedia 2.1 system - a high quality computer sound system - if you like.

Search Google shopping for "multimedia sound system".

Better satellite speaker make the system resonable at playign proper audio. A lot of cheaper systems omit a tweeter in their satellite speakers. This hammers sound quality when playing pure audio.... i.e. not distracted by pretty pictures.

It's what I done for since Nicam stereo came out a long time ago.   Still sounds better than the newer sound systems specific to TV's.     Added a MJA pro 50 subwoofer a few months ago and it scares the hell out of the wife when there is a thunderstorm on TV.

Tbh I don't have a Hifi or any sort of dedicated sound system.

Likewise. What I do have is an old Panasonic TX28 PM1, with three levels of picture and either speech or music sound. Dual speakers and a decent audio stage. Powerful enough to make me keep the volume down . Problem with a lot of middle range sets is poor Audio out in first place, so adding a decent system after is a waste of time. It's the old computer addage- garbage in =garbage ut.

The Panasonic phono audio outputs (if you have them)  have nothing to do with the internal TV amplifier.  So what ever loudspeaker or amplifier you have in the TV, they will not affect the phono outputs.   You can then use the Aux input to any Hi Fi system you like.  Worth a try.

I always take the sound out before it reaches the TV, in the old days via the audio out of a NICAM video recorder, and more lately via the DTV box/Sat box/Internet TV box.

The fewer devices it goes through, the less messed it it is.

:giggle:    Yes, Best is not messed around with.

I have a 7.1 DTS master audio THX certified system along side my flagship SONY W905a and it makes it feel like your at the cinema when your playing a blueray.

Soundbars are ok but their pseudo surround effect will never cut the mustard in my mind. What you want (if your serious) is proper separate's and a big ass amp. Sub is important also I tried a KEF, REL and tannoy one until I settled on a paradigm unit.

If its SWMBO that's imposing the 'no visible speakers or wires' policy then you have four options as I see it:

1. Get some wireless speakers (compromise on quality)

2. Grow some balls man up and tell her your listening pleasure is more important than her feng shui minimalist décor!

3. ditch the b1tch

4. get some high quality flat ribbon speaker cable and hide under the carpet or chase into plaster and show off your expensive satellite speakers to all your male friends who will understand!.

I dont need a sub, my main speakers go so deep I had to mount them on concrete plinths to keep the deep bass under control, and placate the neighbours (and the neighbour's neighbours!!)

I've heard this said before until they installed a real sub. Unless your talking about music in which case your probably right. I'm talking about the Slam and punch of a sub during an explosion where it changes the air pressure in the room by shifting so much air that It makes you sick in your stomach and cover up to take refuge from the flying debris :p  that's obviously not coming.

Really??

Tthe example I use to show I dont need a sub is MiB, where Will Smith is waiting at the Tunnel Authority - next to the giant fan.

At normal listening levels, you can feel your leg hairs moving in time to the fan beat.

If you are spending less than £250 avoid soundbars/boxes as they add a load of bass and normally make voice worse!
