How not to drive and behave in snow.

Featured Replies

I drove a Nissan 240SX (S13) through a few Minnesota winters and never got seriously stuck (even drove on snowmobile trails). It always bugged me how many people insisted you need 4x4 to get through the season. 4x4 will help you go faster, but it doesn't help you stop or turn. Winter tires improve it all, and they are much cheaper.

All the above is largely true but a lot does depend upon the design of the summer tyres - most nowadays (and those in the Kuga video above) are unfortunatey very similar and have large circumferential (longitudinal) grooves for water dispersion and no cross-sipes and hence will have very little traction on snow.  However other summer tyres, such as those with a directional V-tread for water dispersion, or no longitudianl grooves but larger cross-sipes will fare much better.  Granted not as good as a pukka winter tyre but significantly better all the same.  Just take a look at a decent winter tyre and they all generally have a deep V-Tread with wide cross-sipes as well as a different compound etc.  If you can only afford one set of tyres there's a lot to be said for choosing your tyres carefully based on where you live and what you'll encounter.

the mistakes? the wrong tyres, trying to go uphill, using too much throttle/steering, not having a shovel or some sand/gravel

the wrong behaviour? completely losing it, leaving the car in drive and getting out, not just giving up

- but it does have to be said, deep wet snow is pretty terrible if you actually want to get somewhere...

I feel my stock reply of "Stupidity, natures population control" best fits this guy!

Why not get the car mats out and place them under the wheels, or take of the lead boots!!

I like the way he got what looked like kitchen town to clean the mess on his floor.......yet smacked the wheels and side of the vehicle on the kerb!

Ah, another invincible 4x4 driver in snow. And this was a proper 4WD too, not some rubbish pseudo-4x4.

Gotta try snow tyres on the front of a polo n summer tyres on the back.

Lift off oversteer to the extreme. Brilliant fun.

Or buy a RWD ;)

My mate is just like this, bangs on about his great yankie 4x4 and how my stupid Skoda will get stuck in the snow when it snows......yet I'm the one that doesn't have to stay indoor because I'm stuck!

If in doubt. . . . . Flat out

My fwd corsa handled snow better!

Or buy a RWD ;)

But then id get stuck a lot more haha

But think of the fun you'd have getting stuck :P

Although I've always found this an interesting video tbh

Ah but a little 1.2 polo with skinny winter tyres will keep going far after that m3.

Only time iv had it stuck is when it bellys out. N only the ground clearance of a 4x4 can cure that haha

My 1.2 Fabia on 165 Hankook winter tyres! Absolutely brilliant! Happily climbs snowy and icy hills!

Probably pretty similar to the polo i used to have winters on. 165/70 r14?

Oh and we kept em on all year round till just recently.

They sure do squeal when you throw em around a corner with winters in, in the summer haha.

That's the ones! They're still on it now! Went round a Yorkshire roundabout too fast on them! Hell of a squeal lol
