Reversing uphill to parallel park with DSG

Featured Replies

Thanks for this post and answers! I just tried to back up a very steep hill into a parallel park and its bloody hard if you drive it like an auto!

As far as I understand it, a DSG Gearbox is NOT a Auto gearbox.... DSG is a manual gearbox that is controlled electronically to do everything for you, which is why it will roll on hills and slopes which full auto's tend not to ..

I have noticed with mine (first DSG) if the slop is quite steep you seem to have to give it a little more throttle to get it moving than my manual cars, especially in reverse, but it is a bloody big car, and not light which won't help Lol

Having had the Hill Hold Control and XDS enabled on mine yesterday ...

Further to this, the HHC has 3 levels of clutch slipperyness (or slippyness for your poms) selectable via VCDS.  Default is mid-range, I turned mine up to higher (the label in VCDS is something like "more revs and more slip") and it made reversing up my driveway a bit easier.

Potential downsides: more clutchpack wear but as it's a wet clutch anyway i doubt it will make a detectable difference.

I've not noticed an issue reversing up hills (and there are a few over here.... :) )

I can't believe VAG would design a car that does not reverse up an incline...

I think practice and technique is key (although Wokwon's post is useful - didn't know that).

I experience a small issue a few weeks ago while reversing up my fathers drive.

It's pretty steep and just big enough for my car.

I wasn't touching the throttle and it was just moving on tickover.

As it was so steep the engine almost stalled but before it did the clutch completely released until I pressed and released the brake pedal again. I assume it did this to prevent the engine stalling.

I tried again with a very light touch of the throttle and it managed it fine.
