Mk II Post FL, 1.9 TDI 105, stage 1 remap fuel economy

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am wondering if it is worth getting the Octy remapped. Partly because of where the torque comes in, but mostly because many remaps seem to offer around 8% or more improvement in mpg and we're doing 16,000 miles p.a at the moment and that's going to increase soon.

Some back of the envelope numbers suggest that using premium diesel at 1.38 per litre and allowing for Mrs H doing most of the driving, all other things staying the same e.g. weight in car, type of driving, her style of driving etc. annual fuel costs will decrease by £125 which will cover the annual increase on the insurance (£50!!) and cover the cost of the remap in under 4 years.

So the question is, is an 8% (or more) improvment in fuel consumption something people are getting in real life?

The remaps I am looking at are putting the PS to 135-140, cannot remember the torque numbers.

Thanks

Matt

The improvement comes from having more power and so the engine not having to work as hard to achieve the same acceleration as before.

Most people with remaps do seem to report an increase in economy.

I'm tempted with a remap myself on my PD105.

Most maps are around the 140bhp mark and about 230lb/ft of torque I think.

Around the levels of a stock PD130 really. 150bhp is achieveable with the PD105 but it's pretty much flat out for the turbo and injectors so not ideal.

Where were you thinking for the map?

Hi

I am looking at using Shark who will add 35 ps and 60 foot pounds to the torque, or angel tuning for whom the numbers are 45 and 65 respectively.

However I have yet to look at reviews for latter whilst Shark seem to have a good reputation here.

Remap science offer 30 and 61 but again I have yet to research them.

Everyone seems to rave about Shark remaps. If I was to get one I think I would go with them.

A 2l 16V BKD-engined Octavia, so not a 1.9, but I just had it remapped by Perfect Touch in Hoddesdon (just North of the M25) with the specific aim of improving economy, and it has certainly done that to a small degree  (probably a couple of mpg) but the improvement in the way in which it now drives is very noticeable.

It now pulls much more smoothly from around 1100 rpm in 5th & 6th gears and runs all the way up to around 5000 if I need to push it that far (which I don't!).

I was very impressed by the time (about 2hrs)  and care taken by the rolling road tech (I think his name is Carlo, but I could be wrong there) and in the resulting performance, and that also amounted to a substantial hike in the torque (which is why it drives so smoothly) and in power (around 30+bhp at the top end).

Cost was around £300 on top of several hours thoroughly checking the engine out beforehand to ensure that there were no underlying faults - in fact there were not, and it looks like the engine was performing to VAG spec beforehand.

Maybe they could do something similar for your engine?

PS - the only downside to the whole thing was that it looks like the prolonged session on the dyno has caused the EGR cooler to leak slightly and so that needs to be changed in the near future

Okay, thanks.

Another question....looking around Google it seems that 50 quid extra on the insurance for a stage one remap is a bit steep given the car, my age (42), and that Mrs H is the main driver and we are social and pleasure only?

I am with Admiral and I phoned them up yesterday about this, and was expecting a rather concerned response and a substantial premium hike.

However, I described the remap, quite correctly in the circumstances, as an "economy remap" and then was asked if I had made any other mods to the car - which I was able to confirm that I have not, with the exception of fitting a pipercross foam air-filter element (which is probably partly why it breathes pretty well at high revs for a standard induction system).

After a few minutes on-hold whilst she looked into it, the lady came back and confirmed that there would be a £17 admin charge to update the paperwork - but that is all!

I'm 66, (going on 67 !), and age and recent driving record do make a difference - and so similar factors would come into it in your case. OTOH, I was expecting at least a £50 hike myself, so I don't think that that amount would be considered excessive in the circumstances (I've been running mildly modded cars for many years, and it was sometimes difficult to get cover at all, and even then the prices were often quite a bit more than for the standard cars!).
