Speedo problems not working

Featured Replies

Hi Chaps,

Just got my new.. err 2001 Elegance estate bought with no engine. Used my battered 2001 tdi hatch engine as a doner and sent car to the graveyard

The guy who did the heart transplant has done a great job he is a VW approved indy specialising in Audi VW Seat  Skoda he has all the vcds.£200 including regas of A/C and swapped clutches and gearbox

Now the problem is my speedo does not work and when I go round a bend the fuel needle moves noticeably, the ns window is dead and the door mirrors dont work I suspect this car was laid up for some months as there's lots of green moss on the window seals.

I note on old threads that the harness feeding the cluster can have issues with water ingress and the sensor on the gearbox could also be a cause.

However, from what I read the speedo may be driven via the ABS system.  Which is correct  gearbox or ABS?

Just a point of note my garage chap said numerous wires have been cut around the ecu battery area and re- jointed with proper VW connectors suggesting the previous owner had issues. My next door neighbor is a manager with VW and he looked at the cars history which was Skoda from new up to Jan 2014, There is quite a few entries listed for repair repair repair but nothing is detailed. I wonder if there was an underlying electrical problem here that the dealer could not suss giving rise to the car being PX in Jan 2014?

Sorry for shaggy dog story I have tried to give relevant info.

Cheers

Col

I recently had a dead speedo, power steering light on and fuel gauge that dropped to empty on cornering. Turned out that when I changed my bearings I broke my abs sensors. Changed them yesterday and speedo is working fine and fuel gauge etc is back to normal. Due to this im pretty sure its driven by the abs system. Just need to find out what part of the system is at fault? Is the abs light on?

Hi RG no...  just the speedo and drunken fuel gauge  M8

The fuel gauge is definatly tied up with the speedo not working as I had exactly the same when I managed to break my speedo drive while changing the clutch! You will probably also find that the computer doesnt work properly either. The speed drive is on the gearbox a little electronic thing with a plug on it. Although this may / maybe not be the fault on yours??

If it does use a speedo sensor on the gearbox it should be easy enough to check by taking the air box off.

When I swapped my gearbox I made a the mistake of letting water get into the connector, that killed the speedo signal, easy enough to fix by unplugging and blasting it out with compressed air.

Otherwise you are into more involved fault finding.
