Octavia 2 - Speedo perspex broken in a foolish mistake, can it be replaced?

Featured Replies

Hi All

My speedo has an issue where the LED's flicker so was attempting to remove the cluster. when at the stage of inserting the trim removal clip(s) at the top upon levering the perspex shattered per attached image & I now have a nice missing triangle. I fear the years have not been kind to it. Hopefully more of an annoyance than an MOT failure & the dials are still functional!

Car in question is a UK 2011 1.6tdi Octavia estate (elegance)

In the question of "how much is this learning experience going to cost me"

  • can the perspex be bought separately & if so where from/is there a part number or

  • do i have to replace the whole cluster and do I need to get the ECU recoded if I do? (I can see on ebay they go for ~£50 odd so not outrageously expensive)

Thanks in advance

The Perspex is clipped to the covering trim. Easiest way is get a new cover with Perspex from a scrappy.

Look on here for other posts that include access to the display panel as they also describe how to remove the cover.

You cannot remove the Perspex from the trim cover with the trim cover in place as the fixing clips are inside.

Thanks, good to know. At least I can now practice on the broken one knowing I can't make it much worse! Now to find a scrappy

Please ignore my previous posts on this problems. I had mixed up in my mind the repair done on a different model.

You can remove the display panel by removing two screws and then release it from clips at the top of the bezel.

To reach the screws you need to remove the facia trim from the left and right sides of the steering column plus the central trim over the steering column. To remove the light switch from the trim you turn the switch knob a few degrees clockwise from off and then pull out.

After removing the display panel you would have access to the clear plastic panel. What I don't know is whether the plastic panel comes away with display panel, like some other models, or if it is fastened permanently to the dash panel, which I suspect.

If you choose to cut it out and replace it, you would have to ensure that all the plastic around the edge are also removed to avoid having a height difference which could stop you screwing the display panel in correctly.

Thanks for that, I've sourced a whole display model off of ebay which came off of the same model & looks the same in photos.

Once I've got all the parts I'll go for take II of trying to remove the panel and have a look as to what is holding it on & will post photos of what I find should someone make the same mistake as I did in the future!

Once you have the panel can you place a photo on here before you do anything as members on here might be able to give their experience on the next steps.

The Haynes manual for the Mk2 Octavia gives instructions for removing the display panel and a few pictures.

Replacing the plexiglass with the speedometer removed takes less than 5 minutes and is usually self-explanatory.

Once I'd got it out, yes I agree - found this video on youtube which details the whole process well https://youtu.be/MZmu3QCJ1m0?si=lS293sIX1E2VN4mH&t=275 (is for LED resoldering ultimately)
