Ultimate MPG

Featured Replies

Recently aquired my first Fabia VRS and as you do been putting it through its paces. Thought id find out just how many mpg i could squeeze out of it, so driving from bromsgrove to gloucester with bp's finest in I sat just below 60 all the way and was gobsmacked with the figures! Crept up to just over 100mpg before the last couple of miles through town. Im expecting the computer to be a bit out, but hey, it makes my last car (focus 1.6tdci eco bubble) look thursty! And this is possible from a car mapped to 170bhp?!?! wow :)

Is it a BLT engine? The trip computer will be lying to you!

Mine used to average about 45-55mpg when it was remapped to about 170bhp.

Is that the instantaneous mpg or the average?

Yeah its 2007 so must be that engine. I had a feeling it would be out but still, even if i was doing 60mpg its still good for the lump under the bonnet. I would try to calculate but I couldnt drive like that every day (or any other day) lol

That was average over 100 miles

That was average over about 100 miles. 100 very long miles lol

Still quite impressive although the read out is really optimistic

Lately I've been taking mine out for some spirited drives while off work and I've watched the trip go from a 43mpg average to 47 while hooning it.

Not sure I'd believe the trip at all lol.

Even if the readout were (unlikely) 20% out, that still makes 80mpg. Are the wheels standard?  I've wondered with these if going up to 17 inch wheels (and 40 section rubber) if it throws both the speedo and trip computer out?

Best I've averaged measured at the pumps has been over 60mpg over 100 miles.

Best thing to do is brim fill it, look in the neck of tank and there is a little button, fill car til the pump stops filling then be careful press this button it releases the air in the tank enabling you to fit upto 50 litres of diesel, then drive it around and do the same on the next refill then divide mileage by fuel put in multiply by 4.5 (gallon) so 450miles by 50 litres equals 9 multiply by 4.5 equals 40.5 miles per gallon. Try it. I've managed 57-59 mpg from Wales to Teesside in a standard fabia vrs. Going to Scotland in October that will be a good mpg test on the old girl.

Yeah wheels are standard, Was running on bp ultimate diesel. I did exactly the same run again running on tesco diesel and computer said 85mpg. (Roads were quiet in evening and 90% motorway) Computer is probably out quite a bit as said and maybe there was a tail wind lol. Would the fuel really help  by 10%?  If so Im using it all the time! Havnt got patience to drive at 56 mph for a whole tank and work it out properly tho. New to Fabia's, Amazing machine.

Speed makes a big difference.  I've found that the difference between 75 to 77mph and 65mph = 10mpg.  I stuck at 65mph on a M/way jaunt a few days ago and averaged 74mpg.  Could only manage 64mpg at an indicated 75mph on the same 35 mile trip.  That was using ordinary diesel.  I tend to stick at between 65 to 70 these days on M/way (traffic allowing)  as over longer distances, with traffic, there's little benefit to fuel costs, time or to the licence travelling any quicker.  10mpg is quite an incentive!

below 60 on you spedo os about 55 at most in real.. I bet everything was overtaking you.and you was slowest on road

(presuming it was on a motorway) bet you was popular

eh? A joke right?  You assume wrong.  On both counts  ;)

GPS confirms that my "spedo" was within 3mph at 60 so do the maths.  It means at an indicated 65mph, I was doing around 62 and at an indicated 75, I was doing closer to 71 (allowing a similar percentage).  If traffic wants to loon done the outside lanes at a ton (plus) it's their licence not mine.  I am happy to drive to the legal limit and no, I was not being overtaken by everything as plenty of people drive at between 60 and 70 on the Mways these days to conserve fuel and because traffic is so heavy.  I was travelling faster than the HGVs so happy enough not to be tail gated by any 44 tonners. Point is (which I guess you missed  ) was that I wanted to see what sort of difference speed makes to economy and it makes a hell of a difference. you might have money to burn.  I don't.
