DOES THE SPEEDOMETER WORK FREEWHEELING ENGING OFF?

Featured Replies

Hi Chaps

Still trying to fathom dead speedometer

Changed gearbox driven speed sensor still nothing then swapped instrument pod from another car engine started but died in seconds with the car / spanner EML lit. Apparently the instrument cluster has an imobilzer chip that talks to the ecu so unable to test the other tacko / speedo...  Ah another brainstorm...

Just tried this tactic again with the 2nd pod wired in, switched ignition on then let car run down a long hill nearby engine off because of above the fuel and temp gauges worked but still no speedometer.

I would have thought with the diff turning ignition on and the sensor transferring pulses the speedometer would work.  Or am I wrong?

Not a great help I know, but I think! It should still work with the ignition on and engine off.

When I've been towing cars around, which I've done a lot of! All the speedos have been working.

the speedo works with engine running and in neutral so i wouldve thought it would work with engine off but ignition on too but im not certain

Don't forget, if the engine is not running you will have NO servo on the braking system  !!

No problem there,  I have size 11's and 18st 8lb of brake force!!!

You need to use vcds to check speedo head for working, in instruments you can in outut tests sweep the speedo needle thro the full range, which then eliminates as to where the fault lies.
