Help on exhaust choice please

Featured Replies

I'm still a bit miffed on the whole cat situation on these cars. Is it merely to reduce hydrocarbons and not soot? I'd have thought this must be the case with us not having a DPF.

So regardless of whether the car had a cat fitted from the factory, so long as it passes a smoke density test everything is ok? Just to add, why are people failing MOT's for having a mufflerectomy?

(sorry if this is viewed as O.T I thought this was a good thread to bring it up in).

i don't know why people are getting there cars failed for having the rear box removed, i personally would not.

to fail the smoke test the car basically needs to be dead lol.

you can fail a car for being to noisy comapired to standard car of equal comparison but i think them mot tester take it to serious

It is serious, VOSA is trying to get all the noisy, dirty cars off the road.

Yes mate there is a part I can click to fail noisy car lol

No, the cat is there to reduce NOx emissions, it's not a DPF, NOx is what causes that brown haze you see above cities on hot days, particulates are what makes your snot dark grey when you spend a day out in a city.

Yes so NOx wouldn't affect smoke density would it? So really other than I suppose having a guilty conscience in terms of pollution a cat won't make a blind bit of difference to the car actually passing the physical tests the MOT puts it through? All seems a bit odd to me lol.

Just out of interest and a question for the MOT tester amongst us, are there any incentives for MOT testers to fail a certain amount of cars to get them back for retests etc? Or is there a forced ranking type system that at least every 1 in 10 cars must fail or something daft?

There is no need for a high performance car to be noisy or dirty, dirty cars are just wasting fuel they should be using to make more power.

you will require a bigger front mount intercooler and a hybrid turbo with the exhaust system

where re you located jukie88

I'm down in Plymouth dude

We have no incentive to fail or pass cars. We don't get anything, we do get moaned from vosa if we don't fail some but not much they can do tbh

De-cat definitely makes a difference. I was running 219bhp with a full turbo-back Piper system with no boxes. All mapped accordingly. I then put the standard exhaust back on, and have found that it doesn't come on boost as quickly - it actually catches me out at times.

If you fit a de-cat then your turbo will likely be overboosting slightly, which is ultimately not good for your turbo. The noise will also be greatly increased - my system was hugely loud when coming on boost. Easily over 100db!

MOT wise, it is a new part of legislation that says that you have to have a cat fitted to a diesel if it was there from the factory. You may get some testers that will let it slide, but technically it's now a fail to have a de-cat fitted on the Fabia.

you just a turd, yes the bloke who's comes around and checks me once a year,

You work to a testers manual, all I asked for was a link to the part that says the tester must not leave the car during the test :)

Your just the sort of chav imo that should not be testing cars for there safety for road use.

Hopefully your VOSA bloke will call in and test you when you've passed a car with no rear box and see what he thinks!

We've got one on this forum posting above!!!!!!!

Bung him a twenty and a picture of your car and hey presto you get a MOT!!!! :x

ROFL, c'mon kev, he can barely read and write, how's he going to know what's in the manual, I know there are some pictures in there as well but it's leaving a lot to chance!

Good point :)

Scary to think of cars driving around tested by chavs :(

And tbh I'm a ****** when it comes to mot, I fail a lot of cars, go back to 306 oc where everyone on there hates you too please !

I only put that due to the fact last time I have some advise over an mot matter he comes running in slating me calling me a chav getting pretty fed up with that tbh!

What other parts did u have to reach 219 as that's roughly what I'm after ??

You could pass and advise if you were not sure it had a cat fitted as standard but also you could go and ring the dealer or vosa if you really wanted to at the end of the test. If you've got a valid reason to leave the test area then you ain't gunna get into trouble but if it's for something like a fitty came into reception so you've gone for a perv then yes they will say something about it. Think about when the computer goes down and you go to stand alone testing, how would you log off the test if you can't leave the test bay? Common sense really

You'll want a PD150 hybrid turbo and a decent front mount intercooler setup at the minimum. Then obviously a decent map. An uprated clutch is not always required, but in most cases it is, due to the large increase in torque.
