Build times ?

So is it a couple of months wait to know the build time? I thought it would be quicker.

  • Oh, I dunno... delivering to the North Sea may well take a little extra time

It all depends, on what though is anyone's guess!

Some people get a build week 10 mins after placing order, so have to wait. All depends on if the factory has a slot for your spec scheduled or not.

Some crazy built estimates in here. I can't work out how ive been given mine.

Order placed last week (week 35), and provisional build week of 38. So even if that moves back a few weeks thats still not very long at all.

I think ill take the estimated figure with a pinch of salt!

Probably a car already ordered by the dealer that they could adjust you your spec.

Finally, got a confirmed build week of next week, vRS TDI Estate. Placed the order first week of May and these months have passed painfully slow. I reckon delivery is usually 5 weeks later, right?

Me thinks they need a bigger factory.

Supply/demand... If they make it too easy to get hold of them there will be a surplus in the market, and owners will suffer poor residuals etc etc. Near all VAG cars run a decent lead time.

The car industry want to sell new cars, not have lots of used ones available for cheap.

I think there's a happy medium here. A car such as an Octavia should be available within one or maybe two months at a push, not the silly times people are quoting. A friend of mine (a Skoda salesman) has had quite a few cancellations from people not prepared to wait. The current supply/demand balance is way out of line.

I agree, some of these waits are mad, I myself am driving a loan Yeti from Skoda due to the extended wait on my Octavia. I genuinely like that these waits exist though, I am lucky enough to not worry too much if a car comes exactly on time or not, so plan well in advance (1 year usually) when ordering a new car, I then get to take advantage of the super-strong residuals when I come to sell, which generally is 18-24 months later as I get bored easily!

I got stung on a BMW 135i which from order to delivery was only 6 weeks, 11 months later it has lost 50% of it's invoice value!!! Conversely, my Audi SQ5 (which had/has similar wait times to the Octavia vRS) was sold at 14 months old for 77% of the original invoice price.

Am I being a bit dim? How is waiting longer for a new car to be built improving the residuals when it comes to selling it 18-24 months later?

Because those not willing to wait will pay more for a used one than if you could get a new one in just a few weeks. It makes it rarer and so more desirable/retains more value.

My SQ5 I actually could have sold for a profit in the first 3-4 months such was the demand! I had one of the first 3 or 4 delivered in the UK...

Our dealer told us that the higher specced it is, the quicker it's built and from what we've heard from other buyers it seems to be like that.

I think your dealer is talking rubbish.

Think about it practically..... Skoda receives some hundreds of thousands of Octavia orders a year. They wont be sorting through those in the way of, high spec front of queue, ah this one is low spec, let's put it to the back of the queue.

The way vehicles are built:

1.  Each country gets a quota

2.  Orders can be placed, but only once confirmed do they enter the build queue

3.  There is a "frozen" period during which spec changes are not accepted. This varies between manufacturers but can be 6 weeks before the production date, or it can be 12 weeks before production date.

No it doesn't make much sense to me but it seems to work out that way for whatever reason. They also say the TSI VRS estate is the one that takes the longest as it's the car that most are ordering. The quota in Spain is very very small, much smaller than the UK (although we're in an economic depression so they don't sell as many cars)

Just got a build date of week 40 (w/c Sept 29), from my order on July 19.

Hopefully it sticks :D

Apologies, I realise I'm updating two threads here, but I've just been told the car could be up to another 6 months away having already waited 4 weeks. Very disappointing.

Nice my build date is week 39 after ordering in May. Hopefully it doesn't change now.

I'm also now on b/w 40, order placed 4th July. It was originally provisionally scheduled for week 37. What's puzzled me, though, is that apparently the factory closure pushed it back, but I got the original b/w almost straight away after ordering. Why wouldn't the system factor in the factory closure in August when allocating slots? Seems a bit daft that they reschedule everything after the close, as I've been told by my dealer and as I've seen others say on here. Either way I don't really mind waiting. The only negative is a holiday around the b/w means it might now be difficult to sell my Fabia privately in time, and I hoped to get more than the PX for it. Oh well.

And even more worried ........

Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the wait guys!

Literally got a call today at 4.30pm. So you never know - check the phone tomorrow!

It's a Metal Grey TSI if that makes any difference to build weeks?

I'm expecting an update call on Friday, hopefully it is good news!

Hi,

New to the forum but have been reading and getting concerned about these build weeks.  Ordered my 1st ever Skoda an Octavia Elegance 2.0d 4x4 Estate on the 2nd of August.  Nothing to special race blue with winter pack and front parking sensors.  Was told by the dealer when ordering that the computer was giving them 11 weeks from Monday 4th August but nothing would be confirmed until the factory started back up after their holiday.

I checked with them today as I reckon the factory has been up and running now for 2 weeks since close down.  I had an email back saying the car still hasn't been allocated a build week, but other information has changed so the information should change soon ??  Reading this site there does not seem to be any logic form when from the date of order the car is allocated a build week.

There is logic, VAG logic... But they are yet to share what it is! Same if you order an Audi, VW or Seat. They all use the same procedures of allocating weeks and you never know when you are going to get it!

Once you have been waiting 12 weeks I think it is then customer services can step up the pressure to at least get you answers, but until that point you will just get a blank response...
