Fight between Yeti and a sign post....Yeti lost

Featured Replies

DSG lever doesn't move anywhere unless you put your foot on the brake, especially going into reverse, so that's very strange

Glad everyone's OK though

You can go from D to R without pressing the brake (& into P).

You just can't go from P to another gear without pressing the brake. Not sure if is limited to lower speeds. Only ever tried it when parking my S4 & it worked :)

Not sure of the sequence in the accident to know if that would have made any difference.

My mistake, maybe it's just habit, although it would be a good idea to go straight from D to R

They don't hang around getting them sold off do they!  Might make a nice car for someone. Any one needing to buy a Yeti parcel shelf, plastic boot divider type thing that comes with them or the various boot nets. All as new condition Have them all kicking around here some where. Also might be getting rid of the boot liner. Its not a genuine part but goes right under the rear seats so protects the carpet if you have the seats tumbled forward. ideal for tip runs. I will put pics up if we do sell it.

Not getting another Yeti then?

Not getting another Yeti then?

Possibly not. It's a Motability car and when looking for a replacement have found that the advance payment has over doubled what we paid 7 months ago. If we wanted to pay the same advance payment we would have to go down to an 'S' model which is a bit of let down compared to an Elegance Spec. Its amazing how quickly you get used to having certain little luxuries like heated leather, folding mirrors (not that ours folded for long before they packed in), xenon lights which are the best lights we have ever had on a car. (the Passat hire car we are running at the moment has candles for lights) which isn't good now the nights are drawing in. Also when we originally ordered the Yeti we had a dog as well a 3 year old but the dog has passed on so really don't think we need the tardis like interior even though it is useful for taking stuff to the tip etc. Problem is we still can't decide on a replacement but need to order within 2 weeks as Motability don't like having to pay for hire cars for too long. Test driving a Golf this weekend hopefully we won't fall asleep when we look at it.... Boring! Thats the problem with being used to DSG, no other auto is quite as nice which restricts us to VAG cars. We had a go in a MINI Countryman which is great to look at in all its bling but something was missing and I think it was the lack of DSG. Oh what to do?

Hi mandaroo,  am I right or wrong in saying;  I thought Insurance companies paid out the full value if the vehicle was less than 12 months old?

If so, do you know if 'The Motability Scheme' will get back the full price they paid, cos if so have you tried to twist (politely) their arm with a replacement?

With the situation you have, maybe checking with other Motability users that may have had the loss of their vehicle as well, how they coped/sorted out a replacement.

Would, is there a 'Gap' insurance available for Motability users? I know that's a bit late now but, looking to the future I guess a lot of other drivers would show an interest if there was.

I wish you well in your search for a replacement, may you both enjoy your choice and safe driving for the future.

No, not all of them do.

I'm with admiral and they say they pay "market value" - even in the first year.

But as they were significantly cheaper than the competition we went with them anyway.

I checked with my insurance wether they pay out full value if the vehicle is less than 12 months so that I could defer my GAP insurance for this period. I now have piece of mind for 4 yrs.:)

Glad that everybody was safe after accident. I'm just in the process of my Advanced Drivers Course and your picture confirms just how little speed is needed to do an awful lot of damage.

Hav you looked at the Nissan alternative, or even the Suzuki.

There is probably no need for GAP insurance at all come year2. The amount owing will probably be similar to or less than the market value of the car so GAP won't pay you anything even if you claimed.

Vehicle Replacement gap insurance can be taken out to return you to the place you were before the insurers start cutting corners. If your car costs £15000 when you take it out, and you have a total loss claim paid by the insurers of £10000, then gap "vehicle replacement" insurance will pay you the difference to buy a new car of the same spec as the one you lost. So if the new cost of the car you write off has risen to £16500 you'll get a payout of £16500 (new car cost) less £10000 (insurance payout) = £6500. So you then have the money to buy a car of the same spec as you lost.

Hello Mandaroo,

Sorry to hear of your Yeti's demise,  and glad to hear SWMBO is A-OK!

Have you tried a Roomster, yes they're an acquired taste visual-wise, but amazingly spacious and versatile, and likely available with same 1.2 tsi engine with DSG box, prices modest as totally new model on it's way.

Lower driving position than Yeti, no 4WD option, you'll possibly want some better headlight bulbs, not sure about the luxury options, great value for money, and if you need to take FOUR (ex-builder's sand 1-ton capacity) bags full of leaves and twigs to the tip, once you've lifted the three back seats out they went in a treat, took two of us to manhandle each one in and out, and I was driving using side mirrors only!

Yes I was quite surprised at the damage from such low speed but all modern cars have crumple zones that are designed to take the impact so the occupants don't. And I for one am glad of this. A car can be replaced.

Still not sure what it's replacement will be. SWMBO not keen on the looks of the Roomster. The S-Cross with auto box is very expensive on Motability, as is the Nissan cashcow. The Juke on the other had is very cheap even top spec but I think it's a bit of a hairdressers car.

I wouldn't like to trust what hair I have got left to a Juke owner/driver. :giggle:

Once you've had a Yeti, it must be difficult to cope with anything else.......

High driving position, versatile seating/load area, comfort, space for 4 adults with legs, reliability, economical to run and the fact that it's a YETI!

Yep nothing seems to stand out as much as the Yeti. Had a drive in a new Golf at the weekend and have to say when inside it is a brilliant place to be. With it being much newer than the Yeti the quality of materials etc is outstanding. The spec isn't too bad either and safety equipment is really good with radar on the front etc. It does appear to be the only car you will ever need.... unless you like your car to look interesting and not just a mode of transport. I really think that if we end up with one we might loose it in a car park as it is so dull from the outside. Oh well off for a look round some more dealerships. Not sure how many more salesmen/women we can cope with.

Well after walking round dozens of dealerships we have finally settled on a replacement for the Yeti  Although it's not another Yeti we are staying with Skoda and have decided to downsize/grade to a Rapid Spaceback SE Sport 1.6tdi DSG (the one with all the black glass bits). We would have liked a 1.4 tsi but needed the car asap so chose one from the Stock pile which were all diesels. Should arrive in 3 weeks.

If the towing limit was better I'd quite happily have a Sportsback.

I had one as a loan car for a day and was not impressed. After the Yeti the driving position was, to me, undrivable. I did however like the 1.4tsi engine.

Speak to The Plumber, he recently upgraded from an Octy III to a Spaceback....

Fred

I had a 1.2 Rapid Elegance (late 13 model) as a loan car for the last 2 days while my Yeti was being serviced and bonnet blown plus a bit of bling on rear pipes.

Must say I honestly hated the Rapid, found it very hard to judge where the bonnet ends ,rear vision not great and for an Elegance I was not impressed with standard level of fittings ,

Although must admit the engine was very willing and plenty of interior and boot space.

With the bit of extra height and driving position the Yeti gives I found the Rapid  uncomfortable.

But this is only my view, we all have different tastes so good luck mandroo I hope you enjoy your choice.

The Rapid Elegance isn't the same as a Sportback, so perhaps not a fair comparison?

Fair point Graham,I have no great knowledge of the Sportback but would the rear vision be the same ? and would there still be limited vision over the front end?

Maybe tomorrow I'll answer my own queries and nip up to our local dealer and have a peek just out of curiosity. :dull:

The Rapid and Rapid Sportback are only different at the rear, unless you nitpic about small things.

I had a Rapid Elegance (almost the same inside as the Sportback, I've looked) and it went after a few months.

It's a regular car and doesn't have the all round usability my Yeti has.

Towing limit is too low, driving position is too low, interior tech far worse (based on mk2 Fabia from 2007), no 4x4, no decent (over 120bhp) engines etc...

It's just a normal budget family car with decent space inside.  If that's what you want it's ideal.

Sport seats I found very comfortable though.

The bluetooth stalk arangement alone shows how backwards the tech is, compared to the Yeti/Octy/Superb multi-function steering wheel.

Not filling me with confidence here. Like I say we would have loved another Yeti but wasn't prepared to pay twice as much as we did 7 months ago due to it being a Motability car. Oh well. only have it for 3 years then will be replaced. Only problem is, at the rate Motability prices go up we will only be able to afford a Suzuki Alto etc. Not looking forward to that!
