Wishbone front bolt seized

Featured Replies

Hey guys, got a mate to do a homer and replace the wishbones on my vrs. Passenger one was replaced no bother but drivers side front bolt is seized into the subframe. He tried to remove it but doesnt want to shear the bolt and leave me carless.

Options? Get a seconhand subframe? Anyone got one cheap?

Cheers, Andy

Think its the same frame that holds console bush.

Hot spanner.

He put heat on it but made no difference, neither did impact wrench.

It's a bugger when this happens.  The part number, I think, is 6Q0199294D for an offside console, which should help with an ebay search. 6Q0199294J is how genuine ones are sold from VAG now, which includes the console bush (1K0407183E version), ready-fitted. About £105 from TPS I seem to recall.  Various cheaper options for new pattern parts surely can be found, and secondhand is an option if you can be confident that the thread you're having trouble with hasn't been damaged in the part's past life.

You'll also be wanting a new one of the long bolt that's currently stuck, N 10640301.

the problem is the bolt is steel and the console bracket is ally so when the steel rusts it fuses with the ally, I had the same problem when I had mine replaced, the garage said it was common with VAG cars and said they could try and heat it but 9 times out of 10 the bolt sheared before it gave.

So snap it off and drill it out, I had to do this on a Bora recently with an ARB droplink bolt into the lower wishbone and one of the rear dogbone bolts as well, that car was from Scotland, I think it's because your roads are a lot saltier up there during the winter.

One of mine (driver's side) felt like it was going to snap when I did my console bushes. To my relief I managed to get it out and it tightened back up OK on reassembly with a new bolt. I reckon the ally console threads wouldn't stand up to it being removed again though.

I could be completely wrong here, but the OP used the term "front bolt" so to me that means the small bush end and there is no aluminium console up at that end.

the front subframe is made up of 3 parts the central part, then 2x alloy console arms on the end, since the wishbone connects directly to the alloy arms you can replace ether of the alloy arms separately without the need to replace the entire subframe.

This must be a common problem, when I did the suspension on my car I faced the same problem, I managed to get them free in the end but not without shredding the threads inside the arms, same on both side, ended up need to replace both console arms, but still a much cheaper option than replacing the entire subframe.

You could also same money on used parts by knowing that these console arms are exactly the same on the VW polo as they are on the VRS even though the sub frame central part is different, new these things are around £75 each, and that's cheap as you will find

but I managed to pick up a complete subframe from a 2003 1.4 Polo for £40, even though the subframe its self was useless to to me the console arms where the same, when looking at different models use part numbers to verify 6Q0199293D / 6Q0199294D is what you need one near ther is far side, not sure which is which you will have to check to see assuming you only need one of them.

One bolt goes through the lot.

I have a spare set of Fabia vRS swingarms, consoles and the subframe in the middle.  Let me know if interested. :)

It also has cupra bushes fitted. :)

So snap it off and drill it out

+1 on this.

I had mine sheer at such a point i could not get the wishbone off but could remove the assembly from the sub frame. so i pulled the ally console mount out, trimmed the bolt with a hacksaw so that i could remove the wishbone then once it was off I ground it flat with an angle grinder, centre punched it and then worked my way up to a 10.5mm drill bit. then dug out the M12 tap and ran it through, I was pretty central so it only slightly damaged the thread but was still serviceable.

Even better was the tap grabbed the remenants of the bolt and turned it out the other end so it ended up pretty much like a heli-coil.

may have to give that a go mate, a guy i work with is giving me an impact ratchet you hit with a hammer and it loosens it bit by bit. Hopefully it will help. If not ill be chopping it out lol :)

cheers bud, i think ill look out for a used part if i can get it. I drive 5-600 miles per week so can't have it off the road too long. My tracking is way out now though as ive got 1 new wishbone fitted, what a difference it makes having new bushes fitted though :)

think this could be the cause mate, the amount of mile i do and the fact i don't have an undertray means the elements are hitting it full on too.

thanks for the info mate, if the thread is damaged i could tap it as i have a metal fab shop in my work ( a prison ) lol give the cons something to do ;)
  • 3 years later...

currently fighting with this little problem mine are moving but at extreme torque, im talking t bar with a 3 foot extension and me heaving and im not a small lad, but they are screwing in and out...just not loosening off any i suspected they were loctited but heat has done ****, so its 100% semi seized, will try a gun on it tomorrow, with any luck it should work as its moving, but thanks for the info folks.

Brace yourself for sourcing some new/replacement consoles, or helicoiling.

great

Galvanic corrosion is wonderful isn't it.

If it is just spinning and not coming out then the thread inside the aluminium arm has stripped.

I had a free day last year to replace my console bushes with meyle heavy duty ones and new wishbone arms. The same thing happened to me and the O/S one seized and when it did come out it brought all the aluminium thread with it. So my free day (which was Christmas eve) I spent messing around all day and even drove up to Birmingham to get a second hand arm.

It ain't coming out in that case. Mine came out with hardly any effort once cracked off slightly, as been said above get a replacement console and bolt lined up if you need the car back on the road.

its not spinning luckily its turning and still threaded, its just stiff but theres no sign of it locking up don't want to jinx it but it MAY come out ok... will leave the other side for a bit after ive done this one and maybe invest in a helicoil kit before i work on it.

I think even if it comes out it aint gonna go back in and torque up. You may be lucky, but id always plan for the worse!
