1.9 tdi slx turbo issue

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just purchased an S-reg Octavia 1.9 tdi slx with 95k miles. The car is in mint condition, however, I have NO power.

I believe it to be a turbo issue - at or above 2000 rpm the car has no pull and requires a downhill to overtake anyone.

Have read a few things about mr muscle down some pipe, an 'italian tune up', Mass flow something, replacing pipes, etc but really unsure where to start. I hope I haven't bought a car that will need hundreds of pounds to fix but seeing as this is my first ever car I'd like to get it running properly so it'll do another 100'000 miles.

What is the first thing to do? Take it to a garage and have it checked for fault codes? Is there anything I can do at home right now?

Cheers

Alex

Right now you can unplug the MAF sensor. Its a sensor attached to the airbox. If its buggered the car will run better when its unplugged. Its a free check to do

I dont have a picture of the TDI engine but on a petrol its the plug in the picture

Thanks very much BrownBarge that's instantly helped, much more acceleration beyond 2k rpm. Is this temporary fix safe to drive with till I can get the car looked at?

Its safe yeah the car will use default settings instead of maf readings. Get yourself a new maf if unplugging it makes it run better, best off buying a genuine one from skoda cheaper ones are not up to the job

As above get a replacement from Skoda. They do them on an exchange basis, think mine was about £75. I drove my car there then swapped them over in the car park. Don't forget to be cheeky and ask for a discount - in my experience most dealers will knock 10% off if you say you're a member of the owners club.

Thanks for the replies, is there a possibility that after changing the MAF there could still be further issues?

Hi zazer I got a mk1 octy tdi recently too with same issue, i tried unplugging maf on way home with it and a lot better(helped price but i knew what it likely was). Got a new Bosch MAF and its like a brand new car again. Very basic plug and play item the MAF and its housing come out with 4 small bolts and a retaining clip holding air hose onto it. Have look on youtube for '1.9tdi thermostat change' will give you an idea of how easy it would be to take 10 mi to do yourself.

FUBAR where did you buy your Bosch MAF from? Any cheaper than the £75 from a skoda dealer?

You could try TPS if there is one close to you, since they supply OEM parts. However not all sell to the public, as they are meant to be trade only hence the name (Trade Parts Specialist). Otherwise dealer only, don't trust the ebay specials they are a case of buy cheap, buy twice.

WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT BUY  A NON GENUINE OEM MAF

The engines dont like them and they fail ridiculously quickly.....
