Turbo change @ 100 K ?

Featured Replies

Octavia 2003  1.9 TDI

Hi All

My turbo failed a few weeks ago, I've been told that I should have had it changed at 100,000 miles.

I got the cambelt, water pump and a proper oil service done in March to try to prevent disaster, but when the turbo failed it sucked the sump dry and took the big end shells with it.

Is there anything else I should know?

Cheers

Pete.

Nonsense to replace it at a set interval. I think youve just been unlicky

Very unlucky

I have a customer in a passat same turbo and engine done 275k :-)

What rubbish.  Turbos included on the service interval for a reason - they don't need changing!  Mines currently at 235,000miles...

Hi Guys,

I have a question. My octi just clocked 110k kms recently. The pickup has reduced a bit could intercooler be a cause for this… I have added a pic to show its conditionnavagypy.jpg

More likely something else - MAF, CTS, dirty air filter, sticky vanes, vacuum leak, n75, MAP....  However fault codes are really needed, otherwise we can only make a finger in the air guess.

5th person to have a turbo that's gone comfortably over 100k miles. If I speak for the taxi drivers I know who're not on Briskie, more like 55th.

Got car scanned MAF is good and there aren't sticky vanes… yes the mechanic said that there is slight play in turbo(I am not sure what that exactly means)… but yes I am getting "emissions workshop" error and upon scanning got " egr regulation range exceeded"

But reduced pickup and reduced top speed happened much earlier than this error

my 90bhp 2004 VNT is up to 164k miles still on original Turbo.... and still pulling plenty hard...

Have to agree just bad luck....

130K, stage 2 remap n still going strong.

Never used oil or water in the 121K that I've owned her, and certainly no turbo issues!

204k on mine.

last car 273k  - engine blew and wasn't worth fixing. scrapped with Turbo still fine

Hi All.

Thanks very much for the replies, I feel a bit better now it's not all my fault!  Although it's worse news now. I just heard from the garage who fitted the new turbo and they say the big end shells checked out OK but the car is blowing out blue smoke under load and the sump is pressurising, They say they suspect the pistons and bore are damaged and it's not worth repairing  :S It's a shame because it has been a great car.

Very sad and fed up  :'(

Pete

... is this the same garage who told you the turbo shouldve been replaced at 100k telling you its now not worth fixing?

There has been a couple of other blown turbo threads here and the blue smoke could just be from the oil getting pulled through when it went bang.

Id maybe get it to somebody else for a second opinion, and park it some where to let it run for a while - the smoke may clear once its burnt off.

If it is fubared theres no real risk attached to trying - cant make it worse!

Thanks mac11irl,

good point, I'm bringing it home tomorrow I'll see what happens and consider my options, the last thing I want is to scrap it.

Hopefully its just an mechanic taking punt on you being clueless and willing to hand over shillings, and nothing actually terminal, as these are great cars that just keep giving.

they can do pretty much anything you can throw at them.

Ok, got the car home, sounds good and runs fine until I rev it, then the exhaust note changes and it pops and crackles a bit. When I take off the oil filler cap with the engine running and put my hand over it I can feel gases coming out like when you put your hand over the exhaust pipe. Also the car starts to smell like exhaust fume inside. Any suggestions please?

Pete

When running, the oil is circulating and heating up, so the gases coming out i would imagine (having never done that tbh) it would happen regardless.

the fume smell could be oil that leaking somewhere, burning and getting drawn into the vents..

Should have air coming out the oil cap its normal.

Octavia Update.

Hi,

I started it up and let it tick over for about 15 mins – no smoke apart from the normal start up smoke, then increased revs in 1000 rpm stages, up to 5000 rpm and held it there – still no smoke.

Plugged in the U281 scanner, found codes

17563 - Manifold Abs.Pressure Sensor (G71): Circ. Short to B+

17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation

Any opinions would be welcome, as I am at a bit of a loss with diesel turbo stuff

Thanks

Pete

Also still got exhaust smell in the car

if you can find someone with VCDS to get the missing parts of the fault codes then that may help as you do not have the whole picture.

VCDS will tell you how often the fault has occurred and if they are intermittent or not.

Manifold pressure sensor dead or wiring problem.

Sticking turbo vanes too. Mr Muscle fix needed.

Worth doing a VCDS instrument check on the N75.
