Use of spare fuse position

Featured Replies

Spent this afternoon wiring in a 12v splitter behind the drivers glove box to run my phone charger and inforad gps camera detector/indicator

I have used a fuse piggy back into the fuse box and found that fuse 36 "headlight left" was not used but was switched with the ignition.

All seems to work okay but just wondered what "headlight left" was for (clearly not my headlights they work without a fuse in here) and if any reason I should not use it.

Slightly off topic question - were you able to get that resistor bar on the left side of the glovebox hooked back on??

Yes no problem.  Getting it back on was the least of my problems.  Getting it off was the fun part trying to decipher the dodgy instructions in the manual (thanks to a couple of posts here for a pointer or two)

Used a kitchen knife (although guess a screwdriver should do the job) in through the removed side panel to push the hook on the bar into the ruff position then just used it to push it down and lock it back into position all of 10 seconds.

Once you have done it once its all so obvious and you just don't know what took you so long.

That's why the instructions show you how to do it with the screwdriver in the cars toolkit. :D

Re dodgy handbook instructions - with respect to our Czech cousins on building great cars, why don't they - and this applies to many non-UK manufacturers - get a native english speaker to edit/proofread the manuals? Or won't their masters in Wolfsburg allow it? Just wondering.

Screwdriver? I used brute force!

I must admit, getting it off is a doddle, but getting it back on again is a pain the first time, after you have done it once though you wonder what all the fuss was about!

Blimey.  What a faff. But most of it was done in the dark.

Finally got round to taking a live feed from the fusebox for my videocamera (a Transcend Drivepro 200, as recommended by Auto Express and Which? and has been working fine for weeks but with cables all over the place) and my Tomtom satnav, which is mounted bottom right of the windscreen so it doesn't dominate line of sight. I wanted feeds for the two so that the single socket by the gear lever could be used for phone charging. The link to the Golf thread was helpful, but for me there was no way throught the dash innards to the drivers side, so I just used a longer cable and tucked it under the side of the transmission tunnel (I know, I know), round the back, then up to the driver's footwell for the finishing off.

Getting the glovebox back on just sort of happened -  I thought the resistor bar would be a pig, but after a few seconds it just clicked.

Cable for the camera is already tucked inside the A pillar trim and along the top winsdcreen rail and the Tomtom feed comes up between the dash and the bottom of the A pillar.

Maybe Birdbrainuk has a different fusebox setup than mine, but my handbook shows fuse 37 as "headlight left" not fuse 36. I used fuse 47, rear wiper, to piggyback off. Everything works as it should, just need to tidy up all the spaghetti tomorrow so it doesn't tangle round the pedals. There's a surprising amount of space under the dash, but a lot of very thin wires in there too, so working under there needs plenty of light.

Ditto. 37 is 'Headlight left' on mine.
Seems the piggy back lead (got it with my Nextbase dashcam) has a Pos and neg (pos further from lead to dashcam).
There are 'unused' fuse points in the box. Considering using one of those if I can find a switched one.
That way the dashcam is the only item in that line? Also the Skoda fuse refused to go in the piggyback lead.
Unused fuse points appear to have only one side wired (makes sense).

Has anyone used those please? Any issues?

I also poked my dashcam cable up between the screen and the A pillar trim.  Like you I couldn't find  a way between the  footwells.  My satnav power cable comes up in the same place and  lies hidden in the gully between the windscreen and the dash.
