Sat Nav Update - SDCard Quality?

Now try and guess which one :)

Miss Piggy?

Miss Piggy?

Close, but no cigar

If I didn't shave for a few months and you stuck me on a bad ride at alton towers I'd look a bit like Grover I reckon :-)

By the way Wiggo apology accepted. You might think I'm really spitting feathers, I'm not at all but all I would say is if you call people's intelligence into question it's not normally the way to spark friendly chit - chat is it? Water under the bridge and forgotten.....back on topic.....

Again, for whatever it's worth, I was not calling your intelligence into question.  You just seem to have taken it that way and completely overreacted.  I called you on your assertion that an SD card and an SSD were comparable in terms of reliability.  OK, I may have gone about that in a slightly misguided manner...

And if you want to get back on topic, more than happy to.  There's no way you can say an SD card is as reliable as an SSD.  It's just not true (for bog standard consumer products, anyway).  SD cards, generally, are rated at approx. 1m hours MTBF, whereas SSDs are usually 2m hours or more.  That's twice as reliable in my books.  I don't disagree that they are essentially the same sort of technology implemented in different ways, but then so is the internal combustion engine, and some are a lot more reliable than others!

Agreed 100%....sorry may be it's just me but I don't take too kindly to be being called a muppet; same as being called stupid in my book that's all. Just struck a bit of a nerve :-)

So, back on topic, which one am I? :)

One of either Statler or Waldorf?  Or maybe the love child of Kermit and Gonzo?

Jeez - wish I'd never asked!

Also who is to actually say (unless someone has opened one up to take a look) that one of these units doesn't have a fast SD card installed? Wouldn't be the first time VAG have marketed a product incorrectly.

This is a standard hard drive from a Columbus/RNS510.

And the main board slot it connects to (underneath the gps/radio board).

I've not had to open an SSD unit yet, but they use the same mainboard, so will certainly be an SSD drive rather than an SD card.

But the MIB Columbus is a completely different unit ........

Y'know, I never even looked at the forum header. Didn't realise which section I was in... :D

Started to update the SD card on mac and I am stuck as the car will now not read the card when it is put back in the slot... Starting to get frustrated!

It'll be all the hidden files OSX uses to keep track of stuff. You'll have to delete them from the card before it'll take properly.

A Mort said, the Mac creates loads of extra hidden files and folders. This has been discussed many times on here.

Skoda should make it clear in their instructions to only do this on a Windows OS, as the Columbus won't update either if a Mac is used (unless you clean the card up of all the extra stuff the Mac OS puts on there)

May be a daft question but is there an easy way to clear the card of the OS rubbish? And which format should it be?

Yep, use a PC!

Format of the card should be FAT32

There are Mac utilities that will clean up the card - someone posted in the Map Update thread some time ago which one to use

For everyone who's still not able to update their COLUMBUS system and is looking for help: maybe this comment will help 🙂
