Sat Nav Update - SDCard Quality?

Featured Replies

Is it just me, or does the SDCard holding the software for the Sat Nav in the Ahmundsen particularly poor?

I go to perform a backup of the data on the data to a temp folder before the update - Failed twice, data showing on the card as corrupted after third attempt.

Now I'm trying to delete the data on the card (so I can copy over the new software), and its showing as taking 8hrs!  :dull:

By the time Amundsen owners have paid for many replacement SD cards over the lifetime of the vehicle, you might as well have splashed out on the Columbus to start with...  :D

Who said the Columbus wasn't worth the extra!?

The problem may not be the card quality per se but due to the head unit bricking it - possibly when performing a read/write to the copy protected area on the card which is invisible to the user. I believe this was the cause of one of my cards becoming unusable.

Which version of Windows are you using?

How were you notified/discovered that the backup failed? What was the target drive/folder for the backup?

I recommend that you do not delete files from the card. Do a Quick Format instead. That should complete very quickly if the card is ok.

I may have nailed the issue.... the default Windows 8 driver for SD-Cards was causing an issue with formats etc.

I'll update as I discover more.

Don't format using the native Windows formatter, download one of the formatters designed for SD cards

All sorted - Windows 8 had a bad driver as default for the SD Card slot (Dell E-Series) - Installed the Dell Windows 7 driver and format went perfectly.

Tried that (before I swapped drivers) Just said "Card not supported"

can these factory/dealer-provided SD cards for Amundsen be duplicated and the copy used instead?

if so, at least there will always be a cheap backup when the original one breaks down, unlike the Columbus HDD which I doubt will last for many years after the warranty expires

btw, any reliabilty stories wrt the Columbus HDD from Superb? I wonder how much Skoda charges for a replacement

There is no way to copy the original card, the card has a small non user accessible chip that contains a security key that can only be read and written to by the headunit, the data is encrypted and without the encryption key its useless.

You can copy the data from card to card, but the headunit will expect to find the data on the secure chip in addition to the main data, which on any card other than the original will be missing.

SD stands for Secure Digital, and is used in the Amundsen to stop cards being copied to generic cards and sold on.

No, you can't use a duplicated card.

And the Columbus uses an SSD, not a HDD, so will be a lot less at risk due to vibrations / bumpy roads etc.

In fairness if the SSD in the Columbus fails (which I would suggest differs little from an SD card in terms or reliability as they are v similar technologies) you'd be looking at a replacement brains, not just an SD card.

I actually would not be surprised if you opened up a Columbus brain that it had a 128Gb SD card slotted in somewhere and not an SSD drive as marketed.

SSD is a lot more reliable than SD.

Then I would suggest you're a muppet who doesn't know what they're talking about.

Of all the Columbus/RNS510 units I've had to repair, I've never yet had a faulty hard drive. Mainboard failure seems to be the most common, usually down to muppets trying to upgrade firmware with little idea of what they're doing.

Then I would suggest you're a muppet who doesn't know what they're talking about.

Honestly it's people like you that give this forum a bad name.

Seeing any you've chosen to insult a strangers intelligence with little to back it up, I'm an IT professional and have been for a good number of years. If you are also good for you but then I didn't call you a muppet completely unprompted did I?

SSD is effectively flash memory like SD it's just implemented a little differently so that it's quicker and in certain respects more robust. I conceed they are more reliable but then some of the write ageing techniques used on SSD I believe are now incorporated in SD cards so the margin between and SSD and v good card is not vastly different like it was in the early days. Also I can't comment on how good the SD card supplied by skoda are but they probably aren't the best.

I didn't in any way suggest SSD was inferior, mearly stated fact that an SSD failure could occur and it's probably more of an inconvenience if it did than if an SD card fails.

Also who is to actually say (unless someone has opened one up to take a look) that one of these units doesn't have a fast SD card installed? Wouldn't be the first time VAG have marketed a product incorrectly.

Can I suggest you think twice before posting such an arrogant and self fulfilling response to me in future, definitely just trying to spark a bad tone in my opinion and it's about the most pointless response to a post I've encountered on here.

....also I'll state that my SD has worked perfectly with no issues in the 9 months I've had my car.....OK it'll probably break tomorrow now but at least I can just replace the card; probably under warranty.

I didn't realise this forum had a bad name... I actually think Briskoda is a really good name.  Seriously though, I think you need to calm down a little bit.  If that's the way you react when someone disagrees with you, then $deity help us all.

I have no idea if SD cards are covered under the warranty - but I know other manufacturers who class them as consumables in the same way they do the tyres.

The SSD in the Columbus, on the other hand, would definitely be covered under warranty.

Perhaps stop calling people you don't know the first thing about muppet and you might get a different reception; are you a muppet?

You know what WiggosSideburns, I'm sorry as I'm now beginning to stoop to your level....I have no problem with you disagreeing with my opinion, I do have a problem with you outright insulting me.

I don't want any cross words now but if you can't see that you've been offensive then I think the problem sits with you my friend. Good manners particularly to people you don't know cost nothing; if the shoe was on the other foot I'd bet you would also be offended and would have replied accordingly.

Perhaps 'muppet' isn't the insult you think it is... and yes, I've been a muppet many times in my life.  We're all muppets now and again.  Round here at least, all it means is 'foolish' or 'mistaken', nothing more.

For what it's worth, and I suspect not a lot, I apologise if you were insulted.  But do try not to mount your high horse quite so readily when people disagree with you.

Whatever mate, I just can't say I make a habit of calling people I hardly know a muppet when I experience a difference of opinion with them. I don't think it's weird or the equivalent of getting on my soap box by saying I've been offended by it, calling someone a muppet is offensive.

I look like a muppet if that helps smooth things over.

Now try and guess which one :)

By the way Wiggo apology accepted. You might think I'm really spitting feathers, I'm not at all but all I would say is if you call people's intelligence into question it's not normally the way to spark friendly chit - chat is it? Water under the bridge and forgotten.....back on topic.....
