Canton Sound System Settings

Featured Replies

Hello people!

I just get my new 2015 L&K Octavia last week. In this car I have Amundsen Canton Sound System.

I am a little disappointed, it's not so good sound at I expectet. I am trying to play a little with the equalizer, but still think I could get more out of the Canton.

What is your settings on the Canton settings/equalizer?

I think most about the Bass, middle, treble and the subwoofer. What's the best? :)

Thanks a lot!

I just play about with mine, varying settings from time to time.

As others will surely say, the Canton system sounds better the longer you have it.

It depends how you like your music to sound. I prefer slightly bass heavy sound so my Canton is turned up fully, the surround option is turned off or minimum. The bass is turned to just over midway, the mids are a couple of notches up and treble is halfway. For me it's perfect but to someone else's ears it may be terrible.

Just play around until you're happy.

Sub on full, equaliser pretty flat, just a hint of bass boost, Canton surround turned to about 50%. Sound focus set to Off.

You can tell the difference between a quality mp3 rip and a poor one - the poor ones will have poor separation and not much bass going through the sub.

The canton system will highlight any weaknesses in the input signal, so use high quality rips. 128K MP3s will sound awful, instead go for 320K if you can. Don't convert from low bitrate to high as you'll gain nothing, re-rip the audio CD from scratch. If downloaded from iTunes or elsewhere then you'll most likely be stuck.

Cheaper audio systems tend mask the poor quality audio by being poor quality in the first place.

Thanks. I just tried the most now on the DAB. Is the DAB music maybe in poor quality?

DAB in the UK at least is not considered good quality, many argue that what we have is worse than FM. Try a good quality shop purchased CD and see what that sounds like.

Do not have the Canton, but it is generally accepted by audiophiles that all types of speakers do take a while to 'bed' in and sound their best. Keep using the system and vary the settings for another month or so and you should find that the overall sound improves.

The Canton definitely improves over a month or so's use.
Will check my settings later, but I know I have the sub up full.

Driving home from work yesterday without the missus for a change, put some Joe Satriani on (CD ripped to FLAC lossless) and cranked the volume up... sounded REALLY sweet! Not quite as good as my £2,000 system in my old car but close enough that I'm not sure if I will bother changing it.

Only thing I am tempted to do is add some sound dampening to the doors, Skinz or Dynamat, they vibrate like hell with bassy tracks and I think it would really tighten up the bass and overall sound by dampening the doors and door cards.

Also the sub isn't anything fantastic but it's reasonably capable, in an ideal world I'd use up some of that cavern of a boot to fit a 10" or 12" sub so it can go much lower, but would probably be a PITA trying to get something that blended nicely with the Canton system and was controlled properly.

Settings wise I can't remember what mine are set to, I think at some point when I have nothing better to do I will spend some time tweaking it with some key tracks and maybe my laptop and a mic to check frequency curves... but right now I'm feeling too lazy to do that!

Then I try that.

I agree with Shermo and his scientific approach.

I'm a bit picky with HiFi and I call a "sub" a thing which have to play 20Hz-50Hz (so I guess we're not even nrea here), anyway the system seems playing well enough even if with a couple of hours of music, only (so there should be room of improvement).

I agree the door dampening might be improved and - to my surprise - I noticed that volume at max setting wasn't outrageously loud, perhaps I'm getting deaf? :notme:

My settings are actually stuck to "0" and no whatsoever effect.

I took up the suggestion from another thread of opening the ski hatch in the back seat. It's allowed me to turn the sub down and it sounds more natural to me now.

It does improve with time and use as others have said too. The main thing I've noticed against my previous cars though, is the clarity of the sound. I keep hearing things in tracks that I haven't spotted before!

I think the tweeters are particularly good for their price, combined with good quality rips of your music you will hear things in the higher frequencies that will have been "missing" with systems that had poor tweeters or single woofer cones. I think for the price the Canton system is pretty darn good, no way I could match it with aftermarket kit for £400.

The only place it is lacking is depth and tightness of bass, the tightness can hopefully be fixed with adding deadening to the doors.

The depth of bass would really need a bigger sub, there are definitely a few tracks where the bass line just disappears where I know there are notes, a few that spring to mind are Renegades of funk by Rage Against the Machine, also there is a track by Counting Crows where the bass line is really low and is almost missing in parts of the song. But to be honest, these are parts of tracks I hadn't heard until I had a really good hifi system that went really low, so others might not even notice something like that.

Good taste!

There appears to be a bit of a hole in the frequency range between the bass and mid if you boost these, so you lose some bass notes.

I thought this too - however, I soon realised that the input volume on the iPhone was low but the car was on max. Suffice to say my hearing has now been restored...

I've just gone for a spin at lunchtime and I do find you need to turn the bass up a bit to defeat the tyre roar on yer bog-standard British road. My sub is up to full, bass is halfway up and the mid a few notches below that. Might try turning the surround down, never fiddled with it before.

Just check on the way home and I have sub up full, canton surround up 1 or 2 from centre, focus set to front and on the equaliser it's on +9,+3,+7

Mine's an estate with the VBF which is normall folded and the retractable cover is open so there's very little obstruction between me and the sub.

I'm still really pleased with the sound now that it's settled in. It's not a huge pounding bass like I used to have from the aftermarket system in my Mk1, but a lovely clear sound with a reasonable amount of depth to it.

I'm guessing us guys with estates enjoy a much less muted bass experience than the people with hatches as there is less between us and the sub.

I remember putting a small sub in the back of my e46 coupe and it was louder from outside the car than inside due to the boot being so sound proofed!

True that also track volume might vary, but I was playing files from the SD card reader.

Where do I charge the Sub?

Where do I charge the Sub?

Assuming you want to 'change' sub settings:

On the infotainment (centre console):

Sound >> Subwoofer (need to scroll down menu - second from bottom from memory) >> + or - (to change from +9 to -9).
