Better bulbs for Mk3 headlights.

Featured Replies

After a long while of thinking about it. I've got round to putting H7 Osram night breakers and H15 Osram cool blue intense in.

I've attached some grabs from my dashcam with full beam on, and took a couple of shots of the headlights on the same piece of road, showing how much better they light up the road, and the next set of signs

I've also taken photos of the bulbs. The sidelight is still very yellow, and there is a very obvious blue tint when the full beam is on.

Next, to decide which LEDs for the tail lights!

Don't recommend it Ed, I tried that first about a year ago, it wasn't the best of conversaions I've ever had and I'll try to remember the way it went   Basically they've 3 types of bulb upgrade, let

  • Only ones I've seen worth a look are http://www.ledperf.co.uk/pack-of-2-bulbs-h15-4000k-diamond-white-p-5311.html

  • 8500k on the colour spectrum is purple. Most factory fit HIDS are 4300k. 4000-5000k is the effective range. any more just robs light.   I have fitted H7 Philips extremes. noticeably better

You can get rid of the yellowing on the sidelights by adjusting their bight Ness but, you need a VCDS to make this alteration, mine run at about 55% which is just right for the MTEC MT-489a 's I have in mine slightly, over the limits at 4,350k but, WTF

I've been looking at trying either the Mtec (http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/mtec-h15-55-15w-super-white-halogen-upgrade-bulbs/) or Ledperf (http://www.ledperf.co.uk/pack-of-2-bulbs-h15-4000k-diamond-white-p-5311.html). I'm looking for a "whiter smile" but don't want to sacrifice visibility, or end up with one of those blue-ish tints (which probably rules out most of the c**p on ebay). Just wondering what people's thoughts are on either of these products. I can't justify the cost of the Osrams.

ledperf say "for off road use" while the mtec's seem to have no warning. And why are bulbs like these illegal anyway - is it down to the brightness or colour?

Unfortunately I guess the candle-bright sidelights will continue to be an issue, unless I can find someone in the N.E. Wales/Chester area with a VCDS to bump up the brightness...

I've been following this thread since I got my SE 1.4 over a year back, the lights are terrible.

Solved the problem by switching to Xenons - they came with a vRS attached.:happy:

I think the best resolution would be to code the fogs to come on with the main beam. From research and reading reviews, watching videos etc LED headlights have a very nice clean light but aren't as good as decent upgraded halogens. That's looking at other people's reviews though, I have no personal experience. On the black pack lights the difference between dipped and main beam was woeful!

Wifes Audi has LED headlights. As much of an improvement over HIDS as HIDS are to Halogen. No idea what the retrofit kits are like though

I've heard bad reviews but not seen OEM or retrofit in the flesh. I think that retrofit might be quite risky due to the heat issue, a good heat sync is all very well and good but I'm not sure if the standard loom/connections would be up to it, also I'm sure the back of the lenses would be different too. Projector or reflector lenses would probably not be as suited as a dedicated lens. Upgrading to HID in a projector just about gives good consistent results but I'm pretty positive a true LED would struggle to throw the light any distance, I could be wrong of course and I have read one or two reviews that support the upgrade. I would certainly look at LED lights on my next car if they are available, for now it's HID.

Can someone help me to understand how to replace my sidelight bulbs - I totally can't find the access hatch I need to open to get to the bulb.

EDIT: Found the manual...

hi all iv replaced all my front bulbs for leds. h7,for dipped beam,h8 for fogs and h15 for main beam and drl.but my question is there a seperate bulb for the sidelights as they are still yellowish. cheers

Your side lights are your DRLs. The H15 is a dual element bulb. Hope this helps.

Go into your settings on the radio unit and you can turn daylight running off, if you have the carista app and a one you can change the daylight running lights to use fog instead, they go off when you turn on your headlights, until you actually turn them on
