Jill Masterson died in the movie due to "skin suffocation".

 

The fact of the matter is it matters not how much of the skin is blocked by paint or anything else…as long as a person can take in oxygen through the mouth or nose, he or she will not suffocate.

 

But it goes to show the power of Bond that almost everyone was taken in by the myth.
