bonnet handle - which side?

Featured Replies

I own SuperB 1.4 TSI, this year model. My bonnet release handle is on the passengers side! What is yours? For me its very strange as I have to take wee walk around the car to open it :) Skodas in Mainland (Europe) have this handle on correct - drivers side.

I don't have my Yeti as its on order but my Tiguan and wife's Peugeot 2008 both have the bonnet release on the passenger side. It must be because they are designed for LHD.

Yes mine is on the passenger side also and has been the same pre FL too.  I agree its a little awkward alright but wouldn't be my biggest worry with the car.  Perhaps one explanation is a safety consideration - if you are broken down at the side of the road and you need to open the bonnet, you are not opening onto traffic (??) but more than likely its as ExTiguanMan says, they just didn't adapt from LHD.

No, its just cost-saving lazyness, like the wrong side handbrake. Its the same on new Octavia. I believe one member had some great fun when they had a flat battery as they couldn't open the passenger door to pull the bonnet release, as it doesn't have a manual keyhole.

My 1.4TSi combi is on the passenger side also. Not a big issue. I just hate it when some manufacturers put them on a button down the side of the drivers seat on the floor or hide a button somewhere around the base of the steering binnacle.

Surely logic would say to go in the drivers side and reach across and pull the interior door handle to release the passenger door or reach over and down and pull the lever?

Deadlocks.

Its nothing new I have had dozens of cars over the years and had the lever on both sides.

Renault, Peugeot and Citroen started the cheap RHD conversions - since VAG have started doing this I'm worried that all the others might follow suit.

I think the reason is that the car is a European build, therefore left hand drive origine and so the bonnet release is on the left side. Look at a UK build car and I think you will find the release on the right side. It's a bit much to expect them to re-engineer something that does not have a safety implication and some people hardly ever use!

I don't mind it being on the "wrong" side. If anything goes wrong, then the passenger can pop the lever and stick their head under the bonnet, whilst I stay dry and warm inside.

It's a pain for me being on the wrong side on my Octy 3. I have a very narrow drive so have to park with the passenger side almost touching the wall so I can get out of the car. This unfortunately means I can't open the door and therefore the bonnet either.

Filling the washer fluid means taking the car out of the drive simply so I can open the door to release the bonnet.

More worrying is if the car ever didn't start I'd be unable to get it out of the drive and therefore unable to check under the bonnet.

Why can't you simply reach for the bonnet release handle from the driver's side? I agree it is not very convenient, but certainly not impossible.

There is no such thing as the wrong side!

Drivers or passenger side, two choices, both right.

It's impossible to please everyone.

Perhaps they should fit two, one on each side?

Because on the Octy 3 you can't pull the bonnet release unless the passenger door is open. It's physically impossible as the door blocks the handle.

Next step could be to offer electric bonnet release!

I thought this was the Superb 2 forum... Didn't see that he had a problem with the handle in the O3.

Yeah, my bad. I read the thread title and first post and responded on my phone before I noticed we were on about the Superb instead of the Octavia. The same issues still stand though, the bonnet release and handbrake really should have been swapped over as part of the RHD conversion.

Open the bl##dy window and reach through !!!!!!
