ACT150 1.4tsi Golf, A3, Leon SC or BMW120 Xdrive?

Featured Replies

Don't discount the 1.6tdi engine, available in a lot of cars across the VAG range, check out the Golf Bkuemotion or Audi A3, Fabia Monte Carlo etc. Also, have a look at the Skoda business range, well specked cars and good lease deals with maintanence and tyre packages.

Lets be serious now,

the 1.6 TDI CR 105 ps minimum as fitted to the Fabia Monte Carlo is just able to pull the Skin off a Rice Pudding.

& even remapped with an extra 30 bhp it is just up to modern standards of power that many find acceptable.

Plenty of good reliable and quality engines out there, even new Euro 6 compliant, there is no need to step back to the future with

VAG soon to be discontinued engines.

Unless you think you'll have problems with snow I'd just stick to the plain 1 series with rwd and use the extra budget to get a bigger engine.

Even SWMBO can handle her 1 series and she's an awful driver. If it's snowing just hang your keys up unless you've got winter rubber.

BMW are now doing 3 cylinders (with 500cc per cylinder) and Front Wheel Drive,

for those that are not Driving Gods or

that need to drive 'The Ultimate Driving Machine', but still want to drive the Badge in all weathers with just All Season Tyres fitted as it leaves the showroom.

That's what BMW would like to think, but the reality is that most prospective purchasers would look at a Golf as well if they were looking at a 1 series. They're similar money, after all.

Interiors like exteriors are a matter of personal taste, but it has to be said that VAG in general do them better than BMW, whereas BMW tend to do better chassis'.

Sat in a traffic jam, or driving around town I know where I'd rather be sat, but on a twisty country road the 1 series would be the more entertaining (tho' even in this area MQB platform cars are getting close).

I agree it's down to personal taste and I see what you are saying about people considering a golf vs a 1-series which is fair enough.

However I personally haven't seen a VW interior which I felt was as good as what is found in an 'equivalent' model BMW. That's just how I feel on it. I'd agree there are plenty of Audis which can upstage their bmw rivals when it comes to interiors but a Golf? Not for me.

Haven't sat in a Golf R yet mind. I suspect that may be quite nice.

Never had an issue with bmw quality.

Same, E30 rust aside. Just wear and tear items I've had to worry about.

Some of which make 230bhp, which is amazing IMO. 50% more capacity than an ecobost, and nearly 100% extra power.

Still, at least if the 1 series is this crap, there will be a big queue of people lining up to buy old mk-i Fabias when they want an upgrade.

Iv driven the 1.5 turbo in the 136bhp form in a Mini Cooper.

Not a bad engine at all. Pulls nicely and soon revs out. Didnt really seem like it was trying even at the redline tbh, still very smooth, refined and doesnt seem to scream as such.

Id expect the 230bhp version to have a bigger turbo. So im not sure itd be quite as responsive and instant.

It is very responsive in the i8, the electric motor is powering the front wheels with another 130 bhp.

As part of my course work I did an in depth study on the X6 ActiveHybrid system and it had two motors in the gearbox doing that but the more impressive part of the whole system is the instant and constant torque throughout the acceleration right up to V-MAX where as it will drop off on a Petrol / Diesel engine

Maybe your mates car was built on a Friday afternoon?! Lol

I recon it was ...............there was a visible & measurable difference in the width of the shut lines either side of the bonnet...............my point being that for a car (BMW M135i) being 14yrs newer & £34K more than my Fabia, there were areas of paint finish in the engine bay & trim areas in the boot & under the dash which were worse than my Fabia.........which is not what I would expect...............also the rear seats in the BMW are worse than in the Fabia.so is the boot size..................

I've sat in an MK7 R at the dealers....................very nice............not much different to the GT spec MK7 that I am getting built next week by the time I ticked some options.

All manufactures have had  "problems"...........certain era Mercs rust like a bugger................just that BMW is now actively going into the "premium Hatch" sector to compete directly will VW & Audi............also Merc is as well.................Thing is they have to build them down to a price & it shows in certain bits.............I doubt a 14yr old BMW 1 series will be as sought after as a 14yr old VW Golf MK7.........................As for the Fabia remark se my answer above...........

  • 2 weeks later...

I know my experience is of Different engines but I recently drove a 116d in Austria and can only compare it to the Seat Leon 1.2 TSi , but interior wise I think the Leon has more room, and in my opinion the BMW seat felt a bit tight compared to the seat in the Leon, while both cars the fit and finish was similar cannot really comment about handling as the BMW was LHD and this was my first time driving a left hooker....

  • 1 year later...

A bit of a thread revival.

?

Who bought or leased a VW / Seat 1.4 TSI ACT

or an Audi 1.4 TFSI COD,  and how has the real world fuel consumption been?

Can't comment on the fuel economy of the ACT but can comment on the build quality comments on the BMW.

I've had Passat's for the last 6 years and Fabia's for the last 10.

And our 1 Series F20 is just coming up to 3 years old and 30k miles.

The BMW is easily a match build wise for the VW and easily exceeds the Fabia. As it should though for a £25k small hatchback.

Rear seat space is tight, boot space isn't great, front space is compromised by the transmission tunnel but they are all compromises due to the longitudinal engine layout and near 50/50 weight distribution. So you get the payback with how they drive.

3 years on it drives and feels as solid as it came out of the showroom with not a single rattle.

The only thing I will say is they need the 8 speed auto, the manuals gear change is notchy and the clutch pedal is offset. I couldn't live with a manual.

Lee

Sorry,

i should have started a new thread maybe.

I was reviving because of the VW issue with Petrol Engine Certification and CO2 / MPG of the 1.4 TSI ACT / 1.4 TFSI COD.

Just wondering how any member has got on with the real world MPG.

It looks like VW might be paying the UK or other EU Governments any lost VED or Business user Taxes

or the low CO2 Certification given on vehicles with these engines.

And if there is enough space in the boot for oil

Nobody has ever cracked that joke before. Well done.

And as fabiamk2SE points out, not even cracked at the expense of the right engine.

I know, it was said in jest, as I've said before I'm a fan of the 1.4 TSI, ffs

Was there an outcome to this thread? I've had a brief go in a 320D X drive and thought it drove pretty well :), so I would guess the 120D version would drive in a similar way. It's a great engine, powerful, economical and reasonably refined. Similar to most decent diesels I would say (VAG included). The interior is very generic BMW and is of similar quality to the Golf, perhaps a tad better, although I think the Golf and it's siblings shad the BMW for interior space a little. I previously owned the 123D BMW (RWD) which was a genuinely fun car to drive and found it to be very reliable too :D It's a shame the auto box isn't available as it works a treat in the BMW, especially now that it's linked to the Sat Nav (clever) and in a BMW seems to generally get the nod as the best instillation of the ZF gearbox by a manufacturer. I really liked my old SEAT Toledo, except the pink-ish interior instrument lighting drove me nuts! (getting old doesn't agree with pink instrumentation :D )

Ive got a Seat Leon Fr 1.4tsi ACT drove swindon to edinburgh the other week managed 48ish mpg in the cruise.

My daily commute to work Swindon to Amesbury mostly hilly A roads manage around 41mpg

I've also got a Leon FR with this engine, but the estate version. It currently has nearly 2000 miles on the clock and I'm seeing 44-45mpg so far just running around. Not had chance to drive on a long journey yet to see what it is really like.

I have found that the gear change indicator has you changing up so early that the car doesn't switch to 2 cylinder mode as often as if you ignore it. I tend to stay a gear lower so the car switches to 2 cylinder mode more often.

Glynn, is your gear indicator the same?

I was/am the OP.

Didn't get round to buying a new car apart from a 52 plate 99000m Forester. Still have my V50 estate which is the one I was thinking of changing. Drove an A3 felt immediately at home but it was the 150 bhp tdi, tried the golf with the same engine (GT) but didn't really like it and also a 120 xdrive manual. Which I did like and was pleasantly surprised by the dealer experience (Lloyd BMW Carlisle).

BUT

There's always a but.

Also like the Volvo V40 D4. Understated and can fairly shift.

Not sure when I will change my V50 had since new in 2009 and now 121000m. It goes fine and is worth around £3k so worth far more to me than any value left in it. I may just keep it another 3 years.

As you can see I don't like to rush such decisions.

Still would be interested to hear experiences of the ACT/COD engines and wonder why VAG don't do say the 1.8 or 2.0l petrol with the same technology. That would surely be a winner.

I'm on my second Polo BGT with the 150hp ACT engine and average around mid to high 40's depending on how much town driving I'm doing. I have seen high 60's on a very pedestrian drive on the motorway, but generally manage low to mid 50's on a long run at normal speeds.

Is that 109g Co2 / km and £20 a year or 115g / £30 VED?

Clearly something was far wrong at the EU testing with fuel economy as poor as that and the low Emissions figure.

It will be interesting just how much VW have to pay the UK's HMRC for loss of Tax income on each of

these ACT / COD vehicles registered in the UK.

They are getting it in on Tax / Duty on Fuel purchased though.

Maybe that is how it should have stayed in the UK,  Tax on Fuel Bought not false Low Emission Figures achieved

Inside on rolling roads.

My eco indicator seems to come on when it feels like it lol only really on dead level roads or downhill and like you said only if your in a gear lower than you should be for economic driving.

Ski- my fr is the £20/yr Road tax
