The chariot is due its 30,000 miles service 1.6tdi and have booked it in to main dealers but it's 50miles one way, so I'm thinking how hard can it be ? I've been quoted £180 service and brake fluid change is an extra £50 + vat I should imagine, what does the 30,000 service intail bits n bobs , is it oil ,filter and pollen filter /air anything else ? , I can get the oil quantum at trade price and all the parts direct through my son who's at a garage , set of ramps as I've no pit I have service car before but as this is fairly new 61 plate I don't want to break it , will it need connecting to vagcom for brake fluid change or is there another way also the car will be out of warranty by end of October so I'm not sure what to do , it's done 11,000 since its last srvice should I worry

It won't need connecting to anything. My dad has the 1.6tdi Octavia and he either services it himself or gets the local independant to do the big stuff with no issues.

It will need connecting to fully bleed the ABS system otherwise it's a piece of cake to do most maintenance tasks to these!

Only if you drained the whole system. If you just bleed the brakes you don't need VCDS. But it would be a good idea to do a fault scan during the service.

Is this the Golf.  The one that had trouble with a leak in the past?

Is it not getting an extended warranty on it?

So no need for VAT Registered Garage Servicing?

Is it not worth getting it done where your son works, but if not, then surely with him being a mechanic, its pretty straightforward.

Was the cars last Service not a Major / Inspection Service and the Pollen Filter changed then.

This is a Minor Service.

Have a look at the Air Filter and see how it is.

Yeah george it's the golf , the oil leak is fixed and has 2 year warranty on that specific problem and no extended warranty on the engine though, as for servicing somewhere else ( sons) no I want to do it myself as it will be out of warranty and I'd save a fortune by doing it myself , car was serviced at 20k at main Dealers my son has just done his new Monty but he works there so wouldn't be fair asking him to do mine there, so a set of ramps and should be fine it's the brake fluid was my issue really as it needs a full clean and fill as its 3 years then 2 thereafter , he said he'd be happy to help as we always end up doing it together anyway , so it's just engine oil ( I'm going for mobil1 5x30 esp oil ) sump plug and bosch oil filter and that's it I think , I will have to take the car to dealers for brake fluid change

Using VAG parts or just ECP ones?

Brake fluid is every 2 years so should have have been done by dealer at last years service.

3 year until the first change then 2 years there after

That 'Skoda' interval is it? The same company that say air filter and fuel filter every 4 years  :D

I thought 2 years is pushing it TBH,years ago brake fluid was an annual thing to do but I guess progress and such, things can last longer these days.

Yeah I was quoting Skoda but I'd say every 2 years and as a matter of routine I do air and fuel filters every year!

3years from new then every 2 years thereafter vw , it will have genuine parts so quotum oil and bosch filter

Skoda recommend the first brake fluid change at 3 years to reduce fleet costs. After that its every two years to milk us private buyers.

The items covered on Skoda's minor (fixed) and major (variable) services are listed here...

At 30K in addition to the brake fluid all you need is oil and oil filter, however for the sake of an extra £30 in parts I'd also change the air, fuel and pollen filters.

Exactly! Like in a typical routine service I do the spark plugs too as they're so cheap

Fuel filter also ? I've only used vpower so should be pretty clean

I would but that's just me! Some manufacturers have a ten year one which IMO is ridiculous, it's not too expensive so I would!

I did the fuel filter after 40k on my car and it looked fine. Mind you the filter is less than a tenner.

I do oil, air and pollen filters every 10k. Last service cost about £50 including the filters above and 5L of 507.00 oil.

But with the new fuel filter doesn't it need to be purged using vcds

Petrol? Diesel? No don't tend to! On a diesel just turn the ignition on and off about 5-10 times allowing the fuel to pump! On a petrol you can do similar or just keep turning it over

Wouldn't be too worried about using 'genuine' parts, get yourself on ECP, price it all up with the current discount code/offer and it'll no doubt be a good deal cheaper. Probably someone will come on and say get it from TPS cheap as chips but unfortunately not all TPS outlets will deal with joe public.

I know mine is a 2.0TDi but the last 2 'service' kits I've bought from ECP for mine (2013,2014) have come to less than £80 each time and that's 5L of Mobil1 ESP 5w30,Hengst oil/fuel and charcoal cabin filters and took 'pot luck' on their 'premium' air filter, which both times has turned out to be a Bosch item and been a couple of quid cheaper than if I had actually chose the Bosch.

I've got a service job tomorrow - total cost in parts including a top up bottle for the customer and a replacement ball joint and some new wipers is £65

I changed the brake fluid on my octavia using a ezi-bleed kit & was easy to do,no special tools required. Dealers charge £50 i think for a fluid change,i paid £15 for the easy bleed & £5 for 2 litres of brake fluid so depends how often you intend to use it,ive used mine 3 times now.

Fuel filter also ? I've only used vpower so should be pretty clean

I only use v-power or BP ultimate yet still change the fuel filter every ten thousand miles.

It is not a challenge to do, the two little hose clips are the most difficult part and they are a pliers job so not exactly hard.

Get yourself a Haynes manual and get the service done yourself, much more rewarding in my opinion ;)
