Wanted: Smart Head Unit - But Which One?

Featured Replies

Hope this is the correct forum, if not, please move by all means. ;-)

Recently got a YingTong double-DIN head unit running Android 4.2.2 but after much fiddling I've come to the conclusion that it's draining the battery (over 2A without the screen on!) so I'm sending it back.

So, I'm looking for a smart, all-in-one: radio, reversing camera, GPS, Bluetooth with an 8" screen and the usual trimmings.

Has anyone had any experience of these? There's a lot to choose from on Fleabay but with many coming from China with poor instructions (and missing parts in this one) I'm afraid to getting bitten again.

I'm told that Android is preferred over Windows CE so that's obviously a consideration but I'd love to hear from anyone who has successfully fitted one of these and got all the bells-whistles working. I was particularly excited to get Torque (Android) working but gutted to discover that with this unit it had a habit of losing connection to Bluetooth when the ignition was turned off... not to mention, despite being connected to CANBUS, the display remained on even when the ignition was off and the key removed.

Car is an otherwise stock Octavia MkII VRS.

Thanks folks,

Yours, Confused from Middlesbrough.com

EDIT: Looking to spend around £250 or thereabouts.

Take a look at the Eonon units, I had one in my S-Max with nav, Bluetooth, DVD etc and it was pretty decent. Failing that take a look for a second hand Columbus OEM unit or one of the kenwoods..that way you will still get the integration of the car!

Can#'t imagine the Win CE stuff ever being updated. Android would make the most sense.

Thanks guys, we've had a hell of time trying to find something suitable.

Agreed that the WinCE stuff is a complete dead end; we've had another dig (not getting notifications from here) and still come up with that conclusion.

Thanks guys. Apparently the real "Skoda" ones are over £1000! Eeek!
