Winter Protection

Featured Replies

As autumn has now set in. I'm starting to think about getting the car ready for the winter months. What products / methods are best?

The key (so I'm told!) is to make sure your paint is totally clean so whatever you put on lasts longer. I have done mine this week, snowfoam, farecla detox shampoo, rinse, iron x, rinse and dry, tardis, rinse again, farecla clay mit, rinse and dry. Some form of paint cleaner ( I had some AG high devcleaner, so used that as it has no abrasives in it because Chris did mine in the summer with farecla paint restorer which does but there are loads of others e.g. do do juice lime prime or lime prime lite depending on what you want to do/if you paint has any swirls etc) I've gone for 2 coats of jetseal 109 which is a sealer and you can apply 2 coats 20 minutes apart then followed it with some authentic wax. Hopefully using ph neutral snowfoam and AG shampoo conditioner and topping up with sonax BSD every 2 or 3 washes will see me through to next spring.

wheels were sealed with carbon collective ceramic platinum wheel seal. Easy to apply but wheels must beclean- same sort of rountine as above shampoo, iron x, tardis but you also need to use some IPA to make sure tney too are clean. Windows clean with glass cleaner then IPA then something like gtechnic g5 or rain x should do it.

Great answer Ade

Cant fault that recommendation

A regular detox with shower gell, followed by the shampoo of your choice and either either wet or dry shave depending on your preference. Females and new models are excluded from the shaving stage where appropriate. Then dry off with a towel and build protection up in layers after applying a suitable detailing spray. If weather is cold and or wet a top coat and hat is recommended with winter wellies being used if conditions are particularly bad. Store in a warm dry environment making sure fuel and fluids are kept topped up and add a measure or 2 of single malt powerboost or a suitable equivelent every night before garaging.

Its really simple Wayne

You just bring it 1 mile up the hill to me.... regularly

Cheers guys. Is Jet seal best for winter what about Collinite 845

Sent from my Galaxy S5

Jetseal probably isnt durable enough to last all winter without the need for top-ups. If you dont have a reliable dry & warm area its probably not ideal. Colli 845 over a good prepared base is pretty good. Its not the most durable of the Colli products but is a pretty good choice. Helped by the fact its so easy to reapply if needed. Does depend on where you keep your car, how severe the weather is, how much road salt and crap we get on the roads this winter etc etc.

My choice would be something like Colli 476 or 915 or better still the proven winner i FK1000p - all of those will last a winter if you prep well and get 2 layers on in good dry conditions so it cures well from the start. I just put 2 layers of Farecla G3 paste wax on for a change and hope that might get close to a winter.

The more you wash a car the quicker you will wear the wax/sealant off, and using strong wash products, foams etc will also accelerate the removal of an LSP. Using a top up product regularly like Aqua Wax, OCW or BSD will help keep things protected until spring.

Cheers for that. I don't have a dry place to wash the car weekly over the winter months. Think I will give FK1000P ago as I need something I can leave on and give a wash as and when the weather allows

I an't disagree with those recommendations at all....

FK1000P and Collinite 476 have been my winter waxes for sometime now!

FK1000p is a great sealant for wheels as well , copes better with higher temps than conventional waxes

Everyone is mentioning Waxes...(with the exception of Finiskkare which is a hybrid similar to Fusso Dark Coat)

However, just throwing this into the debate

Why not apply a pure sealant? They are generally regarded as being more durable and will last longer than Winter

Some research is required..........

but many can be applied very simply and safely

Optimum Optiseal, for example, just needs wiping on the paintwork...no buffing required

Ceramic sealants are a little tricky, but are applied basically in the same way....with 2 years durability , in some cases

FK1000p all the way, which is a pure sealant and is easy to apply & can be layered.

ChrisrS you say its a hybrid, what makes you think that?

I was going to say - it is under Sealants on CYC.... but pedantics aside; for performance, value for money, ease of use....

Hard to go wrong with FK1000P..... IMO

I thought it was a Hybrid Steve.

Thank you for clarification...I must get some one day

I prefer liquid sealants/spray sealants not Sealants that look like waxes

Well - it looks like the OP has a few options to go at - depends on budget and preference

Tidied a few unnecessary posts up

Come on guys, lets keep it friendly and stay on topic

Cheers

Thanks Damo - appreciated.

I would say just get a coating. Everyone on here knows my opinions on the one I use religiously now. All my waxes and sealants are gathering dust on the shelf. Make of that what you will!
