Upgrading the radio on an 05 octavia?

Featured Replies

Hi all, new Briskoda user and a new (used) skoda owner. I've had a bit of a search but struggling to find an answer.

At the moment I have the stereo with the LCD screen and it's looking pretty old fashioned, I was wondering what stereos are compatible for an upgrade.

I'd quite like to still be able to use the cd multi-changer in the boot.

It would be good if the reverse parking display still worked.

It would be good (but not critical) if it had satnav.

Official skoda stereo or an aftermarket stereo would be fine, second hand or eBay would be an option and the car is only worth a couple of grand so don't want to spend loads. I was thinking between £80-£200.

I'm not sure if it's even possible but I'm sure other octavia owners have at least tried.

Thanks in advance.

Deacon

Amundsun

Bolero

Columbus

You won't get the latter for twice your budget, even secondhand.

If you go for a bolero or Columbus then you will almost certainly need to upgrade the CAN gateway to avoid the battery draining problem. A new one is about £80.

Sounds like it's not particularly straightforward then.

£400 will get an excellent Skoda Columbus with latest maps, and fitting included. There's one for sale on another forum.  :nerd:

As I said, twice the OP's budget.

You said he wouldn't get one even for twice his budget...

Still need a new CAN gateway on top of that.

I've done it for £200 - I have a Bolero. It can be done, just need some shrewd sourcing of the radio.

(That included the CAN, and I coded it myself)

But not a Columbus, eh?  Which is what I actually said....

But then people would have to read the posts they are nitpicking.

EDIT: I was replying directly to OP./

As Adamal says, canbus isn't an issue if you know what you're doing. And a Columbus at £400, fitted, coded, and fully working is (admittedly) right on the "twice your budget", but I feel that a Columbus on supply only would be a good bit less that that £400. Then again, what would people rather do? Buy a really old one for £300 and hope it works as it should do (let's face it, that doesn't happen every time according to the sales threads on here), or pay £400 and have a much newer one fitted, coded, and working to your satisfaction before forking out any money?

But if it makes everyone happy, then I agree you can't buy a Columbus for £400.

just paid 300 for a columbus fitted it my self didnt have to code it in either and i have a bolero will be on ebay tomoz lol

You will probably have an error code now on the can bus , I had that when I replaced the stream for the nexus. Fitted it myself and it all worked but on a scan I had "can bus - module incorrectly coded" and "navigation not registered". Quick thread on here and coded it with VCDS now tickety boo. If only I could code my DPF !!
