Poor dipped beam

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've had my first couple of drives on unlit roads at night in my Mii recently and I've found the headlights pretty poor!

Full beam is fine but on dipped beam the range of the headlights is pretty short. The adjuster on the dashboard is set correctly as far as I know ( to the lowest position marked with a dash '-').

Has anybody else had this problem? Is there any way to adjust the headlight aim myself?

Lots including myself have had this problem.

They all suffer.

I fitted Osram Nightbreakers which improved the brightness but not the length of beam. My dealer checked them and found was set too low from the factory. They are now set on the max legal height and are so much better [emoji106][emoji16]

I guess its an adjustment issue rather than the lights themselves as I think mine are fine.

Ah thanks! Guess I'll be heading back to the dealer.

I'm reluctant to go down the route of upgraded bulbs as in the past I've not found them to make much difference. As you say, it's the 'cut off' of the headlights beam that's the problem.

Decent bulbs will make a noticeable improvement. Try osram nightbreakers or philips extreme vision.

Obviously have them set correctly too. No amount of added output will help if its only set to go 6 foot infront of the car haha.

Stormchaser can you measure the distance of your beams so people can compare their setup?

My first Citigo had the same problem but my new Black Edition is a lot better, in fact very good. I am wondering if the headlight reflectors have been changed because I was expecting to change the bulbs as I did before but there is no need on this occasion.

I would say they go out as far as at least 4 car lengths ahead as opposed to 1 before. The dealer adjusted them to the max legal height. I do get flashed though occasionally on the way home at night on an unlit road. My beams are a brilliant white colour though. They're on par with my previous Octavia now [emoji106][emoji16]

My headlights where set very low on delivery. Updated bulbs made a difference to the amount of light, but not the poor reach. Re set them near the top limit for MOT and all is well. Also worth noting that the car did not come with long life bulbs, so light output from the standard bulbs is respectable.

Haha that's the thing, it looks like the beam is only reaching a car length or two in front of the car.

I've driven on an unlit dual carriageway a couple of times now and I've felt I had to cut my speed significantly in order to feel safe.

Good to hear from others with the same issue. I read somewhere that there's an adjustment screw to the rear of each light unit. Will have to investigate and then possibly look at upgrading the bulbs.

Yeah just turn em up mate.

Not sure about the citigo, but on the fabia theres a hex head on each headlight unit. Turning those adjusts the beam height on the dipped light.

Stormchaser,

Any chance you could park up about 4 metres from a wall or garage door on the flat, measure the exact distance from the front of the car to the wall, then with dips on , measure from the ground to the top of the flat part of the dip beam. If you could post all the measurements on here anybody who wants to can adjust their car to suit. An adjustment would need to be made for models without the lowered suspension.

My missus complained about the lights on hers. Went out to see what the problem was, seems she'd driven down the M61 with the turned only one click so they were on dim dip. Sometimes I despair

I thought the one click was only sidelights (dim running lights) and not dim dipped head lights?

You're probably right :)

Although our headlights are quite good I've ordered some Night Breakers to see what improvement they give?

Had ours checked at dealers, aim is ok. Time for some big bulbs before winter then.

Are osram night breakers the best option then?

I have the Osram Night breakers on my Octy, difference from the standard H4 on the mk1 Octy is massive.

they also sem to have better longevity than the more expensive Philips Xtremes -

Iv had mine in for near 2 yrs, and i always run with dipped beam on day and night...

havnt changed the missus citigo yet, as an ex demo/ courtesy car down the dealers, the beams have been set right on hers, not sure what bulbs are in,

though they seem to be very good output. there will be NB's going in when one blows though. and Error free LED DRLs...

I've fitted the Osram Night Breaker Unlimiteds & the light output is significantly better

I did but lasted less than a year. Now on Halfords extreme brilliance which are way better than Osrams [emoji106]
