aol/talk talk users regular loss of connection

Featured Replies

I have been with aol for 12 years, and on switchover from modem to router when I got broadband I have used my own Belkin router. however it decided to pack up, and I requested a router from aol, as they had never supplied me with one.

it arrived 3 weeks ago and it constantly loses the internet connection ,i have contacted their help line 4 times, of which each technician? has done different procedures.

1 reset password in capital letters

2 changed some setting from 3400 to 34000

3 did a 24 hour line test by asking me to remove the wall box cover and plug into the test socket, I was assured that there was no fault here.

4  I asked for a replacement router as the only thing I could think of was the one I was sent was faulty, this request was declined by them.

it seems to be a common problem with aol/talk talk, are any subscribers to this internet  provider experiencing the same problems, and what was the solution please.

every thing comes back to normal if  I switch the router  off, then back on again.

my last resort is to change my provider, but I am reluctant to do so, as I will loose my wifes and my e mail address.

thank you kindly

Hi mobil1, Google "community talktalk" for help.  Far more use than their call centres.

ironic but the only TalkTalk product i dont have trouble with is Broadband, the TV is @"%$!&* and their mobile network is not great either.

The TalkTalk 3680 router has an auto timeout after 30 minutes I think.

A setting called "idle time" needs changing to 0 (zero) if you haven't already.  This will maintain it in "always on" mode.

thank you for your reply camelspider, my router is a hg 533, and looking at community talk talk as  advised by yourself, I see that there are a lot complaints about the same problem.

I don't seem to have the setting you mention, if I remember its manual or automatic

I would purchase another router, I cant understand why ISP give out crap routers.... It harms the quality / rep of the company.

If your tech savvy I would recommend a good Cisco router if your not then maybe a D-link / Netgear router.

Talk Talk also have crappy down-specced D-link Routers as well as Huawei - its pot luck as to what you get, and the routers aren't the half of it!  Their own brand (Huawei) Youview TV boxes are utter rubbish too.

Firstly I would run through the test socket for a day and disconnect all other things in other sockets

If the problem persists swap filter, router (borrow one?) one at a time for a day each

If problem persists the fault is outside your home and needs open reach

Aol were very reluctant to send them out to me but when they did, problem solved

Further problems few week later and I changed provider to bt just to nail the ongoing problem as obviously they are happier to send open reach out

thank you dazz, .  I ran it  for 24 hours plugged into the test socket visible when the bt socket face plate was removed, to my knowledge it did not loose connection  .what  is the purpose of the face plate socket being in the middle, yet the socket inside the box is to  the right,

I have also tried 2 different filter boxes

I have once again rang aol, this time  there was no instructions to change settings etc  as I was told on 3 previous calls about the problem, they are now sending a talk talk engineer out on friday its my guess that it  is  the router

I will inform you as to what the outcome is, and thank you to all of you for your assistance

I have yet to come across a reliable ISP-supplied rouer/modem.

BT homehub, businesshub both garbage.

Virgin supplied belkin adsl unit was too.

Virgin superhub (cable) has crap wifi (the older motorola surfboard cable modem was rock solid for years and I never had any issues with the wired side of the superhub).

I'd pick up a D-Link one myself as I've never had an issue with them.

well, the engineer arrived today, a day earlier than booked.

he has fitted a new faceplate which incorporates the filter, unlike the old one which had to have a separate filter plugged in.

also he did 3 adjustments to the settings, one of which was mentioned in an earlier answer by camelspider, being the time out.

time will tell, hopefully it is now fixed.

thank you to all who have assisted me, you certainly are a friendly group of members on this forum.

well 2  weeks later  and the problem still exists, they have billed me £50 for  the engineers visit, saying that because he fitted a new face plate because it was corroded the fault was on my side, but after a telephone call I got this charge removed.

i asked the engineer if he thought it might be a faulty router, he answered very quickly, NO.

im now wondering whether to risk getting another router [netgear dgn 2200] seems to have good reviews on the currys customers coments

Before that I would borrow another router from someone first

Any router will do just to see if the problem persists

Intermittent faults can be a real nightmare to correct

I know,I've been there. :(

I would like to thank all who have offered their possible solutions on this subject.

i will be switching to fibre on the 3rd December, that certainly will rule out the router, also it seems from what information i gather, that ordinary broadband does loose  connections at peak times, were fibre is less likely to.
